Chapter 15: The Narrow Escape

When Blair woke up at her desk, she realized something was off. Nights with little sleep were finally wearing down on her. Blair knew it too, but she felt as if she needed to make it up to her boss. Afterall, Blair had made too many mistakes and wanted to prove to Rena that she could be trusted and relied on. There was no way she could do that if she was slacking off. When Blair looked around to find that she wasn't in her own apartment, but rather inside Rena's Widgets, she was a bit confused.

Her eyes widened when it finally dawned on her. Somehow, she had fallen asleep while she was working. Blair started to panic. Of all the jobs she had in the past year, working for Rena was the best. Yes, there were times her boss was intimidating and harsh, but as long as Blair stayed on top of things and did her job (which was almost always), Rena was very nice.

How far would Rena's kindness extend when the inventor found out that her secretary fell asleep on the job? Blair didn't want to find out.

Seeing how dark it was on the ground floor, Blair realized that wouldn't have happened. Surely enough, her boss would've made last minute rounds to make sure everyone was out, but Blair was still there. When she looked down at her shoulders, she even noticed a small purple blanket wrapped around her shoulders, almost as if someone noticed she had fallen asleep and didn't want her to get too cold. Maybe it was Rena who did it, but Blair couldn't imagine her doing anything but reprimand her for falling asleep. After all the times she's gotten yelled at, she expected that from her boss.

Then again, Blair had her fair share of lectures, scoldings, and warnings. It all started at a young age. Blair remembered it well because the first time she had gotten a huge lecture on anything, it was when her mother entrusted her with the job of protecting the Lunar Wing. It was a huge responsibility, and Blair knew it, even at the age of ten. It just sparked something in her that she would do anything to keep it safe, especially since Lunar Wings aren't something that's found in Unova.

That sense of pride quickly washed away when Blair realized she wasn't the only one. She didn't know anyone who was trusted with such secrets, but she did know that they always ended up doing one of two things: turn to the dark side or were killed once someone found out. That terrified Blair, especially when she overheard her best friend got killed when he wouldn't give up an artifact.

Just like her, it was a Lunar Wing that got her friend killed by the owner of the Underground Bandit.

Blair knew none of the guardians were supposed to tell one another of what they protected or even that they were even a guardian. The only way Blair knew someone was like her was when they had ended up dead. Blair had to be cautious with what she did. If anyone found out that she gave her Lunar Wing to Swanna Girl, they'd kill both of them.

Speaking of which, Blair looked around. It was getting late, and she figured if anything, Swanna Girl should've returned, hopefully with the third Lunar Wing or at least, some sort of lead as to where they could find it.

"Do you think she would've gone back?" a voice whispered.

Blair turned her head just as the front door opened. Her eyes widened as she quickly grabbed her Xtransceiver. She didn't have time to look at who was walking into the building as she ducked under her desk, pulling her knees into her chest to hide. It was after hours. No one should've been inside the building after hours.

"If not, we have to make sure we get her. We need a back-up plan in case this doesn't work," a second voice warned, though his voice sounded a bit staticy for some reason.

Blair's heart stopped. Despite that second voice sounding like it was full of static whenever he talked, she knew that voice. She knew exactly who that voice belonged to. True, she knew not to trust him the moment she saw him on television, but hearing him confirm her thoughts frightened Blair. The young woman tried to breathe slowly as she realized that he was right there.

The Braviary Man imposter was here.

"Whatever you do, you need to make sure you're not followed. If word gets out that someone broke into Rena's Widgets, I'll personally make sure you don't see the light of day, do you copy?" the imposter asked.

"Yeah yeah, I copy," the first voice replied with an annoyed tone. "Just how do I get through this place without being followed?"

"That's your pro—I think I heard someone coming. Get your job done, or else," the imposter warned, before she heard the static disappear.

Suddenly, Blair could breathe. It wasn't much, but it was better than before. From what she was gathering, there was only one intruder in the building, not two. That was one too many for Blair's liking, especially since the one that was in the building was someone she didn't know.

