eleven - "good bye."

February 15, 2013

Mira yelled out in pain and squeezed David's hand. He winced a bit but continued to hold her hand. The nurses were gathering around the two, but Mira vaguely noticed.

"You did this to me!" she shouted. David laughed a little and nodded.

"Uh huh. Stay strong, Mira," he said. "You can do it." She cried out again. She was wearing some fireproof gloves made by none other than Tony Stark. Just in case she started to blow up something.

"It's hurts like hell!" she said. He rubbed her arm.

"I know, I know."

"No you don't! Shut up!"

"Ok ok, I know that I don't know." He smiled at her, and she groaned.

"He's coming soon," the doctor said. David nodded excited.

"Push, Mira, come on!" he encouraged. Mira started pushing, tears filling her eyes. Why the hell can't pregnancy be easy?! she thought.

"Almost there!" the doctor said. Mira closed her eyes and began pushing with all her might. David held onto her hand and was saying encouragements. She felt her hands start to heat up, but the gloves stopped David's hands lighting on fire.

Before she knew it, there was a small cry. She relaxed and sank into the hospital bed, blinking away the tears. David rubbed her shoulder.

"You did amazing, babe," he said. She nodded, too tired to say anything. The nurses finished cleaning up the baby and then handed it over to her. Mira started crying again.

"This is ours," she whispered. The baby's eyes were still closed, but he wriggled around a bit in her arms. She loved him already.

"Yeah," David smiled, leaning over her shoulder. "Kaleb Tony Mark."

Three minutes later...

Before they could cherish the moment any longer, a group of people burst into the room. The nurses and doctors made some protest but then stopped when they saw who they were.

"His middle name is Tony?!" Steve declared. "How come I was not notified?!"

"Yeah, Mira!" Clint said, looking a bit mad. "If you remember, I was the first one to meet you!" Mira was about to defend herself when Tony walked in smugly, suit recently pressed and sunglasses perched on his nose.

"Why hello there, Mark's," he said with a proud grin. "Hello there, little Tony." Natasha rolled her eyes but went near the couple with a smile.

"Hey, Kaleb," she said softly. Mira held the baby near the redhead, and Natasha laughed a little when he reached up blindly. "He's active already. I can tell he's going to be a hyper one."

"Oh god," Mira groaned. They all laughed.

"He's so small," Bruce commented. He was watching from the corner, looking a little nervous. Mira waved him over, and he timidly walked closer.

"You don't have to be scared, Banner," she smiled. Bruce shyly smiled back. David looked around.

"Hey where's Tho-" Suddenly, there was a loud commotion outside and a bulky blonde dressed in full body armour ran into the room, frazzled.

"Where is the child of David and Mira?!" he demanded. All the Avengers (and David) shushed him loudly. He widened his eyes. "Sorry," he said in a still not quiet voice. Tony facepalmed. All the nurses had started swooning over the new arriver.

"Could we get a private moment?" Mira called to them. They all nodded quickly but still stole glances at Thor. "Damn, someone's popular."

"It must be the hair," Natasha snorted. She and Mira laughed while Thor looked confused.

"So Kaleb Tony Mark," Tony said, taking his time to say each word. Steve rolled his eyes but smiled at the baby. "Has a nice ring to it."

"Can we call him Kal?" Clint asked.

"Better than Little Tony," Natasha said. They high fived, and Tony narrowed his eyes.

"Yeah sure," David said. "I like Kal."

"Me too," Mira smiled.

"Kal it is," Steve announced.

"Maybe he can be an Avenger!" Clint grinned. David looked doubtful but didn't say anything.

"Maybe," Mira laughed. She looked at the people around her, the team of unlikely superheroes, her best friends. She had a good life. Nothing could ever change that.

"If he can wield the hammer, he can keep the Mind Stone. It's safe with Vision, and these days, safe is in short supply," Thor said seriously. Steve looked down.

"But if you put the hammer in an elevator..." he interrupted. Mira facepalmed.

"It would still go up," Tony said, with a shrug.

"Elevator's not worthy," Steve said.

