Chapter Four

~
"Mom, can we pack up our bags and move to another town please?" I asked before I headed out to school. "Three people have disappeared without a trace."
"You'll be find sweetie." Mom said. "The police are upping their patrol now that Vera's gone missing."
"Yeah but is that really enough?" I asked. "I feel as if another person's gonna go missing no matter what."
"Sweetie, you worry too much." Mom said. "Have a good day at school."
*****
"Hi." The cute boy who was a couple of years older than me said to me when I walked in school. His name was Josh and holy shit, he was so handsome!
"Oh, hi." I said nervously. Secretly, I had a crush on him and I never thought that he would actually talk to me. "How are you doing?"
"Pretty good." He said. "Such a shame that people keep going missing, huh?"
"Yeah." I said. "I'm kinda scared because what if I'm the next person?"
"You don't have to be scared." He said. "I'll protect you."
I found myself giggling and blushing as I said, "Aw, thanks. But you don't have to do that."
Then, the unthinkable happened. He put his arm around me. My heart was pounding in my chest so much that it was a wonder how he didn't hear it.
"Yeah I do." He said. "Because I like you Scarlett."
"Y-you do?" I asked, not bothering to hide my surprise. "R-really?"
"Yeah." He said, showing off one of those signature smiles of his. "So, I've got two questions for you. One, do you want to go over to my house and hang out? Two, do you want to be my girlfriend?"
No. Fucking. Way. Josh just asked me to be his girlfriend and to hang out at his house? This is the best day ever!
"To answer both of your questions, yes." I said. "I will be your girlfriend and I will hang out with you after school."
"Sweet." He said, removing his arm from around my shoulders. "Meet me outside by the flag right after school. We can walk home together."
"Sounds good." I said.
"See you then." He said. Then, this day got a million times better. He kissed me on the cheek.
I couldn't hide the huge smile on my face as I said, "Okay."
*****
"You're meaning to tell me that Josh, the cute one, asked you to be his girlfriend, to hang out with him after school, and kissed you on the cheek?"
"Yep." I said. "Today's the best day ever!"
"I am so happy for you!" My best friend said. "What are you guys gonna do?"
"I don't know." I said. "Maybe he'll want to play some video games or work on some homework or something."
"You need to tell me everything that happens while you're hanging out with him tomorrow at lunch!" She said. "I want to know every bring down to the very first second that you meet up with him and to the very last second that you two spend together!"
"Calm down!" I said. "It's going to be exciting, but not that exciting."
*****
After school, I stuffed everything that I needed into my backpack and met up with Josh right by the flag, just like I told him that I would.
"You ready?" He asked me, holding his hand out. I swear that this is some amazing dream that I'm having. And if that's true, then I don't ever want to wake up.
"Yeah." I said, taking his hand. "Lead the way. I don't know where you live."
*****
"You got a lot of homework?" He asked me.
"Yeah." I said. "I have something from every class. I swear, my fucking back's gonna break by the time we get to your house."
"Me too." He said, laughing. "Guess what? My parents left me in charge of the house and I can do whatever I want until they get back on Sunday evening."
Josh's parents left the house to Josh a lot. And he would usually have legendary parties, or so I've heard.
"So I'm guessing you're going to throw one of your parties?" I asked.
"No." He said. "My parents found out that I had them and they said that I'm not allowed to have them anymore."
"That stinks." I said. I had actually wanted to go to one of his parties one day. "Did they take away your car too?" Josh was a senior and he always drove this really expensive car to school because his parents were super rich.
"Oh, yes." He said. He seemed surprised by the question. "They did."
He didn't sound so sure when he said that. I looked at him suspiciously. I noticed his eyes were golden in contrast to his usual light brown.
"I thought you had brown eyes?" I said.
"Oh, they change color." He said. "I can see why you never notice, seeing as we don't see each other much."
This was true. Josh and I didn't have any classes together so the only time I would get to see him was in the hallway. But our school was small, with only two floors so I would see him around the hall almost every day. And everytime I saw him, his eyes were always brown.
"Oh, okay." I said, still not convinced. Why was he telling so many lies?
"Man, lots of police out." He said as some officers nodded to us as we walked past them. We both nodded back so that they wouldn't be suspicious of us. "But I guess that's to be expected when three people go missing. Especially since it's unheard of in this town since those two serial killers died."
