Recap:
"Truth dust...?" Mason looks at the pouch. "Truth dust?!"
"Yeah.. You didn't hear me...?" Sonya blinks
"Why---?! Why didn't you tell me about this before?!" Mason looks at Evi
"Uhhh... Why would I..?" Evi is confused
Sonya seems to realize where Mason is going with this
"Firo's trial is in 40 hours..... And before now, our only problem was that brat not telling the truth!" Mason is excited.
"So..?" Kanna blinks in confusion. "You're point?"
"Forget breaking into a mini prison to jailbreak Firo--- Let's use that dust on that brat and get him to tell the truth in the trial!!" He grins. "We'll get Firo out of being jailed--- and that spoiled hateful brat will finally get what he deserves for getting Firo in this mess in the first place!" A full grin spreads across Mason's face, in what is the first happy expression I've seen from him ever since Firo was suspended.
Most of the next 39 hours were filled with planning and then re-planning, and then re-planning again. We all agreed that we obviously couldn't just waltz into a court room and throw dust at the human witness, for obvious reasons. We wanted to be very careful about it, to avoid suspicion, but we didn't want to run up to him three hours before the trial and throw massive amounts of dust at him so it would last.
The middle ground seemed like the best option, however, none of us knew how long the trial would last, meaning that the amount of dust we would need was unknown, which made this whole things incredibly difficult for Sonya
"Unless she just has pounds of this stuff laying around- but I doubt it.." Thresh comments
"You can hear my narrating??" I blink and look at Thresh
"Uhh, yeah.. You talk out loud when you do long narrations like that.." Kanna nods
"It's funny to listen to.." Kiki giggles. "But sometimes you say only half of those long paragraphs and we get to mad-lib the rest."
"Oh.." I blink in surprise
"Can you guys stop breaking the forth wall and help me?" Mason looks back at us
"Whoops, right." Kiki peers over his shoulder at the notebook he had been using to write our plans. "Whatcha got so far?"
At the moment, Mason, Thresh, Kiki, Kanna, and I were sitting in the library, at one of the round tables, with Mason's notebook in the center of the table, and Kiki jumping around from sitting to standing to walking a few times around the library. I quickly glance around the table and no one is looking at me, I had gotten away with narrating this time
"We need to make it close to when the trial begins... With enough dust to last an hour.. I think that will be enough." Mason explains.
"But not when he's entering the actual building." Kanna nods
"Actually- I think throwing it at him when he's entering the building is the best course of action.." Thresh states. "That way we can get it as close to the actual trial as possible, and we won't have to use a lot of dust."
"But there's no way he'd be going in alone.." Kanna blinks. "And if we threw dust in his face, wouldn't that cause more than a little suspicion?"
"Not if we did it the right way." Thresh smiles slightly
Kiki blinks in confusion. "The right way..?"
Thresh's plan was simple, but the kind of simple that creates genius. After discussing portions with Sonya, we discovered that it would take about two pouches of the dust to do the job, and we easily got the materials we needed to make this work
Then all we had to do was wait
Which, surprisingly, was the hardest part. We came up with the plan relativity fast, but after that the waiting dragged on and on, we had everything ready, but now we just had to wait until we could go to the court room and wait to strike. And no, you're not getting a full explanation of the plan because Thresh is starting to look at me like I'm crazy.
"Yeah.." Thresh nods
"Was I seriously talking outloud?" I look up through Thresh's line into my narration
"Yes. Just bits and pieces this time." Kiki states
"But there aren't any dialogue tags or quotation marks.." I blink in confusion
"There aren't apostrophes that would mark that it's your thoughts either." Thresh points out.
"I think it's a subconscious thing, I guess. You don't even know you're doing it." Kanna looks up aswell
"The fourth wall has had enough for this chapter guys." Mason looks at us
"Yeah, I guess you're right." Kiki nods
The room falls silent again.
"Sooooooooo.... Can one of you explain why exactly there are only two witnesses in this trial?? And why no one is allowed to decide what happens except a single judge...?" I offer a conversation topic
"What?" Kiki blinks in confusion and looks at me
"Do you want me to repeat or...?" I look confused
"What do you mean explain? Why would we need to explain?" Thresh is confused
"I don't know.. Isn't there supposed to be a jury and like.. more witnesses then just two...? And like... Lawyers.....?" I pause. "My lack of knowledge when it comes to law enforcement may be partially inaccurate-- but I'm 90% certain those are things that happen.."
