Chapter 7
The next day, the five high schoolers filled their bags with as much food and water as possible, along with some first aid supplies, and made their way out of the club room. As they walked out, Asahi got a glimpse of the damage Kiyoko had caused to the door. "Daaaamn," he whistled, "Remind me to never get on your bad side, Kiyoko-chan. I would not wanna be that door right now." She smirked. "Right. Now let's go before we get eaten. Ennoshita-kun, Hitoka-chan, and Yamaguchi-kun are already ahead!"
They sprinted to the gym. They seemed to have lucked out, zombies had cleared the area, so they mostly just had to evade the few stragglers that were left. Asahi took the lead and threw the doors open. "Everybody in!" He shouted, then closed the door behind Ennoshita, who was taking the rear. The closet door suddenly slammed open to reveal a shell-shocked Sugawara.
Soon, the whole team was hugging and talking together, but the absence of Narita and Nishinoya remained prominent. Daichi had already pulled the five aside and explained Narita's death, but Nishinoya's disappearance was still a mystery.
Upon hearing the news, Asahi had shouted, "What do you mean he's missing?! Where would he be?!" "Probably still at the store he went to for volleyball tape." Sugawara replied regretfully. "Well what are we waiting for, let's go get him!" Asahi had been frantic at this point, terrified for his friend, who had been all alone for almost a week without food or water. "Well, that's the problem," Tsukishima spat, "We could be risking our lives for someone who might be dead."
"He's not dead!"
The shout rang through the gym. Many of the first and second years jumped at the sudden sound, scared, and even more scared that it had come from Asahi, who despite his intimidating size and appearance was actually quite soft. "He's not dead and if you don't wanna save him then I'll do it by myself!" "Wait!" Suga shouted, breaking up the fight. "Hold up!" Daichi and I will go with you, but we need to be careful and stay together. I want him back as much as you do."
The gentle giant took a deep breath, calming himself. "Okay," he mumbled. Five minutes later the trio was sprinting down the pavement and into the street.
"Okay, so we need to find a car that was made before the 1990's."
"Koushi, why do we need to do that?"
"I'm hotwiring the car. I need a little bit of time and some rubber gloves. The rest I can handle myself. And hotwiring cars newer than the mid 90's doesn't work because of advanced anti-theft mechanics."
The boys were out of breath, but eventually Daichi shouted, "There!" And they made their way into a 1995 Honda Prelude, Asahi and Daichi guarding Sugawara as he worked the mechanics below.
As promised, in about 30 minutes the car engines revved up and was almost ready to drive. Suga jerked the steering wheel to break the lock, then motioned for the two boys to get in. Asahi hesitated for a second.
"Isn't this illegal?"
"Isn't this a zombie apocalypse?"
"...Touché."
They drove to the store as fast as they could. The place was crowded with undead corpses as far as the boys could see.
"How do we get in?!"
"Can we ram it?"
"If we do that, we die!"
"Well now what?!"
"Go out and run, If he's anywhere it's in a closet or a bathroom!"
Racing into the store, hitting zombies away with their weapons, they checked each individual bathroom first, shouting the name of the short ball of energy they were looking for.
"Nishinoya!"
"Nishinoya, answer me!"
And then...
A faint moan could be heard from the closet nearest to them.
"Daichi-san...?"
"In there!" Suga shouted, and pulled the door open.
It wasn't a pretty sight.
Nishinoya had bags under his half-closed eyes, with empty bags of food and bottles of water around him. His arm seemed to be in a cardboard cast, held together with flimsy volleyball tape. Daichi scooped him up and they sprinted back to the car, which only needed a small tweak from Suga this time, since be the hard work had already been done when they were driving to the store. The grey-haired boy sped back, not caring how fast he was going unless it was too slow to save Noya, who was fading in and out of consciousness as the ride continued.
Suga parked the car right in front of the gym and flung open the car doors. Asahi picked up Nishinoya as gently as he could and the boys urgently made their way back to the gym. Sugawara handled Nishinoya's arm, which he later said was probably broken, and laid the boy down to rest.
"He probably ran out of food and water, and the pain in his arm was just too much after that. I don't think managed to get his hands on actual water, and sports drinks can only get you so far." Asahi glanced nervously at the unconscious boy laying down in the corner of the room. He looked paler than usual. The team had zipped together their jackets and made a sort of makeshift blanket out of them for Nishinoya.
"All we can do now is wait," Sugawara said.
Safe to say Asahi couldn't sleep that night.
