A Rainbow Of Faces

PROMPT:  @magic  You wake up one day to find anything you wish for comes true. Then you make a subconscious wish that makes things start to go wrong.

I'm hiding out behind the cafe dumpster because it stinks. As much as the whole situation.

I'm on the verge of wishing away this wishing ability I woke up with this morning. I haven't only because after I recognized whatever I absently wished for came true (it was raining, I wanted sun; sleek hair like the model on the shampoo commercial), and after I went a little wish-crazy (an electric car that never needs charging, always having enough money for whatever I want, a purse I never lose that always has whatever I need in it, stuff like that), then I wanted to solve world hunger and create world peace. What a rush to realise I could make a real difference in the world. I didn't want to mess up the wording, though, so I wished myself to be the smartest person who ever lived.

Phew!

It hit me I didn't know how long this wish gift would last and I better get on it.

Nodding to myself, I said, "Fresh air will help with wording. And lunch."

That's when the trouble started.

I forgot this weekend was my high school's ten-year reunion. Main Street seemed full of everyone I knew from back then.

Catcalls of "Geek!" "There's four-eyes!" "What'chu want, loser?" followed me as I headed for the cafe.

Behind me, I heard laughter and a few screams.

Looking back, I saw Bonnie Richards and her nasty crew's faces were turning different shades of green. Bonnie's so dark green it was almost black. Some of the jocks, most of whom I tutored and were friendly behind closed doors, were turning various shades of red, yellow or green.

"What's going on?" I heard from someone behind me. All the way down the street, people were coming out of shops.

I shrugged. "I don't know."

Quickly it became clear almost every person who looked me in the eye or spoke to me began turning a rainbow of colours.

"What could Bonnie be jealous of me about?" I murmured to myself.

Then I caught her side-eyeing Neil Patton, the point guard who I discovered during our tutoring sessions was sweet and funny when not with the jocks, who had a bright red face.

His eyes tracked me as I sidestepped into the alley before anyone else figured it out.

I ran for the far end to hide behind the dumpster.

"Selma, I know you're here, and somehow changing people's face colour." He peeked down at me. "I'm glad you know how I feel now. Can I, maybe, take you out?"

Perhaps this subconscious wish wasn't so bad, after all.

I smiled. "First, let's talk world peace."