Kiki and Thresh don't say anything for a while, before Kiki leans over to Thresh. "What is she talking about...?" Kiki whispers
"I have no idea.." Thresh whispers
"Maybe it's different in.. Wherever she moved here from..." Mason joins in on the confusion
"But that makes no sense." Thresh and Kiki whisper in unison
"Actually- it is different for us." Kanna states. She looks at me. "Right? In Dovenport you have a jury of like three-ish people who make the final call.. And each side gets like ten witnesses.. Right..?"
"And I thought my law enforcement knowledge was limited." I blink
Kanna looks a bit annoyed with that comment, but continues to explain. "Basically, in our court system, there are two sides, one human side, and one creature side. The humans get one witness and the creatures get one witness. An unbiased judge gets to make the final call and whatever they say goes as the final word. And there are no lawyers.. It's really more of a short debate than a trial if I'm honest...."
"Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of a fair trial if only one person decides everything...?" I blink
"It's how it's always worked." Thresh states.
"Sometimes people try to change it but n one will change because all the "unbiased" judges are human and that's the way they'd like it to stay the way it is.." Kanna sighs
"But that's completely corrupt!" I protest
"Yeah.. It really is.." Kanna sighs
"Why is yours different...?" Kiki is still confused
"Because in Dovenport, the creatures and human aren't kept separated, and there is mutual communication and respect between both sides." Kanna states. "Unlike here where we all spend 99% of our time separated..."
I slowly. "I should take you all to Dovenport sometime.. It really is a wonderful t-"
"FINALLY!" Kiki stands up, "IT'S TIME TO LEAVE!"
I take a quick glance at the clock and stand.
"Let's go teach that spoiled brat a lesson." Kanna stands
"And help Firo not go to prison." Mason states
"Right, that to." Kanna nods
"We do this every other month." Kiki states
"Beat a horse till it's dead." I shrug. "And now it's dead."
"Last time Firo get's in major trouble!!" Kiki throws her arms up and runs out of the apartment
So we all climbed into Thresh's car, and drove to the Courthouse, thirty-five minutes before the trial. We all hid along the sides of the courthouse and now we had to wait. Again
Luckily we didn't have to wait for long this time, and William showed up after only about five minutes, with his father escorting him in. "Thirty minutes early to a court case... Geez.."
The plan was simple, wear all black, stay hidden, and throw water balloons full of the "truth dust" at William until at least two hit him in the face. We agreed that this would be the best way to get the timing as close to the trial as possible, while also looking like we were just kids pranking two humans with water-balloons full of flour, though we did all have masks on just in case anyone saw us
In total, the author is bad at writing action scenes, so here's a summary:
Eight balloons were thrown, two hit William in the face, the intended target. but three hit Charles in the chest, the not-so-intended target
And the rest hit the sidewalk
We hopped over the fence and ran away from the court house, Mason teleporting us back to the apartment once we were out of sight. We all took off our masks, and put everything away, and changed clothes into something more formal. Ten or fifteen minutes passed and Mason teleported us back to the courthouse and we all took our seats, on the creature side of the courtroom
Luckily this was an open trial so we had access to watch. Surprisingly, Evi and Sonya were also there, sitting in the row of seats behind us
"Why exactly are you here?" Kanna looks back at them
"We wanted to see if Firo makes it out okay." Sonya had dressed formally
"If this backfires I'm planning on throwing the human kid out the window." Evi had not dresses formally
"I'd hate you a lot less if you did that even if Firo is proved innocent." Mason states
"Okay, then I'll do it." Evi snickers
"No she won't." Sonya states calmly
"Never mind." Evi laughs slightly
"One of you is a lot more mature and has a lot better morals than the other- and it's ironically not the older one." Thresh states.
Evi laughs, "That's true."
"Shh!" Kanna looks back at us. "It's starting." She whispers
We look ahead of ourself and the trial begins. The entire courthouse is split in two, the humans on the left side and the creatures on the right. In the actual trial area, there are two desks within each side, one desk for the human witness to sit in, and another for the creature witness to sit in. Beyond that and away from the main door, on the far side of the room, is a large desk where the judge sits, in the center of the division line, his desk laying evenly on both sides of the court. I look toward the creature witness desk on our side of the room, and see our headmistress sitting there. And on their side, William, with a bit of white powder on his tux.
Kanna suddenly taps on my shoulder and I look towards where she's pointing, at the judge seat.
"It's official... We're doomed..." Mason whimpers
Charles Hanbridge takes his place in the judges seat. "Let's get started."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HA JUST KIDDING IM NOT ENDING IT THERE WE'RE STILL GOING
"He didn't even need to bribe the judge.." Mason places his face in his hands and looks at the ground
"We can still pull it off." Thresh whispers
"How..?" Mason mumbles. "No matter what they say, he will say that Firo is guilty.."
