71: Tough Decisions
"Oh, YN, this is not a good time." Iroh shook his head and looked at you very seriously.
"I know, I know... And I wanted ta talk to ya about it too..." You gulped. " 'Cause ya see it's only like two weeks in and I only know 'cause I'm a blood bender and 'cause I'm a blood bender I could do somethin' 'bout it! Ya see I could probably just... blood bend ma monthly blood inta comin' and it could all go away and I wouldn't hafta worry 'bout it and neither would Zuko, 'specially if he gon' be the Fire Lord! And I ain't think I could be the Fire Lordess, and then what we do with the baby then?! Do I keep 'em in the Swamp? So I was thinkin' it's so early maybe it ain't be so bad ta just do the whole thing and be done with it..."
Iroh held his hand up and then motioned for you to come close to him. Quickly you came close to him and became enveloped in a side hug.
"Oh, Iroh! I'm so scared!" You admitted as you wept lightly.
Iroh let out a deep breath.
"I would not want to let my opinions sway you in any way." He rubbed your shoulders gently. "So let me begin with this. You are very young. Both you and my nephew have a very long way to go until you are both wise adults such as myself."
"I know, I know..."
"But, at the same time, a child is such a wonderful thing. They can help you grow faster than you ever would by yourself and are a joy to have around. Especially as a great uncle!" He laughed a bit here. "They are hard work and can be very frustrating. You would be giving up much of your childhood: not that you haven't already."
"Did you have any kids, old man?"
"I had one son. In fact, the reason I can sit here without anger is because my situation was very similar to yours, although I was a few years older." You sat back on your pillow and listened. "I had just returned home from the Swamplands, devastated that I could not have Fei, your mother. So I turned to palace concubines."
"Iroh! You boar-q-pine!" You laughed. "Did ya enjoy 'em?"
"A little too much. One fell pregnant with my child: Lu Ten. And for many years, I loved Lu Ten with such fiery passion, that I never cared how he came about or that I had him when I had not hardly reached twenty." His head fell swiftly. "And so when I lost him... it made it all the more difficult."
"Iroh. I am so sorry." It was your turn to comfort the old man.
"So I say this to you, YN. Make the choice now, before you become attached. Lose the child now, or risk loving them with all of your heart and having to make the tough decision to lose them later. Because a child of the Fire Lord may not have any choice but to succeed them. And if you have not figured that out yet: it can be a very deadly position."