Just what was it that they were planning? She thought to herself.

The moment Blair had that thought, it slowly started to make sense. Swanna Girl never made it back. She was supposed to come here when they were done with their mission. Did anyone come back from that? True, Blair knew of it as she kept an eye on the group to make sure they were using the Lunar Wing for good, but that didn't mean she knew everything.

All Blair knew was that she needed to warn Rena before things got out of hand. She needed to warn her. Her boss would know exactly what to do.

Blair pulled her Xtransciever in front of her face, watching as it shook rapidly side to side. It wasn't the device itself that was shaking. It was her own hands.

If she screwed this up, everyone could die. True, that was the worst case scenario, but Blair could feel her breaths staggering a bit as she thought about it. These were good people, especially Rena. True, she had a temper, but deep down, she was sweet. If she wasn't, Blair wouldn't have gotten hired. Blair made too many mistakes in the past to make her hardly qualified for this job.

It made her wonder why Rena chose her in the first place.

Rena. Blair realized. I needed to warn Rena.

Blair tried to steady the Xtransciever in her hands as she pressed her number. Once entered, the device rang loudly, almost as if announcing to everyone in the room that she was trying to get ahold of someone.

"Shi—oot," Blair nearly cursed as the device fell from her hands.

Everything else got silent. The only thing that echoed through the walls was the loud ringing of the Xtransciever. Blair tried to grab the device and find the button to silence it, but she could hardly find it because her hands were shaking.

"Well what do we have here?" a voice mused.

Blair looked up to see a man three times her size with no hair, wearing a plaid long-sleeved shirt. Her heart stopped as she saw him. Blair recognized who was standing in front of her, just like she had recognized the voice from before. He was the Pokémon poacher, Clyde Damion.

He tilted his head to the side when Blair froze in fear. She wasn't sure what she could've done at that moment. All she could do was pull her legs into her chest. If it had been any other day, she would've thrown Zoe, her Zebstrika, to help out, but she couldn't. Of all the days she had left her Poké Ball at home, it had to be today.

She wasn't even sure why she left Zoe's Poké Ball at home. It was always second nature to her so that she could take her Pokémon out during her lunch break. Something must've come up that she had forgotten her beloved partner at home. Blair just couldn't remember what it was.

Not that it mattered. What mattered was that she felt like at any moment, her life was going to be taken away from her.

"You're certainly not who I'm looking for, and you definitely don't have any Pokémon that can be of value. Guess that only means one thing. Sawk, finish her," the criminal said as he backed up.

Blair watched as a blue bi-pedal Pokémon stepped in front of him. She felt her heart race as she watched his arm glow.

Brick Break, the young woman thought to herself. That move would be the death of me.

She wanted to scream, but her voice was silent. Nothing was happening, even as the Pokémon started to shoot his arm right into her stomach. Only then did Blair squeeze her eyes shut, awaiting the impact.

The impact was worse than Blair would have imagined as she felt excruciating pain bash right into her stomach. There was so much force that Blair was pushed back past her desk, feeling the sharp splinters piercing through her back and into another desk that shattered on top of her. By the time she landed, Blair was no longer curled into a ball, but rather, she was laying on her back, with her arms and legs feeling to weak to move.

When she peeled her eyes opened, she noticed Sawk walking towards her. He wasn't going to be happy until she was dead; Blair was almost certain of that. She held her breath, thinking these would be the last moments of life she had. Of all the ways she could've died, Blair didn't want to die like this.

"Hydreigon, use Dark Pulse!" Rena's voice cut through.

Blair's eyes widened as a dark sphere clashed into the Fighting-type Pokémon. He fell to the ground, receiving serious damage, even though the move shouldn't have been that effective against him.

"Stay away from my building you son of a bitch!" Rena cursed, "I swear to Arceus you're going to pay for every damn thing you break!"

Realizing what was going on, Blair used every last bit of strength inside of her to stand up and run away. Her muscles ached as she pulled herself on her knees, and her head started to feel a bit lightheaded as the room started to spin. That didn't stop Blair from taking a deep breath and standing up, but as she did, she tripped and stumbled into someone's arms.