"You two just ruined a perfectly good moment," she muttered, pulling on the sleeves of the leather jacket that was over her all-black suit.

"I'm going to miss these little talks of ours," Thor smiled. Mira smiled too. Tony patted his arm.

"Not if you don't leave," he said. Thor laughed a little.

"I have no choice," the blonde said. "The Mind Stone is the fourth of the Infinity Stones to show up in the last few years. That's not a coincidence." They walked outside, and the sounds of soldiers training was heard. Green lawns and tall trees lay in the distance. It was peaceful, something Mira greatly missed. "Someone has been playing an intricate game and has made pawns of us. But once all these pieces are in position..."

"Triple Yahtzee?" Tony said.

"You think you can find what's coming?" Steve said. He hooked his thumbs into the straps of his suit. Thor nodded.

"I do," he said. "Besides," he started walking away, "there is nothing, other than this one," he patted Tony, "that can't be explained."

"I disagree," Mira cut in. "There's like the Stephen Hawking black hole stuff. Or the history of the universe. Or whether or not magic is real. Or-" Steve put a hand over her mouth. "Hey!" she said, muffled. Thor shook his head with a laugh and proceeded to point his hammer at the sky. There was a bright flash of lightning rainbow, and then he was gone. Instead of his big figure, a Norse emblem lay burned into the grass. The three looked at it, and Mira pulled Steve's hand off.

"That dude has no respect for lawns," Mira said. Tony snapped his fingers.

"I was just about to say that," he grumbled. "Stop stealing my one liners, Mark."

"Never," she grinned.

"I'm going to miss him, though," Tony admitted. They started walking towards the paved driveway. "And you two are going to miss me."

"I doubt that," Mira scoffed.

"You named your son after me, Mira; don't get ungrateful now," he said and shook his head at her. His sunglasses glinted in the sun. She rolled her eyes.

"His name is Kaleb, not Tony."

"Could've named him Steve," Steve muttered. Mira facepalmed again.

"Whatever," she said. "I say you all are going to miss me the most."

"There's going to be a lot of manful tears," Tony shrugged. Mira laughed.

"Lots."

"So you're going back home now?" Steve asked her. She nodded.

"I've left David with Kal too long. I'm kinda worried they burned down the apartment or something."

"That's your job," Tony pointed out. She slapped his arm. "Ok, ow."

"They're probably fine," said Steve. She nodded, saluted, and started to walk away.

"See you two bozos later hopefully. Bye Cap! Bye Stark!" she said. They both waved.

Later that day...

Mira sighed as she finally reached the apartment. Her car crunched on the parking lot gravel and rolled to a stop. Stepping out, she almost ran up the stairs, excited to see her now two year old son. He was growing up fast, but he still was their little baby who loved playing with action figures of the Avengers (they didn't buy him the Dynamite one though, Mira thought it was offensive).

She pulled out her keys and clicked open the door. Bright yellow lights washed over the floor, and she grinned as she felt a small force run into her legs. She walked in as best as she could, closed the door, and bent down to hug Kaleb.

"Hey, buddy!" Mira laughed. "How are you? Did you have fun with Dad?"

"Mommy," he murmured into her pants. She grabbed him and picked him up, swinging him around a little bit. He giggled, and she walked over to the kitchen with him on her hip. She saw David sitting at the table, a tired smile on his face. He walked over and gave her a small peck on the lips. Kaleb was playing with Mira's hair, distracted and innocent. His big brown eyes started to droop slightly. "Aw, is someone tired?"

"I told him to go to sleep, but you know," David shrugged with a sigh. "He doesn't listen to me." Mira nodded with another smile.

"I'll put him down. Be right back." She looked back down at Kal, who put his head on her shoulder. "C'mon, Kal, let's go to sleep."

After a few minutes of wrestling the toddler into his pajamas, Mira walked back to the kitchen where David was sitting again. He had a pile of papers in front of him, his smile transformed into a weary face.

"Hey," Mira said, standing behind him. She started rubbing his back gently and looked over his shoulder. "Boring work stuff?" she teased.

