As the sun rises, the ship is anchored out at sea. Chris and his friends and family, minus Sonic, are celebrating New Year's Day.

"Just a few minutes to go." Chuck informed.

"This is the perfect way to start the new year!" Amy exclaimed.

"This is going to be fun!" Y/N agreed.

"Yeah, much better than celebrating at midnight." Chris said.

"Celebrating the first sunrise of the new year - great idea, Mr. Tanaka."

Ella gently elbows Tanaka.

"Thank you." he said.

"Get ready, guys. As soon as the sun comes up, we use our noisemakers."

Chris removes a party popper from a box he is holding. Everyone gathers round Chris to take party poppers except Cream and Cheese.

"Hold on, Chris! I think we should just wait for the sun instead because if we make too much noise, we might scare the sun away!"

"Chaaao!"

"The sun isn't gonna get scared away, Cream." Chris assured.

"Don't you worry one bit, dear. The sun will be happy to get such a nice welcome!" Vanilla smiled at her daughter.

"Okay then. I'll take one."

Cream heads over to Chris and claims a party popper for herself. Y/N leans down to her level.

"It'll be fun. Trust me."

Cream nodded with a smile.

"Sonic needs one too."

Chris looks around.

"Huh?"

But Sonic is nowhere to be found. Tails motions to the sky.

"Try that way."

There, sitting at the top of the ship, is the blue hedgehog himself. Obviously something is bugging him. Y/N wondered if he's doing okay. Tanaka holds up his own party popper.

"Okay, let's get ready!"

Everyone holds up their party poppers.

"You will pull the strings all together. I will give you a signal as soon as the sun comes over the horizon. A few seconds more... The sky is getting lighter... lighter... It's almost here..."

The sun begins to rise.

"Get ready... Go!"

Suddenly, in space, the moon moves in front of the sun, creating an unprecedented solar eclipse as the sky darkens. Everyone sweatdrops.

"No way!"

"That doesn't look like the sun."

"Chao-chao chao chao!"

"What's happening?" Y/N asked in shock.

Sonic sits up. Cream and Cheese are crying.

"I told you we shouldn't make all that noise! The sun did get scared and now it's hiding!"

"Please don't cry, Cream dear. I'm sure the sun will come back soon. This eclipse surely won't last long." Vanilla reassured her.

Sonic watches the eclipse with a grim expression. Y/N glares in suspiciousness that it's Eggman's doing and wonders what he's up to now.

In the White House, Eggman is hosting a press conference with three other men.

"We want answers!"

"How long will it take you to correct the Egg Moon's orbit and end the eclipse?"

"I have bad news for you. The damage to the Egg Moon will be difficult to repair. For the moment, it will be impossible to move the Egg Moon." Eggman spoke.

"Are you telling us this eclipse will continue indefinitely?"

Eggman twiddles his fingers.

"I'm sure I'll come up with a solution eventually, but I'm afraid it's going to take time. I'll have to write new software and run tests. Were I to act in haste, the consequences could be catastrophic."

"But without sunshine, the planet will freeze!" Journalist exclaimed.

Eggman stands up.

"I won't let it freeze! I can provide you with plenty of heat and light because I've invented an artificial form of sunshine!"

"Artificial sunshine?" Journalist questioned.

"Just you wait and see. This is my brightest idea ever." Eggman smirks.

In Chuck's lab, Chris and his family and friends are watching the news. Scarlet Garcia is reporting the evening news.

"For several days now, the endless eclipse has blocked all sunlight from reaching our planet. But thanks to the work of Dr. Eggman, our world will soon be bathed in a new form of light."

She is handed a paper.

"And now a brief message from our sponsor."

The TV cuts to a commercial, which shows the words 'Eggman TV Shopping'.

"Are you feeling bad because it's always night? Eggman TV Shopping helps you see the light!" Decoe and Bocoe chirped out.

The commercial then shows Eggman, Bocoe, and Decoe in a sunny environment.

"Living in the dark is not only depressing and a public safety hazard, but is bad for your lawn too! The solution..."

Eggman leaves the screen, and Bocoe and Decoe pull the cover off of an object, revealing a spherical object on a pole.

"Ta-daa!"

Eggman returns to the screen.

"It's the Sunshine Ball! Thanks to my new invention, even the dingiest darkness can now be filled with luschious luminosity."

Chris appears surprised, but Sonic and Y/N impassively looks on. As she was listening, she looks down at the golden limiter on her wrist, fiddling with it.

"If you call within the next twenty minutes, you can take advantage of our special offer. New customers are eligible for free delivery, and installation is half-price." Bocoe added.