"We hit him with some balloons." Thresh states
"In the chest." Mason mumbles
"Theres a chance he inhaled some..." Thresh is trying his best to convince Mason, but it doesn't seem to be working
The judge looks toward his son. And they both nod to each other.
"Please make your opening statement."
"Where's Firo..?" I whisper to Kanna
"She doesn't get to be here." Kanna whispers
"For her own trial?" I look at Kanna
William stands.
"She's watching from a separate place.. They bring her here when it's over."
"What??" But that makes no sense!"
William clears his throat and I look back at the trial, where William is glaring at me. Guess I should shut up..
William takes a breath. "Firo Ignacia, is not guilty."
Mason looks up, and grins happily.
William seems completely confused. "She..." he stops and restarts. "She.. isssssssssnooooott guilty." He looks frustrated. "She didn't do anything anything wrong! I framed her!" He slams his hands on the desk in front of him. "What is wrong with me?!"
Evi snickers
"Sheeee...." William tries again. "Did not snap the gate lock open and didn't even come to the school herself, in fact, she had no plan to come back or burn anything. We framed her and forced her to do everything that she's accused of, she is completely innoc-" he covers his mouth and sits down, giving a half-terrified half-apologetic look to his father
The judge clears his throat, and quickly decides to move on. He gestures to our headmistress, as if insisting that she should start speaking.
She stands. "I think he said enough." And sits down
"Do either of you have anything else to say?" He looks around
William uncovers his mouth. "I--" he quickly covers his mouth
The judge sits down and clears his throat
"And now it's over..." Mason sighs
"Not yet." Thresh whispers. "Look." He points across the room near the door. Two red chairs sit next to the main doors, a human man wearing a suit sitting in the chair on the left, and a woman with four arms and blue skin sitting on the right
Mason looks. "Yeah..?"
"I would've known if that guy was a possible judge for this trial." Thresh smiles. "He applied recently, I'm guessing within the past few days, just so he could be a judge in this trial I'm guessing."
"They really want to send Firo to prison..." I blink
"Well being a judge yourself when you've already gone to school for it- and then quitting as soon as your trial is done, is a lot less expensive than bribing the judge with 5,000 to 50,000 dollars." Thresh points out
"50,000 dollars? Do people really pay that much to bribe off judges here?" I look at Thresh
"Do you know how rich the Hanbridge family is?? Of course they would pay that much." Thresh whispers
"Get to the point-- who are those people?" Kiki points to the people by the door
"They're his supervisors." Thresh states. "They'll call him out, even if the truth dust has no effect and he says Firo is guilty."
Mason perks up, then pauses. "Wait.. If he had enough time to apply and be accepted for a judge application..."
"Yeah.. I'm guessing they've been planning this trial for a long time.. probably since we went to the beach and Firo pissed this kid off in the first place." Thresh states. "And he also probably brined his way into be here as well.."
Charles stands and clear his throat. "I've taken this all into consideration, and I find Firo Ignacia.. Innocent and remove all charges against her." He looks confused when the words come from his mouth
Kiki snickers. "We got him."
The main doors open and a very confused looking Firo steps out. The two officers who led her in unlock her handcuffs and push her forward
She's still wearing the same clothes she had been arrested in, but otherwise looks fine.
The two officers leave and we all quickly stand up and walk over to Firo as the courthouse clears out.
"That was... surprising..." Firo is unsure of what to say in her confusion. Mason immediately hugs her, and she hugs back but still looks like she's trying to process what just happened.
As the two Hanbridge family members leave the courthouse, she earns two hate-filled glares, which she grins back at
"You're welcome." Kiki smiles
The headmistress stops near us before she walks out and smiles to Firo. "I'll be lifting your suspension as well, so don't forget to come back to school, alright?" She calmly walks out
"Why did they...?" Firo is completely confused. "I definitely thought they would've lied....."
"They would have lied!" Kiki smiles. "But we did something to them!"
"What did..? Nevermind I'll ask later.." she pauses and Mason releases her, smiling.
"I'm so happy that worked!!" He smiles happily
"Glad to see you're okay." Firo jumps in surprise as Evi sets a hand on her shoulder.
Evi calmly walks out of the courthouse with her hands in her pockets. "Still would've liked to throw that kid out a window though.."
Sonya happily waves goodbye to us and happily runs out of the building