"Yeah," was he said. She pulled over a chair and sat next to him.

"Sorry I was gone for so long," she apologized. "I didn't mean to leave for that long."

"It's fine," David replied shortly. Mira bit her lip.

"Are you ok?" she asked. she was starting to get a little worried - David wasn't usually...distant.

"You're never home," he responded, head down. She blinked.

"What?"

"You're never home anymore," he repeated. "Do you know how many days I have to take off of work to watch him while you're gone on-on these missions?"

"Well...I'm really sorry but I'm here now," said Mira. She pushed a piece of hair back.

"And how long is that going to last?" David scoffed slightly. "A week? Maybe a month? Then you'll go off again to the team? And," he added, "you don't even get paid for all the stuff you do!"

"Because I'm not supposed to!" Mira furrowed her eyebrows.

"You're leaving your family behind!" David said loudly. He turned to look at her. He looked mad. Mira couldn't help but feel mad also. Her whip sparked slightly under the jacket sleeve.

"I would never put the Avengers before my family!" she shouted back. "That's crazy!"

"Well that's what you're doing! Don't you realize that?!"

"Ok well," Mira feigned an apologetic tone, "I'm sorry that I have to save the world? I mean, what do you want me to say?!"

"How about, 'I'll stay home'?" David suggested, sarcasm in his words. "What about, 'I'll be here with my family, instead of with my egoistic friends'? How about that?" They were both standing up now.

"They are not egoistic!" she protested. "They're my friends!"

"Well your so called 'friend'," he said with air quotes, "almost killed you!"

"It was a mistake!"

"Oh! Oh really?" David laughed coldly.

"Yes! He's Tony freaking Stark! He's anything but perfect!" Mira yelled. There was a soft smell of burning, and they both looked down to see the back of Mira's chair igniting in flames. "Oh shit," she mumbled, quickly pulling her hand off the burnt wood.

"I got it," David muttered. He ran off to the sink to get a towel. Mira watched a bit helplessly. "Here." He handed her the wet rag, and she patted the fire out. They waved away the smoke and stared at the chair.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. David sighed and then walked off into their room. Mira sat down and put her head into her hands.

April 12, 2016

Mira waved as Kaleb walked off into the playground. She leaned back into the park bench and sighed, putting her head towards the cloudless sky.

"Tough being a mom?" a familiar voice said. She turned and saw Clint Barton with his hands in his jacket pockets and sunglasses covering his eyes. She smiled.

"Hey, Barton," she said. He sat next to her, and they both gazed at the play area filled with screaming children. "Yeah. Tough life." She laughed.

"Having kids is crazy, huh?" he said. She nodded. "You ever coming back to the team?" Mira sighed and put her elbow on the bench's metal arm.

"Don't think so," she said reluctantly. Clint raised an eyebrow.

"Really? Why not?"

"J-just family stuff," she stammered. He shifted towards her.

"Like..."

"David doesn't want me to join again," she said, looking down at the cement. Clint raised an eyebrow again but nodded.

"Where's David right now?" he said, changing the subject. Mira shrugged.

"He said he's out with work friends," she replied. Clint looked at her. "What?"

"Sounds fishy."

"Everything sounds fishy to you, Barton."

"Except when it sounds birdy."

"Very funny."

"Thanks." He grinned at her, and she laughed. There was a comfortable silence. "So did you hear about the Accords?"

"The what?" Mira turned to face him.

"The Sokovia Accords," Clint said. He shook his head. "Tony didn't tell you?"

"Well, we've been...distant," she said. The honest answer was that David had made her delete most of her superhero friends' contacts. They were all busy, so they probably hadn't noticed anyways. At least, that's what she told herself.

"That means you're probably not included," said the man. Mira shrugged again.

"I'm getting used to always being left out," she said with a small smile. He smiled back.

"We miss you, Dynamite."

"Yeah yeah. I'm the MPV for the team, huh?" she teased.

"Nope. I am."

"Goddamnit, Barton."

"There are children here, Mira!"

July 29, 2017

Mira walked into the house, hands full of groceries. She heard Kaleb playing in his room and smiled to herself. She put the bags on the table and noticed David walked down the hallway.