"I wish I could offer installation for free also, but the robot union won't let me." Eggman bows. "Sorry about that."

Decoe and Bocoe wave.

"Hey! We robots have to pay for oil, you know!"

"Call to order your Sunshine Ball today."

"Our operators are standing by."

"You better call soon."

"The Sunshine Ball is selling out."

"What'll we do?" Chris asked, looking at them.

"Well, I miss the sun." Chuck admitted.

"I ironed out the laundry days ago, and it still isn't dry. A Sunshine Ball will sure be handy." Ella spoke.

Tanaka nods.

"I agree."

"We should call for one right away." Chuck suggested.

Sonic and Y/N gets up and starts to leave the lab.

"Hey, Sonic... Y/N..." Chris called out.

But Sonic and Y/N leaves without saying a word.

"Sonic and Y/N aren't sure if this is a good idea. I don't think they trust Dr. Eggman very much. Well, Y/N clearly doesn't trust at all, not even once or twice." Tails said, looking to where the hedgehog siblings had gone.

"If we don't trust Dr. Eggman, we may have to live in the dark forever." Amy added.

"Maybe so, but how do we know Eggman is telling us the truth?" Chris asked.

"He sounds like he's sincere to me." Amy said, seeming convinced.

"Who else would he make Sunshine Balls?" Tails asked.

"I guess you're right..."

Chris looks up to the screen, where he sees Eggman, Decoe, and Bocoe swamped with callers.

"Yes sir, your Sunshine Ball will be delivered to you right away. Tired of the dark? Then let the Sunshine Ball light up your day!"

Meanwhile, Sonic and Y/N are running and rocket roller skating through a field, clearly determined to do something.

"Is it alright to leave our friends alone? You know they'll fall for Eggman's tricks." she asked.

"It's for the best, sis."

"Alright, I guess..."

Outside Helen's house, Decoe and Bocoe are installing a Sunshine Ball on top of the house. They soon finish screwing the device into place.

"Steady now..."

"It is wobbly."

"We have to attach it to the base."

"Roger."

"Turn it clockwise... Keep going... A few more turns and we will be done."

"This certainly is hard work."

"We should ask for a raise. ... Your Sunshine Ball is all set!"

"We are ready to test it out now."

The Sunshine Ball begins to glow brightly, bathing the area in a day-like warmth and glow, aweing Helen and her parents.

"It feels so warm. And best of all, the light is almost as bright as real sunshine." Helen smiled.

Meanwhile, Knuckles watches from a nearby cliff.

"It seems like Eggman is trying to help everybody. Can he really be trusted? I guess we don't have a choice? But Y/N..."

 In Eggman's new base, built into the side of a mountain, Bokkun is answering several phones at once.

"Hello? ... Please hold! ... Yes? ... One moment... We're a little backed up right now! We'll get there as soon as we can! Thanks for calling!"

He drops the phones.

"Hey! Dr. Eggman!"

"Consumer demand is greater than I expected. We'll need another mirror tower to produce more artificial sunshine." Eggman smiled.

"Maybe the President can help us out!" Bokkun suggested.

Eggman dials the President's number.

"Yes? This is the President speaking."

"It's Dr. Eggman calling, Mr. President. Can the government get me some free land to build another Mirror Tower? With all the demand for Sunshine Balls, our business is blazing!"

"Of course, Doctor! Whatever you need."

"All I can say is 'Hail to the Chief!'"

He laughs.

Meanwhile, it is  revealed that several more Mirror Towers have been built around the vicinity of the first one. Sonic and Y/N watches them.

"You may have everybody else fooled, Eggman, but not us. You say you've built these towers to make sunshine, but you're keping everybody in the dark about your real plan. But we know what you're up to."

Sonic runs toward one of the Mirror Towers, then executes a spin-dash, destroying it. Y/N brought out her giant fist whip, spun it, skating towards another one of the Mirror Towers and swung it, smashing it as the fist punched it into pieces.

All over Station Square, Sunshine Balls turn off, plunging the city into darkness once again. Knuckles is in the city when this happens.

"What's wrong?" he questioned.

Outside the Thorndyke Mansion, Ella had been hanging her laundry.

"Without those Sunshine Balls, we're all washed up!"

In Chuck's lab, Chris, Chuck, Amy, Tails, Cream, and Cheese are watching the latest report.

"I'm coming to you live from Eggman's emergency press conference. The doctor has prepared a statement on the blackout."

Eggman is being publicly interviewed.

"Today two Mirror Towers collapsed, which overloaded the power grid and caused the system to shut down. We are doing everything we can to repair the damage quickly, and we hope to turn the lights back on in a few more hours."