I had forgotten about them. But what if they hadn't actually died and they were behind all the kidnappings?
"Yeah." I said. "It is unheard of, isn't it?"
*****
When we got to his house, I was a little bit suspicious. It was a lot smaller than what I thought it was. I had seen his house before. It was the only mansion in this town. So why was he living in this normal house?
"Welcome to my humble establishment." He said, walking up to the door.
"What happened to your mansion?" I asked.
"This is my grandma's house." He said. "My house is a mess and I don't want you seeing it like that. Besides, my grandma's out for the night and she said that I can use the house whenever I want."
"Okay." I said, still suspicious of him as I entered the house. He closed the door behind him and locked it.
"Why'd you lock the door?" I asked.
"To make sure that no robbers or something can just walk in the house." He said, confused as to why I had asked that. "Duh."
Now I felt stupid. Ever since he acted weird back there, I've been questioning everything that he does.
"Do you want something to eat?" Josh asked as he dug through the fridge. "My grandma's got some leftovers in here."
"Sure." I said reluctantly.
"Don't be so scared." He said, taking a package of spaghetti out of the fridge and placing them in the counter. "Grandma's a wonderful cook."
"If you say so." I said. "I'm gonna go in the living room and get started on some of my homework."
"Okay." He said. "I'll do the same once the spaghetti's done."
"Sounds good." I said, breathing a sigh of relief when my backpack hit the floor with a massive thud.
*****
"Man, these senior classes are really hard." I said, examining Josh's homework when he asked me for help on it. He was glancing at my homework and having trouble, which was quite odd. Josh was in all honors classes and was on the path to becoming Valedictorian of his class. Me on the other hand, I was in all regular classes so Josh should be breezing through my homework pretty easily.
"I know." He said. "It's ridiculous how hard they are."
I glanced up at the clock and saw that we had been working on homework for almost three hours.
"Let's take a break and play some video games." I said, standing up. "Sound good?"
"Yeah." He said, standing up as well. "I got something to show you downstairs but you gotta promise to not tell anyone."
"I promise." I said. I wonder what he was referring to?
*****
"Ta da!" He said, showing me a strange white device that appeared to be a gaming system of some sort.
"What is that?" I asked. "It looks like something that Nintendo just came out with."
"You wanna know the crazy part?" Josh asked. "It's from two-thousand seven."
"What?" I asked like he had just told me that aliens were going to take over the entire planet. "How did you get something from that far in the future?"
He laughed and said, "My little sister can time travel."
"Josh, I think you hit your head on something." I said. "Time travel hasn't even been achieved yet."
"Oh, yes it has." He said. "Bree! Come out here!"
Suddenly, a girl with bright orange hair and hazel eyes appeared out of seemingly nowhere. She held her Han out towards me.
"She won't hurt you." Josh said. But it wasn't really that reassuring.
I took the girl's hand nonetheless and suddenly, a flash of white light appeared and disappeared within a second. I found myself in a bedroom. It looked pretty standard to me, but then I saw a strange device showing two guys who appeared to be British and they were drawing cat whiskers on their faces.
"What on earth is that?" I asked.
"It's called a computer." Bree explained. "It's like a smaller version of a TV."
"Oh." I said. Though I really didn't understand because it was a whole new concept to me.
"Here." Bree said, handing me a sharpie. "Draw cat whiskers on your face. It's fun."
"Um, okay." I said, taking the cap off and using the mirror that was on the desk right above the "computer". I drew cat whiskers like how the two British boys did.
"See?" Bree asked when she was done drawing her cat whiskers. "Isn't it soothing?"
"Yes?" I said, afraid of what would happen if I said no.
"We must go back." Bree said in a panic as she held her hand out to me. "The girl's coming back. We're screwed if she catches us."
I quickly grabbed her hand and we were back at Josh's place in a heartbeat.
"Hey, where'd Josh go?" I asked Bree once we were back. "Wasn't he just here?"
"I'm here." A voice said. But it certainly didn't sound like Josh's.
I looked over where I heard the voice and I saw a boy with sandy blond hair and golden eyes. I actually thought they were pretty cool but I was too creeped out by the situation to really focus on the beauty of them.
"Who are you and what did you do with Josh?" I demanded.