"Hey babe, how was work..." Mira slowed down as she noticed a suitcase behind him. He cleared his throat.

"Hey."

"Uh what are you doing?" she asked, voice shaking. "W-work trip?"

"No."

"Surprise family vacation?" she suggested, trying to lighten the mood. The brunette shook his head.

"I've leaving," he said, face set. Mira was speechless.

"Wha...when...how...you can't...oh my god!" She pushed back her hair, still in disbelief.

"I'm leaving."

"You...you can't!" she said, shocked. "Where are you gonna go anyways?"

"Sherrie's," he said. She widened her eyes.

"Oh Sherrie?! What the hell?!"

"Mira!" he said, mad. "I can't take this anymore!"

"Take what?"

"You're too invested in this stupid superhero thing!" he yelled. Mira scoffed.

"I quit that stuff for you, David!"

"I know that you still go around the Stark Tower," he said. She clenched her hand into a fist.

"I don't go in though!" she responded. Her whip sparked under her jacket.

"Still! I told you not to go over there! You're not an Avenger anymore! Jesus!" He laughed harshly. "Can't you get that into your head, Mira?"

"I gave it all up for you, ok?" Mira said, getting more mad. "And you've never had to prove to the world that you're actually a good person! People used to treat me like dirt because I'm Asian AND a mutant! The Avengers helped! You helped too!"

"Oh so this is all about you, huh?" David mocked.

"You're missing my point! And I haven't talked to any of them in years!" she said, half lying. Her knuckles were white. "I did everything you told me to do!"

"I didn't tell you to do anything," he said, slightly rolling his eyes.

"I deleted all their numbers, I stayed away from the tower and the base, I threw away my uniform," she ticked off her fingers. "Should I go on?"

"I didn't force you to do those things," he said. Mira was practically steaming. All the anger inside of her from over the years was bubbling inside her stomach.

"Yes you did, goddamnit!" She almost slammed her hand on the kitchen table. "I did so much for you! And you cannot leave! You're leaving me a single mom!"

"Oh wow so hard!" he said, faking sympathy. "Well I was a single dad for months, so just get used to it."

"Kal needs a dad," said Mira, tears pricking her eyes. David couldn't be leaving. This was all just a dream, right?

"Yeah well maybe you can get Archerman watch him," David rolled his eyes. Mira gritted her teeth. "Or you could also ask the almighty Tony Stark! I mean, we named our son after him, right?" He looked at her.

"Hey, I did what you said and changed it to Kaleb, ok?" she defended herself.

"With a K," he spat. She threw up her arms.

"Does it really matter? I am sorry that we named our son after your grandfather who was Caleb with a C. But I thought K would be cooler!"

"It's always about you, isn't it?" David said. "And I didn't ask for a kid, ok? I thought we'd have more time before, but apparently not!" He rolled his eyes again and started walking towards the front door. Panic flashed through Mira's brain and she ran in front of him.

"You what?! Stop! Wait, you can't just leave me!" she almost shouted.

"You're so fcking selfish, Mira!" he yelled back. "You never thought about me and how I was coping! You never asked about anything!"

"I'm sorry ok?!" she said. "We can work this out, but you just need to stay!"

"I can't do that," he muttered. He pushed past her shoulder, and she watched him get closer to the door, paralyzed.

"You can't leave! You have a son!" she said, starting to get desperate.

"Yeah? Well I don't want a mutant freak as a kid!" he said back, getting his jacket. She walked up to him. Tears threatened to spill.

"You don't know that he has powers," she said. "And you're the one who said this would all work out." David shook his head and opened the door.

"Well I don't want to know! I don't want him!" He walked out the door. "Bye, Mira." The Asian tried to make her feet move, but her brain was in shock.

"How fcking dare you!" she yelled at him. "Hey! Come back! David!" The brunette walked down the hallway and turned the corner as she shouted. Mira's shoulder dropped, and she slowly closed the door. She walked towards the table, as if in a dream, and sat down heavily. She cried.
