On the way home from work, Eddie stopped at the new corner store that had popped up on the block next to the one that held yours and his apartment. He'd promised he wouldn't check it out until you were with him, but it had been up since March - and now it was the middle of December, and you were nine months pregnant and unable to go anywhere.
Eddie stepped inside. He smiled at the cashier, who was counting money and tucking the bills back into the drawer. He waved and then swooped down to grab one of the shopping baskets.
"How are you?" he asked politely.
"Good," he said. "You?"
"Just fine," he said.
To his symbiote, he whispered, "What sounds good for a midnight snack?"
HMM...
"Chocolate?" Eddie muttered, gazing at the shelves. "White, dark, milk? With nuts, or creme, or mint, or peanut butter-"
YES! CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER CUPS.
"Got it," Eddie said. He grabbed all of the Reese's cups that were left on the shelf and dropped them in his basket.
Eddie grabbed a few drinks from the freezers in the back, and then he turned to head back to the shelves. He paused his steps as he faced the cash registers.
WHY ARE YOU HESITATING?
"I, uh, think we should get something for ___," he said softly. The cashier gave him a weird look; he didn't know that Eddie wasn't talking to himself.
GOOD IDEA.
Eddie walked by the flowers, but they were cheap and it showed. So he wandered to the stuffed animals. It was tacky, but it would at least make you laugh.
While he browsed through the hot pink teddy bears and the pastel blue stuffed dogs, he called you. He cradled the phone between his cheek and shoulder.
It rang until it got to voice mail.
"Hey, babe," he said, leaving you a message, "thought I'd catch you making dinner or something like that. Maybe you're sleeping and you won't even get this message. Anyway, I stopped at the store on my way back from work. Just didn't want you to worry. I'll see you in a few. Love you."
He hung up and as he pocketed his phone, and out of the corner of his eye, he saw a skinny rack of clothes. Baby clothes.
He walked over to it and smiled with a gentle hum. He picked up the small outfit that was a soft pink. On it said DADDY'S LITTLE MONSTER - and it had cute, hot pink monsters on it. He couldn't help but think about how cute his little girl would look in it.
He picked it up and put it in the basket.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW?
"What? ___ will love it and the baby will look adorable," he said.
Eddie went to check out. He placed his basket on the counter and the cashier emptied it. As Eddie dug his wallet out of his jean pocket, the cashier chuckled. He had the outfit in his hands.
"Expecting a little girl?" the man asked.
"Any day now," Eddie said proudly.
"Congratulations," he said. He scanned it with the rest of the items, double bagging the bottled drinks, and handed the bags to him.
"Thank you, sir," Eddie said.
As he left the store, he couldn't help but think about how happy he had been. From the day you found out that you were pregnant, he had been happier than he ever thought he could be. You had given him everything he'd ever dreamed of in such a short amount of time.
He walked back to his motorcycle.
//
There was a strange, smoky smell in the air around them. Eddie brushed it aside. But pulling onto his street, he was suddenly aware of how packed it was.
"What in the..." he muttered.
Venom said, FIRE. I SMELL FIRE.
Eddie's motorcycle went up the hill that was in the middle of the street, and he slammed on his breaks.
"Oh God," he breathed. His heart stopped and fell somewhere far, far below him.
The entire apartment building that you and Eddie lived in was engulfed in flames.
"Oh no, oh no..."
He was speeding there now, slamming to a stop once more as he nearly hit the crowd of people watching. They were all crying and recording on their phones. Eddie ran to the police tape and jumped over it, ignoring the frustrated shouts from the officers.
The heat was intense, and he flinched, mostly for Venom's sake. Venom couldn't touch flames; they would kill him faster than anything.
"Venom," he said, and a police officer grabbed Eddie's arm.
"Sir, you need to get back," the officer demanded. "This is a closed off scene, please-"
"My wife is in there!" Eddie shouted loudly in the officer's face. "Don't touch me!" Then he turned back to the building. Flames were pouring out of his window. "Venom, we have to go in there."
I KNOW. LET'S GO, EDDIE.
"Let's go," Eddie repeated, and stepped forward as he felt the tendrils of black go up the veins of his neck-
"Eddie!"
Eddie turned, and he saw you pushing an EMT off of you. You were running towards him, and Eddie panicked because you weren't supposed to run when you were this pregnant, but he also was so relieved that he didn't really care. The black traveled back down his neck and he sprinted across the parking lot to you.
"___!" he shouted. "___, are you hurt?" He got you and started looking over your body. You seemed fine.
Your hands went to his chest. "Eddie, were you going to go in there?"
"Yes, I was going to go in there!" He was still loud. "Are you kidding me? I thought you were trapped in there!"
"But - Venom can't-"
"He knew that," he said. "We both knew what we were doing." His shaking hands went to your face and his voice fell to a gentle whisper. "Jeez, ___, I was so scared... I thought I was going to lose you - and the baby-"
You were crying silent tears. They hurt his heart so badly. You put your arms around him and he put his around yours. The hold was awkward because of your belly, but he still just wanted - needed - to hold you. Because now you were safe, and he was able to breathe again.
He sighed, a pained expression on his face as he held you. He leaned down and kissed your hair, which smelled like fire.
"It's alright now," he said. "I got you. I'm here now."
And you both just stood there, his hand moving to the side of your head. He shut his eyes tight and you listened to his heartbeat that was against your ear, and he worked on breathing as a chorus of sirens filled the air behind him.