"Let me show you." The boy said. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. I watched as the little boy was replaced with Josh. I only got to take it in for a fees seconds before the little boy turned back to what he looked like before.
"They're real." I whispered.
"What? Shape shifters?" The boy asked. "Oh yeah, we're real."
"I knew that something was fishy." I said. "The golden eyes, the whole acting weird thing, but I never would've thought that it would turn out to be a shape shifter."
"Yep." The boy said. "Now that you know both of our secrets, it's time for you to play a little game."
"You're hilarious." I said, beginning to walk up the stairs. "You really think that I'm going to play some child's game with you? No. I'm out of here."
Suddenly, the door that lead to the basement slammed shut. I stopped walking and looked back at the two kids. Bree was holding her hand out, as if she was the one who had closed the door.
"Play the game with us." She growled. "You're going to be sorry if you don't."
At this point, I was terrified. I swallowed and said, "Fine. I'll play your game. What do I have to do?"
She began walking towards me and she got in front of me.
"Follow me." She said. "The game isn't played down here. But don't you dare try to run. Aiden's right behind you to make sure that you don't run."
"O-okay." I said.
*****
They led me to a room that looked like it belonged to one of them. What was creepy about it was that it had two hallways leading to it.
"This is the weapon that you'll use." Bree said, placing a flashlight in my hand. "And it's the only weapon that you'll use. No guns, knives, or anything like that."
"The doors are your only friends." Aiden said. "If you hear breathing, close the door or you'll be regretting it immediately."
"Check the closet and behind you." Bree said. "You'll also be regretting it if you do."
"That's all you really need to know." Aiden said. "The game runs from midnight to six AM. If you survive, there's a prize. If you don't survive, you pay a price."
"What kind of price?" I asked.
"A heavy one." Aiden said as he and Bree headed towards the door on the right. "Have fun and we wish you luck."
He closed the door and immediately Bree popped her head in.
"Actually, we don't." She said. "We hope you perish."
Before I could respond, she slammed the door. I glanced over at the alarm clock on the bedside table. It turned to midnight as soon as I looked at it. My heart pounded as I turned on the flashlight and ran to the door on the right. I hand shook as I put my hand on the knob and listened to the door creak as I slowly opened it. I calmed my breathing as I listened for some sort of noise outside the door. Nothing. I quickly ran over to the left door and did the same thing. Nothing.
I ran over to the bed and there were these strange looking Freddy Fazbear demon things. As soon as the light on them, they screamed and disappeared. Once they were gone, I ran over to the closet and I nearly had a heart attack when Foxy the Pirate's head emerged from the door and screamed in my face. Out of instinct, I slammed the door on him. I waited a few moments before opening it again. The only thing I saw was his book before I slammed the door shut again. I waited for a few moments again before opening the doors once more. The only thing there was a Foxy stuffed animal.
"What the hell?" I asked as I closed the doors and went back over to the bed. "I could've sworn that Foxy was in there."
I saw the Freddy demons again and they disappeared once more. I quickly glanced over at the clock. It was only twelve-o'-six.
"Are you kidding me?" I asked. "How am I going to last until six doing all this?"
*****
"No! Away!" I said, slamming the door shut when I heard a strange noise coming from the hallway. It sounded mechanical and I wondered if all of this was just some weird twisted dream that I'm having. I have strange dreams a lot so this was probably the case.
*****
"Man! It's only one-thirty!" I groaned. The hours seemed to past by so fast but I was always disappointed whenever I checked the clock.
"Why do I get the feeling that I forgot to check something?" I muttered.
Suddenly, I heard a creak as the closet door opened. I backed up as I saw Foxy emerge. But hey, it's just a dream right? I'm not actually going to die.
I just stood there while he came up to me, not panicking at all. I would wake up soon anyway. Everything will be okay.
Once I was within his reach, he wrapped his book around my throat and picked me up with it. I felt the hook around my throat and realized that this wasn't a dream.
This was all real.
I put my hands on his book in order to try and get him to release me. But he just wouldn't budge. The next thing I knew, he threw me and I landed on the wall. Everything was blurry and blood was trickling out from the new wound on my head. A blurry Foxy came over and stabbed the sharp part of his hook into my throat. And then, everything around me was pitch black.
