Mariella knows putting up a Craiglist ad looking for a roommate is probably a bad idea, but it's not like she's had any luck anywhere else. She needs to save money if she doesn't want to go into school debt, and if that means inviting a potentially shady stranger to split rent with her? Well... then so be it. If she's lucky, maybe she'll even get a new friend out of it!

Or: Dabi needs a place to call his own for cheap. He finds one— he just didn't think he'd have to share it, and certainly not with optimism incarnate.

-Mariella is the definition of shy optimism. If there is a bright side, she's looking right at it. That's probably the only reason she agrees to let Dabi live with her in the first place. Dabi is Lowkey disgusted with her cheerful outlook

-Like they live in a one bedroom, one bathroom ramen box. The roof leaks in one corner. Dabi looks like shit and is honestly mean as hell, and their fridge sucks. Why is she still smiling.

-They initially meet up in a public place, at a cafe. Dabi is 101% expecting a 6'5" tatted guy with a killer quirk, because someone like that wouldn't be afraid to post an ad on Craigslist of all places for something as personal as living together, or a tweaky drug addict or something.

-Imagine his surprise when Mariella pops up and is like "You must be Dabi! It's so nice to meet you!" and just fr shakes his hand. Does not give one singular shit about his scars.

-He's like "Girl didn't you say it's one room. Like a studio apartment. Like we're going to be sharing a space even when we sleep."

-And she's like "Yeah but don't worry! I already have a second bed! And I promise I don't snore!" As though THAT'S what he was worried about

-Half the reason he says yes is bc if he doesn't, someone else is gonna come fucking kill this chick in her sleep. His bed is like less than ten feet away from hers.

-The thing with Mariella is that she treats him like they've been best friends their whole lives on the first day he moves in. She treats everyone like that. And Dabi can't kill her, or be mean to her even, because she could kick him out. So he just sits there and politely nods a bunch

-She's actually so sweet though like she doesn't talk his ear off. She's just really nice. Dabi sorta feels like he's getting Stockholm Syndrome from her

-They do actually become fairly fast friends. Like, he physically is unable to be mean to someone so nice. He'd feel too much like his dad. He just complies with whatever's going on and stands there. Let's her chatter and bounce around him. Hands her ingredients while she cooks.

-Mariella definitely just finds strays. Stray animals. Stray people. Stray kids. She fo sho drags Hitoshi back at some point, but by then Dabi is so used to it that he just sighs and moves on about his day. He gets home and is like "oh, another one"

-Ft. Mariella throwing various objects at the backs of villains' heads, because her luck has her running into them constantly, and her knocking them out. And Ft. Dabi having a heart attack over it

-Accidental vigilante arc? Everyone thinks Mariella is one because she keeps running into villains and throwing shit at them, and everyone thinks Dabi's one because he keeps showing up to help

-They adore each other

-It's a slow friendship build but like, when you live with someone in a single room with your beds feet apart and eat together every night, it's sort of hard not to get close. Especially when Mariella is so persistently happy all the goddamn time

-And that's the story of how Dabi kidnapped Bakugo a second time! Except this time he kidnapped him away from the league and took him to his apartment instead and now they're trying to get the muzzle and cuff things off

-Mariella has smth about her that makes you want to be polite to her. Like being rude just seems so mean. So when they spring Bakugo he's like "Thank you ma'am 🗿"