"Finish them off!" Rena screamed.

Blair froze as she looked up, finding herself in the arms of her boss. She could feel her heart racing as she saw Rena's eyes blazing with fire. Her boss always had a short temper. Blair knew that much, but she had never witnessed so much rage before. Seeing her boss like that scared her.

Rena must've noticed what was going on and looked at her employee. Without saying much, she helped Blair stand back onto her own two feet.

The moment she was standing on her own, Rena returned her attention back to her Pokémon. "Alright Hydreigon, use Crunch!"

"Dodge and use Brick Break!" Clyde Damion yelled.

All eyes were on the Pokémon in front of them. All three heads of the Hydreigon opened their mouths while Sawk tried to dodge by jumping behind the Pokémon and leapt into the air. It seemed for a moment that Sawk was going to hit his opponent up until the moment Hydreigon turned around and chomped onto Sawk's fist.

Despite being the weaker type, Hydreigon had control over the Pokémon. Blair's eyes widened in amazement while Rena smirked. She didn't give her Pokémon a command for him to swing Sawk away, sending him flying towards his Trainer.

In seconds, Sawk crashed into Clyde Damion, causing both the Pokémon and Trainer to fall to the ground. Both of them fainted the moment they made contact.

Blair stood there in bewilderment. She knew her boss wasn't one to mess with, but she never imagined her to be so strong.

"I'll warn the others about this," Rena told Blair. "In the meantime, I need you to go home. Make sure Zoe is by your side at all times. You don't need to get yourself in this mess if you don't need to, so just wait until this whole thing blows over."

Rena rushed towards the elevator, leaving Blair behind. The young woman stood there for a moment, still in shock. When it finally processed in her mind everything that had happened, Blair turned to look at Rena.

"That imposter is behind all of this," Blair warned Rena, "and they're looking for Swanna Girl. I-I want to help."

Blair watched as Rena hesitated for a moment.

Rena took a deep breath before looking back at Blair with a genuine smile. A smile was rare coming from Rena. Blair could almost feel the room growing a bit warmer as it happened, though she doubted someone had turned the heater on at that moment.

"Okay," Rena agreed.

(-o-)

With every step that I took into the cave, the more I started to second guess myself. I drew in a deep breath, trying to ignore the feeling, but it didn't work. Despite being late into the night, flashes of light still illuminated the cave. Everything remained the same as before, making it easier to navigate through the place.

Mienshao was the only Pokémon I kept out of their Poké Ball. She crossed her arms over her chest as she looked around the cave. I could tell I wasn't the only one being paranoid at this, especially since she looked around the cave, afraid as to what might happen.

While she was distracted, I took some time to take a good look at Mienshao. There were some light bruise marks covering parts of her body, but they were hidden so well that I had to look for them. Her left whisker even had a scar wrapped around the part where the yellow met the light gray fur. Whatever happened inside that Poké Ball hurt her physically, more so than Swanna since she was trapped in there longer.

Audino had a Heal Ball. That should delay some of the damage it did, right? After all, Rena did modify the Poké Ball a long time ago to make sure that Audino could heal from his injuries the longer he was in it. It was the first Heal Ball she did that to before they were mass produced. Things should be fine for Audino, but that for all I knew, that device could still hurt him. I had to play things safe. I had to find that Lunar Wing.

I looked around the cave, pointing my flashlight around, hoping I could find something, or at least, find someone who would know where this man was. While I didn't know much of this man's identity, I knew he was old and sick. It made me feel guilty I was even doing this, but with my skill of being an ex-Pokémon Nurse, I might be able to help.

But...I could heal Pokémon, not humans. If it wasn't serious, sure, I might be able to help. There were just some things that were out of my expertise.

Besides, could I even take something away from him? For all I know, this man could be struggling with some nightmares. I knew first hand how hard nightmares were. They're horrible. According to Hilbert, mines were caused by one of Team Oblivion's leaders, Shade, but I still had them. Every once in a while, I'd still wake up in a cold sweat.

