Chapter 14: The Start of a Long Night
Percy's POV:
We all know. The Battle of Manhattan was starting tonight. None of us know how long it will last. But we know it's time. Olympus is at its most vulnerable point. Only 75 demigods, a bunch of nature spirits, 30 hunters, two river gods, the wind spirits, a cyclops, and a bunch of old automatons stand in the way of reaching Olympus.
Opposed to us is the Titan Lord and his army, of many more than us, made of various monsters and hundreds of demigods.
Katie and the others that were sent to block off the tunnels have returned successfully, though Katie and her siblings were tired from the heavy usage of their powers in unnatural ways.
It was decided that the Demeter cabin would be the last cabin to deploy to the bridges.
"Only a few minutes till sunset and the boats are about to reach us," Annabeth reported.
"Don't worry about boats. East and Hudson are our friends," Tyson stated happily.
"I'm sure they are big guy," I responded. "You ready for some surface-level combat."
Tyson nodded.
"Good. You'll be deployed with the Hephaestus cabin. Beckendorf asked for you."
"Beckendorf, good friend," Tysons proclaimed. "I'll go with him gladly."
Just as the boats were reaching the point where the Hudson and East rivers meet, they just disappeared. Not like vanish disappear, I mean they were swallowed by the rivers disappear.
I don't know how the Titan Lord was taking this news. But I imagine it as something akin to Zeus having his master bolt stolen. Or Hera finding out Zeus cheated again.
Looking at their movements, it only took them 30 minutes to reorganize and start marching.
"Ares cabin Brooklyn Bridge" Annabeth stated as there was a considerable portion of the Titan Army was making its way across Staten Island. "Hephaestus cabin, Manhattan Bridge."
Beckendorf and Clarisse quickly gathered their siblings and headed off."
"Aphrodite Cabin, Queensboro," I said. I don't think my sisters could have been more excited to be deployed.
"Apollo cabin to Williamsburg," I ordered
The Apollo cabin went off without complaint, except for Michael, who was grumbling still.
"Yo, Perce. It looks like they are moving north," The Stolls said
"Malcolm, Stolls cover RFK bridge across 125th. There are too many bridges up there to cover, so hold a line," Annabeth commanded. "Also, be careful of the Automatons."
"Bro, we have another problem. Lincoln tunnel is being attacked," Zoë stated as numerous hunting flares shot up.
"Demeter, Dionysius, and hunters to the Lincoln tunnel. That's the most direct root, but it's a heavy distraction. Kronos won't show there," I stated. I believe that's one of the things in the art of war—something about knowing your enemy.
With that, the last of the cabins went off.
"Where do you all want me," Peter asked nonchalantly.
"Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges," Thalia said. "The two are close enough to go each other that you'll be able to help defend both"
Peter rolled his eyes but left.
"Thalia, head to the northern line," Annabeth instructed, "they need help."
Thalia nodded and ran off to assist the northern line.
I watched the battle play out through the video shield and noticed we were weakest at Williamsburg compared to the forces deployed.
"Apollo cabin needs help desperately," I pointed out, "Kronos is moving many forces to that point."
"He's attacking where we'll be weakest," Annabeth said. "They only have so many arrows."
I nodded in agreement as we headed off to help my uncle's children.
When we got there, the bridge was a mess. Cracks were everywhere, and the bridge was barely holding together.
Well, I should make gramps proud by making a spectacular entrance. I flew up above the bridge and to where the Apollo cabin was holding the monster army back with arrows. Then, I summoned a lightning strike hitting the bridge, sending the monsters flying back from the force, and landed where I struck the bridge with lightning.
"No need to show off," Annabeth shouted as she ran up the bridge.
I shrugged my shoulders. "gramps isn't here, so someone has to put on a show," I stated, only to hear thunder across the sky, and it wasn't Thalia or me.
"MOOOOOOOOOOOO" I heard a cow bellow loudly.