"Do you know why Mirror Towers collapsed?" Scarlet asked, raising her mic towards him.

"We are investigating now."

"Sonic... Y/N..." Chris softly said.

"What did you say?" Tails looks over at Chris.

"Oh, it was nothing... Nothing much..."

Chris looks back at the TV, thinking.

"They'd never do something like that... would they?"

In the White House

"I don't believe it!"

The President, Christina, Topaz, Rouge, and a few aides are watching footage of Sonic's and Y/N's rampage.

"Are you sure that this isn't a mistake?" President asked.

"We're positive, sir. I'll zoom in for a close-up." Aide said.

He zooms in to Sonic and Y/N.

"It is Sonic and Y/N. How could they?!"

"Sonic can be wild sometimes, but committing sabotage isn't in his character." Christina glared. "I never expect Y/N to pick his side and become a rebellion."

"But Sonic can't stand Dr. Eggman. I'd bet my wings that he knocked down that Mirror Tower out of jealousy." Rouge spoke. "As for Y/N, I'm not sure. I remember correctly that she clearly distrust Eggman and doesn't like him very much."

Topaz turned to her.

"What are you talking about?"

"We have all the proof that we need right on that video. Eggman is trying to help us, but Sonic and Y/N still think of him as the enemy. They resent that we're working with Eggman."

"That's ridiculous!"

"You're suggesting Sonic and Y/N caused a worldwide blackout because Eggman's on our side now?" President asked.

Rouge shrugs.

"Who knows."

"We should release the tape now, sir. The public must be informed that Sonic and Y/N are danger!" Christina said.

The President buries his face in his hands. The President's Third Aide takes a phone call.

"Hello, this is the President's office..." he looks shocked. "Sir, we have an emergency! We just lost two more Mirror Tower!"

"We have to do something!"

"Do you want me to inform the media, sir?" Christina asked.

"Yes. Give them the tape." President closed his eyes, thinking if he did the right thing.

And so the video is shown to the public.

"There's been a late-breaking development in the Mirror Tower case. A video tape just released by the government shows the towers being destroyed by the two hedgehogs, Sonic and Y/N!"

Back to Chuck's lab

"What? No way!"

Chris stands up.

"Sonic and Y/N don't do things like that! It has to be a mistake!" Cream said, not believing it.

"Yeah, I'd bet ya that video is a fake." Tails nodded.

Tanaka appears in the entrance.

"An unruly mob is gathering outside the mansion!"

"Wonderful." Chuck sarcastically said.

Outside the mansion, Jerome Wise and the protesters are gathered outside the gates. Unlike before, they are violent.

"We want Sonic and Y/N! We want Sonic and Y/N! We want Sonic and Y/N! We want Sonic and Y/N!"

Chris and the others have gathered just outside their door to watch.

"What'll we do? It sounds like they're really angry with Sonic and Y/N. What made them do something so crazy?"

"Sonic got pretty upset when he saw Eggman on TV. Y/N had a look of distrust, not believing that Eggman is helping us and had some suspicions." Tails said.

"So you think they did it just because they didn't want Dr. Eggman to be a hero? That's an awful thing to say!" Amy snapped, leaning towards Tails.

"But what other explanation could there be?" Tails raised his hands in surrender, leaning back.

"I'm sure they had a good reason." Chris said.

"Then why didn't they tell anybody?"

"They're breaking through!" Ella said.

The protesters are already climbing the gates. Amy races toward them, hammer drawn.

"Don't worry! Nobody's gonna get past me!"

"Come back! You're only gonna make the situation worse if they see you're attacking!" Chuck advised her.

Amy stops.

"What else can we do?"

Chuck races toward the protesters.

"Let me try to resolve this peacefully!"

"Grandpa!"

 Chris starts after Chuck. With one mighty push, the protesters break the gate down and storm toward the mansion.

"Get Sonic and Y/N now!"

"Can't we talk about this?!"

Chuck and Amy are caught up in the stampede. Tanaka races toward them.

"Leave them alone or you will face me!"

But he too is trampled.

"Calm down, everybody!" Chris shouted.

The police are set up around the Mirror Towers as Sonic and Y/N runs and roller skates toward one of them.

"Sonic and Y/N are charging the towers! What are we supposed to do, pull them over for speeding?" Police Officer said into the radio.

"Do whatever it takes to stop them." Another Police Officer replied over the radio.

"But how? Sonic and Y/N are too fast for us!"

Sonic and Y/N leaps clear over the officers and destroys two Mirror Towers anyway, covering the officers in ashes.

"Uh... My kids all look up to Sonic and Y/N. How in the world am I gonna explain to them that they're bad guys now?"