A Lunar Wing could solve that, but my Pokémon were more important. Maybe I could talk to this guy and figure things out. After all, I would do whatever it takes to save both my Pokémon and help this guy.

Mienshao stopped once we made it to the part of the cave I had woken up in before. I almost kept walking away when I noticed her turning away from me. She walked towards the large boulder I was at earlier, the same one Swanna, Plusle, and I had hidden behind. Thing was, Mienshao wasn't with us that day. There was no way she would've known that was where we were at.

"Shao Mien Mienshao," she said as she looked back at me and pointed at something.

I slowly walked to where she was standing and knelt beside her, trying to find out what she was talking about. It took me a while to see what she was pointing at until I saw a white feather laying on the ground.

"We were here before you were freed from your Poké Ball," I explained to Mienshao as my eyes closed. "We had the last Lunar Wing we needed to save Audino, but I lost it in this area, or at least, I dropped it before someone came here."

Mienshao placed a hand on my back before she started to tap my back lightly. I turned to look at her, seeing her hand curled up in a fist while she gave me a determined smile. Her hand was covered by the long fur that extended over it, with the purple ends plopping downwards, but I knew this stance well from when she was in a middle of a hard battle.

My Pokémon was telling me that we would get through it, that we wouldn't give up. I smiled at Mienshao as I realized how much I missed her determined personality. That was what got her through all those training sessions with Audino. The two loved to spar with one another, so seeing that her closest friend on the team was in danger probably gave a bit more motivation. Not that Mienshao needed it, but I could tell by looking at her that there was a bit more of a drive behind everything.

"You're right," I said, looking back down at the ground, trying to find some more clues. "We'll get him back. We'll have to. We just need to find that Lunar Wing."

"You mean this?" a voice questioned, causing shivers down my spine.

Mienshao and I shot up to our feet and turned around to see a young man standing behind us. Surely enough, in between his fingertips was a feather that curved to the left. Like the name suggested, it looked like a crescent moon, only it was yellow, melting into a green tip. Fluffs of white sprouted at the end of it.

Just by looking at it, I was almost certain it was the same Lunar Wing that I had found at the Underground Bandit. Besides, it was a Lunar Wing. Unova didn't have any of those, and with good reason being that Cresselia didn't live here. That Pokémon lived in Sinnoh.

The man tucked it away in his pocket. When he did, I looked up at him, getting a better look at who found it. He wasn't old. Those Trainers made it seem like the man who needed it was old and sick. This guy was anything but that. In fact, I don't even think it was the same guy they were talking about as he took off his fake Braviary-looking mask to reveal these blue eyes.

Blue eyes that weren't even close being to the navy blue ones I missed.

"Give that back," I seethed. My hands clenched into fists. "I need it."

The imposter smirked. "I don't think you do," he said as he exchanged the Lunar Wing for a Poké Ball. "But, I'll make you a deal. If you come with me willingly, I'll send that feather to your friends."

I exchanged looks with Mienshao who shook her head. She didn't have to as I had already learned my lesson about working with people I didn't trust. The last one took months of getting out of it. There was no way I was going to make the same mistake, not when I was almost certain this guy wanted me dead.

If I was going to stop Team Miasma, I couldn't die quite yet.

"I need to be the one to get the Lunar Wing back there," I told him. "That way, I can put a stop to Team Miasma once and for all."

The Braviary Man imposter rolled his eyes. "You honestly think you're going to stop them? You've had four years to do that, and you've yet to do it, so let me handle them. Right now, I just need you to come with me willingly."

"Never," I sneered. "I'm not falling for that again."

"Suit it yourself. Gallade, standby for battle!" he yelled as he hurled the Poké Ball out in front of him.

Gallade? That wasn't a Pokémon you saw everyday. At least, not in Unova.