Wait a minute. Cows aren't in the city. I looked across the enemy line and caught sight of the Minotaur. "Oh. I'm sorry, did my spectacular entrance vaporize a few of your friends"
Demigods on both sides tried to hide their laughter, even Annabeth.
"MOOOOOOO"
"I accept your challenge to solo combat," I replied, figuring it was something like that, but I don't speak Minotaur. It's an entirely different language than cow.
"Moo?"
I changed from my swords to the Minotaur horn spear I made with Zoë. Because the image of the Minotaur dying from its own horn is too ironic not to do. It would be a tragedy for the millennium, at least for the Minotaur.
The Minotaur's response made me think that wasn't what he was saying. However, the other monsters seemed to be taking my side as they formed a half circle around the Minotaur, as the Apollo cabin and Annabeth formed a half circle behind me.
Given the actions of both armies, he couldn't back away from the fight. Less he wants to prove himself cowardly, which no monster would do in front of other monsters.
The Minotaur weighed his options and charged. A dumb move if you ask me.
I met the Minotaur's charge with a charge of my own.
When we closed the distance to half what it was, the Minotaur raised his axe for a strike. The blade was an omega shape on both sides. I want it. Despite not using a heavy weapon like that before, it couldn't hurt right.
When the distance closed enough, the Minotaur started to bring down his axe in a downward chop. I, however, started sliding, which caught the Minotaur off guard. I thrust my spear up and under the rib cage of the Minotaur as I completed my slide.
I don't recommend sliding on road surfaces because it did hurt a lot. But as I finished my slide, the Minotaur burst into golden dust, and the Axe head buried itself in the road surface mere inches from my head.
The monsters were in shock, but I still felt like I was in imminent danger. Oh. Yeah. Annabeth just watched me do something arguably stupid and nearly die from it. I'm praying to Chaos that I will not be forced to head to school this fall by Annabeth.
I quickly got up and charged the enemy lines, leading a counterattack against them.
As we fought to the other end of the bridge, we nearly successfully pushed them back off it. Annabeth got close to me, during the fighting. Oh please, Chaos, may she be merciful to me.
"You could have died doing that"
"But I didn't."
"It was stupid."
"Possibly, but it worked"
"Ugh, if we live, we're gonna have a serious talk about your education," she said.
Oh no. She's going to force me to go to school. Chaos, why dost thou forsaken me?
Of course, this didn't last long. The enemy started retreating from the bridge. But they weren't running away from us. They were running to...oh gods. I didn't expect him to do this.
The Titan Lord has entered the battle.
"Bravo bravo," He started, "your courage is admiral, but you all shall now fail," he finished with a harsh glare.
Hey, horses, do you mind throwing your riders? It would be funny. I mentally ask the horses.
The horses started looking at each other. Please work, I prayed.
The horse decided I was right and threw their riders, including Kronos, only to run past our enemy, heading away from us and back to the wild.
"THOSE WRETCHED HORSES," Kronos bellowed, "WE SHALL KILL THEM ALL LATER. FOR NOW, WHICH ONE OF YOU TOLD THEM TO DO THAT"
"uh, I'm pretty sure the horses just got tired of carrying your fat self," I clapped back in defense of the horses. I may dislike Poseidon, but that doesn't mean I dislike horses.
"YOU BOY" Kronos shouted, "YOU DARE DEFY ME."
I started cleaning my ears, "Sorry, were you speaking? I couldn't hear you over the minotaur dung that came from your mouth."
"WHO IS THIS IMPERTINENT CHILD" Kronos asked his own lines
"That's Artemis's son, Lord Kronos," one of his lackeys informed him.
"I would have thought she would not raise such impertinence."
"Well, you have to be deserving of respect, which you are not, for me to be impertinent."
"Percy, will you please not make him want to kill you more than he already does" Annabeth whispered to me.
"CHARGE," Kronos ordered.
