Chapter twenty seven: The World's A Stage.
"Today marks a week since the battle of the once believed abandoned, Christmas Island. With Sonic the Hedgehog, painted as an enemy to Mobius, and his friends quickly on sight to stop one of Eggman's plans yet again. In a twist of events, it seems Sonic was set up by the Doctor, which yes, means he truly isn't a danger to us or our planet- along with his friends. From collected evidence and reports, sourced from the Chaotix, Eggman had been the one behind recent missing person cases. Unfortunately, someone like myself, was manipulated and tricked just like many of you and was blind to who the true enemy is. I apologise for the false information I've given, for I, Breezie Hedgehog swear to speak on events across Mobius in the most truthful way. I can assure you this mistake won't happen again- even receiving assurance from Sonic and his friends alike. Of course, there's still many questions left- which are in need of answers- and I am fortunate enough to catch the Fastest Thing Alive for some."
First action of business? Clean up. Luckily, G.U.N took charge of the greatest majority- assisted by Amy, Cream, Cheese, Mighty and Ray. Although nothing concrete, the small traces they found led them to conclude the Doctor had...disposed of his 'failed creations' after experimentation. Eggman's base on Christmas Island was taken care of rather swiftly, leaving the mess that spread across Mobius like a plague.
Hence, the second action of business. Interviews. Sonic had always hated the politics side to his life (largely believing there shouldn't even be one), but without Sally Acorn to take care of it- he was left to clean up his own messes. According to Rouge, the world needed to see him anyway- witness him easing their troubles and worries. Giving assurances they can be trusted again and most importantly, seize the endless fighting between humans and mobians.
Thus, he agreed to Breezie's interview. She'd done a brilliant job, he could admit, in undoing the consequences for her actions. Expectantly, she relied on the worlds hatred for Eggman (although he felt a tiny bit bad for the Doctor) to paint herself as innocent.
Sonic fidgeted in the news channels guests chair, smoothing a hand over new bandages across his quills. "Nah, thanks for having me on, Breezie."
"Let's get right to it, shall we? This all began when you refused to inform G.U.N of Badnik sightings across Mobius. Then, in Spagonia, Eggman was free to go. Can you explain what happened there?"
"Well, to put it simply, I thought I could handle it. Didn't see the point in makin' a panic. They were erratic and confused- so I just assumed they were rogue Badniks. But I can assure everyone that it wasn't out of some selfish desire for action or somethin'. Even I'm not that dumb. And Spagonia? That's on me- I was thrown off and Eggman took advantage of it-."
"There were rumours your friend, Tails, attacked him. Is that right? Did Tails distract-?"
Sonic's eyes narrowed and he clenched a fist. "My brother didn't do anything wrong. He's my right hand and I trust him even more than myself. He's proven himself time and time again, too. He judged the situation and that was the conclusion he made. There's not much else to it."
"Very well. Can you discuss Eggman's course of events in more detail? So much is still foggy."
"Sure, I guess. He's been focusin' on building a place for himself- annoyingly he picked Christmas Island. And he was-."
For some weird reason, Sonic didn't feel like blasting Eggman's illness to the world. What, had he some sort of sympathy for the oaf or something? Why should he care? It's not like Eggman respected his privacy.
"Er, he was kidnappin' poor folks. We...we didn't catch on quick enough-."
"An ironic term, don't you think?"
Sonic stiffened. "Breezie I-...from the bottom of my heart I'm so sorry for not saving them. I know I should've been quicker, but, and I'm not tryin' to make an excuse, but I was ran out from Mobius. It's kinda hard to protect the world when it's biggest military force is against ya."
"Very well. What actions have been put against G.U.N? Specifically, Abraham Towers?"
Ah, the third action of business. The following day after Christmas Island, they had all met at Station Square's G.U.N building to discuss such a problem. According to Vector, Breezie suggested a change of Commander- which was obvious. What to do with him and who his replacement would be was harder to decide.
Until Shadow spoke.
"I have many questions I need answered- and he's going to give them to me. I can't find it in myself to arrest him either. He endangered the world further- but without full knowledge on what was going on. He was manipulated just as much as...well...just as much as I was. With this logic, you should all imprison me and throw away the key, too. Besides, I caused much more harm to Mobius than he did."
Rouge's ears dipped. "Hun-."
"I appreciate your graciousness." Towers, sat on his office chair, thanked.
Shadow glared and stepped to squeeze his shoulder- far too tightly. "This isn't for you. And do not think you have gotten away with your crimes. You will disappear- you hear me? Like you never existed. Live a life of solitary until you inevitably die alone."
"Anyone disagree?" Omega asked.
The group were very quick to shake their heads and oblige with the decision. After all, Shadow definitely needed this.
Which brought them to their next issue- Abraham's replacement.
"Why don't you take the job, Shadow? You have the experience." Amy suggested.
"Forgiving G.U.N for what they took from me and taking it over are very different things. But I appreciate you thought of me. I do have a better idea, though."
"Oh yeah?" Tails urged.
"She's sneaky and merciless in her desire for shiny things. However, I trust her more than I trust myself. She is my best friend and...she's my family. She's proven to be resourceful, clever and pretty much untouchable in sticky situations. She cares more about this planet than I think she'll ever let on- but it makes her a perfect leader. After all, she's miraculously managed with Omega and myself."
The one in question paled. "Oh no, you aren't-."
Shadow tore off Towers' Commander badge and handed it to Rouge, even with a smile. "I am. Even if the world has been unfair to you- you've dedicated your life to protecting it anyway. You're the only one I'd trust in this position."
Amy squealed. "Oh it's perfect! Rouge, you have to take it!"
Knuckles gave the bat a surprisingly gentle nudge. "I've always said you could learn what it's like to have some responsibility."
"Oh har har, Knuckie."
"I'd much prefer workin' with Gun if you were in charge." Sonic shrugged.
"But I...I can't accept this."
"But Miss Rouge-!" Cream started, beside her Mother and hugging Cheese.
"Why?" Vector, with his team and Mighty and Ray, asked.
Rouge carefully held the badge and stuck out her tongue. "This thing's disgusting! I can't be seen wearing something like this!"
So, returning to the second act of business, Sonic refocused on the question at hand.
"We decided Rouge would be best to replace Towers. Abraham himself won't be seen for a very long time- so no one needs to worry about him anymore."
"With Rouge in charge, will you be working a lot more closely with G.U.N?"
"If they line up with what I wanna do, sure." He winked.
"And, if I may, what is that exactly?"
Sonic turned to face the cameras, where their angles zoned in on him.
"Doing what I do best. I'll continue to keep Mobius safe- no matter what's thrown at me. I'll make sure Eggman can't hurt anymore people- humans and mobians alike. We gotta remember to stick together. We already have bad guys and folks who endanger our home- last thing we gotta do is fight with each other. It gets tough, scary, and you start to wonder who you can trust- but it's better to put that trust in the wrong person than in no one at all. And I ask, humbly, that you keep your trust in me. Don't lose faith. Not in me, my friends, each other and especially yourself. We only have one chance at life- don't waste it by fighting with each other. So, yeah, no matter what comes yours or my way- I'm gonna keep moving forward."
After all, he was Sonic the Hedgehog. And he refused to let himself be the catalyst for his and Mobius' downfall.
In the end, it's not really up to him.