After the light escaped the Poké Ball, revealing a bipedal Pokémon with sharp green arms and thin white legs. It was one of the evolutions of the Ralts line, something I've seen many times before while I traveled through Sinnoh. Gallade was a common Pokémon there, but that wasn't what caught my eye. Instead, something was familiar about him.

Seeing Gallade's red eyes glare at me, I felt everything stop.

"That's Rudi's Pokémon," I gasped out loud, shaking my head in disbelief. Even after I blinked a couple of times, I could hardly believe it, but there was no denying it. "That's not your Pokémon!"

"Oh really?" the Braviary Man Imposter questioned. "Do you think he'll listen to you?"

I looked over at Gallade, but he didn't seem to notice me. Instead, something seemed off. This whole time, I thought Rena or even her parents were taking care of Rudi's other Pokémon, but that clearly wasn't the case. Even though I had last seen him as a Kirlia, there was no denying that he was the Gallade standing in front of me.

While I could recognize him, I could tell that Gallade had felt differently. He glared at me, waiting patiently for a command. Seeing that happen, something was off.

"Mienshao, be prepared," I whispered.

My Pokémon nodded her head, understanding what I was saying. She took a step in front of me standing in her battle stance.

"This shouldn't take long," the imposter announced, "just don't say I didn't warn you or had given you the chance. Use Imprison!"

Kirlia didn't know that move back when Rudi had him. This must've been a new move. Regardless, I had to be careful as a pink aurora wrapped around Mienshao.

"Use Aura Sphere," I shouted.

A sphere of light formed in Mienshao's hands before she threw it towards Gallade. While Gallade could've easily dodged it—which was what I was hoping for to send another attack when he was in mid-air—the Blade Pokémon just stood there, waiting for the attack to come. Even the imposter didn't say a word as he smirked, crossing his arms over his chest.

None of it made any sense until Mienshao's move started to shrink, disappearing before it even made contact.

My mouth gaped open in shock.

"Thought you knew this Pokémon. Oh well. Makes it that much easier on me. Gallade, use Psychic!" he yelled.

Gallade's eyes glowed just before his green arms extended out in front of him. Another wave of pink started to wrap around Mienshao's body, preventing her from moving. My eyes widened, as I tried to remember all of her moves, trying to think of something to help her out in this situation.

There was just a small problem. Mienshao was already exhausted from being trapped inside her Poké Ball for a while. The last thing she needed was to battle, but I didn't have another option. Swanna and Braviary were both exhausted from flying and battling at the Underground Bandit. I had yet to give them proper treatment to heal them. Plusle couldn't battle, not when she didn't know any moves.

Here, I thought Mienshao could handle it being that she was always a fighter, but I was wrong. I knew it the moment I saw Gallade fling his arms to the right, forcing Mienshao to crash into the wall.

I was about to scream, but she looked up. Her eyes glared towards Gallade, signalling she wasn't going to give up, even if Gallade was a friend of ours. He just couldn't remember or recognize us for some reason. Whatever was going on, I wasn't going to give up.

"Try using Swift!" I commanded, throwing my arm towards Gallade.

The imposter rolled his eyes. "Delaying this battle isn't going to help you. Stop it with Psychic and then end it with Psybeam."

Stars shot out of Mienshao's hands as they sped as fast as they could towards Gallade. Unfortunately, our efforts weren't enough as Gallade shot his hands out at the last minute, causing the stars to fall to the ground just before they could hit him. Once the stars had stopped, Gallade flung a wave of purple and pink beams towards Mienshao.

"Dodge it!" I screamed as I looked at Mienshao.

But Mienshao wasn't fast enough. I knew there was no way she was going to dodge that attack as she struggled to stand on her own two feet.

A memory popped up in the back of my mind. One that I had nearly forgotten about. Back when I first became Swanna Girl, I trained alongside Rudi. I remember seeing Swanna battling her hardest, but she wasn't going to dodge an attack Braviary had made. She had just been hit by Attract, and was infatuated by Rudi's Braviary.