"Apollo cabin, retreat. Hold the other side of the bridge at all cost," Annabeth ordered, to which many of the Apollo cabin performed a fighting retreat to the Manhattan side of the bridge.
Annabeth and I, however, were fighting and slowly getting pushed back. "Annabeth, you need to make a break for it. The bridge is lost," I said.
"I'm not leaving you," she said as Kronos slowed the assault.
I went to attack him. Though I'm nearly certain he wouldn't die today, I would still be able to take out some of his guards. Strangely enough, Kronos wasn't pressing to get by us. Though I know this is the primary assault to get into Manhattan, it seems like he's not pushing the advantage. Also, he was at the front of his lines.
I was able to fight the few guards off that rose to challenge, which left Kronos open for a strike. I quickly struck at his legs and was able to also nail both of his heels, but they were deflected.
"Puny demigod. You think you can harm me, the Titan Lord," Kronos boasted.
"Well, I know you bleed. I just have to find out from where."
"You seriously went for Achilles' weak spot first."
"Better to rule out the obvious first," I stated and moved along, attacking more of the Titan's lower body, even trying to castrate him. None of that worked, which provided valuable information.
"You and your little girlfriend are surrounded now," Kronos boasted. I looked around and took notice that we were indeed surrounded, but his troops weren't moving to enter Manhattan.
"Is my death that important now?" I asked, raising my hands in fake surrender and backing up to Annabeth.
"Yes, you've insulted me in front of my troops."
"Why do I love you" Annabeth whispered.
"Hey, at least he doesn't care about Olympus right now," I whispered back.
"Kill him," Kronos ordered, and his goons started coming in one by one. Monsters began to attack, but they eventually thinned out, and a few demigods started coming. I knocked them out, however, as, at the end of the day, they are just misguided and don't deserve to be used as sheep for the slaughter.
It was going on like this until I heard a gasp of pain behind me, and I knew it was Annabeth. She was stabbed in the left arm with a knife that I could smell poison on. The good news is that the other demigods stopped, and the poison is easily curable. She should be fine if it doesn't reach her heart.
I moved to a defensive position over Annabeth and saw Michael up on one of the suspension lines. "Blow the bridge Percy" he shouted as he fired the last arrow from his quiver, striking down one of the few monsters remaining and sending a few others off, grabbing at their ears from the sonic arrow.
His words, however, sent most of the remaining awake demigods and monsters running off the bridge, as they knew what happened to the Andromeda, by my guess.
I took a quick look down at Annabeth and knew Michale was right. And I would have to teleport Annabeth out of here.
I brought my spear down, striking the bridge and causing an earthquake to emanate from the spear.
Before I knew it, the bridge was crumbling, and I was tumbling down to the water below with Annabeth. I grabbed onto her and focused as hard as possible on getting to the Manhattan side of the bridge I had just destroyed.
I felt myself dissolve, along with Annabeth, just not into flames but into water.
I focused on the Manhattan side of the bridge, knowing that's how teleporting worked.
I felt a sudden rush of wind go by and was suddenly materialized on the Manhattan side of the bridge, with Annabeth laying on the ground next to me. I could barely focus, but I knew we both had everything still in the right place. "WILL" I yelled out for the blonde doctor cousin of mine.
Instantly Will was by my side. "What is it you need," he asked.
"Annabeth. "I said, breathing heavily and fighting off sleep. "Tourniquet... left arm... poisoned ... get Thalia...and Zoë to move us," I finished, almost losing consciousness, as I was just catching the sun rising.
"Alright, Perce," Will said, taking a rope or belt from one of his siblings as my vision began going blurry and dark.
"YOU DID WELL FOR TONIGHT, DEMIGODS," I heard Kronos bellow, "WE SHALL SEE IF YOUR LUCK CONTINUES TONIGHT."
"why is he..." I heard, but that was all my consciousness could take as my brain went to rest.