While I returned her inside her Poké Ball, I remembered Rudi's words. It was those words that reminded me what not to do in a Pokémon Battle. "Seriously, you gave up that quickly?...What's going to happen if Team Miasma has her down to the ground? Stand your ground. Fight to the end," he lectured.

Mienshao wasn't going to do that. Hearing his voice replaying in the back of my mind, I felt like a failure. There was nothing I could do if Mienshao was hit. I couldn't stand to see Mienshao injure herself further, so I did something I don't think the imposter was expecting me to do. My feet started to take off before I leapt in front of Mienshao, taking the hit myself.

Psybeam was said to be a weaker Psychic attack. Maybe that was why I allowed myself to take the attack instead. I thought it wouldn't hurt that much, but I was wrong. Those beams stabbed me right in the stomach, flinging me past Mienshao and into the wall. Wherever there was a tear in the black Swanna Suit I wore, I could feel it as I slid down the wall, feeling the cool rocks piercing their way inside every open wound on my back. That was what made the attack so painful. I didn't even realize I had injuries that needed to be treated until I felt the rocks digging their way inside.

That was why my friends wanted me to stay back. It made sense. They knew what kind of trouble I'd get myself into, but I didn't listen to them. As my eyes peeled open to see what was going on, I knew I would've never listened to them, even if I knew my fate.

I needed that Lunar Wing. That man standing on the other side of the opening with Gallade had exactly that.

A heavy sigh escaped his lips. "Gallade, finish off Mienshao. I'll take care of her."

My hands pressed down to the ground, in hopes of getting up, but pain shot down my back. I hissed back in pain as there was no denying it. Hot tears escaped my eyes, even as I tried to stop them.

Something grabbed the collar of my suit and yanked me up. Pain shot everywhere in my body. All I wanted to do was sit down and continue to battle, but I couldn't. When I opened my eyes, I was face to face with the imposter.

"I warned you, we could've done this the easy way or the hard way," he said as he looked down. I wasn't sure what he was looking at until his free hand grabbed my belt—that had all my Poké Balls on it—and yanked it off my waist.

"Give that back," I protested as I started to reach for it, but I was too late. My entire body froze, as I couldn't move a muscle. Even as I tried to move my head, I couldn't move.

The hand that had wrapped around the top part of my suit loosened. I was forced to watch as the imposter took a step back, crossing his arms as a mischievous smile slipped onto his face. In the corner of my eyes, I could see Gallade standing there. His eyes were glowing. Because of Gallade, I was forced to stand on my own two feet without moving a muscle.

Just how did Rudi's own Pokémon turn out like this?

"Gallade, I'd like you to teleport us back right now so that we can get this mess over with once and for all," the imposter said.

Before Gallade could use Teleport, he had released me from Psychic, causing me to fall to the ground. I looked around, finding two things. The first was Mienshao's body laying on the ground. Her breaths were hollow, but I could tell she'd be able to make it. She'd have to, especially when I saw something that gave me a bit of hope.

Laying on the other side of the cave was a feather. It was hard to make out the colors until a line of light flashed beside it. Somehow, the imposter must've dropped the Lunar Wing. If Mienshao could get up, Audino might have a chance.

Either that, or Audino would never come back. I wanted to warn Mienshao about it, but everything turned black before I could even open my mouth.

Author's Note:

Oof. Cliffhanger. Don't you love them? But I will say, the next chapter will definitely be an interesting one. My goal is to have it up by next week, but if anything, it'll be up before the end of the month.

That sounds like I'm moving ahead of schedule, but I'm not. After the next chapter is posted, this story will be on hiatus until summer break comes. A better explanation on why this is will happen in the next chapter.

Oh! I almost forgot this chapter's question: what is your favorite Fighting-type Pokémon?

Believe it or not, I came up with this question not because a majority of the Pokémon in this chapter are Fighting-type, but because I had trouble deciding whether I wanted a picture of Mienshao, Sawk, or Gallade for this. Gallade was the first one out cuz I feel like that'd be a dead give-away. I went with Mienshao because she's more of a major character than Sawk.

Anyways, hope you all have a great day! Bye!
