NOT EDITED!
~LILY~
First day of test and I wasn't prepared.
Instead of spending the whole independent day to read, I was busy speaking with my parents through Skype, so I wasn't able to open any of my books throughout the day even when I had promised myself to wake up during the midnight to read, I didn't.
The whole class were busy with their books and I wasn't left out. I flipped through my biology notebook trying to cram something's into my brain but nothing was sticking, and that made me close the book in annoyance - wondering why it was compulsory for commercial students in TAHS to do biology when it wasn't necessary. I mean how does biology relate with commercial?
They don't even have any connections, but my dear school dimmed it necessary for all students.
I opened my book again trying to at least get the definition of 'hormones' into my big head, but everything that was written down was like rubbish to me, with the big grammars written there, but I decided to give it a read again.
"A product of living cells that circulates in the body fluids (such as blood or sap) and produces a specific often stimulatory effect on the activity of the cell usually remote from it's point of origin."
That doesn't make any sense, right?
Finally, it was time for the first paper which was biology, I copied the questions from the board into my sheet of paper and the last question that I saw was the same topic I tried reading but didn't stick.
Hormones.
"You have forty minutes, No side talks, no cheating and no giraffing," Mr sultan the maths teacher was the invigilator. "Start."
I looked down at the questions that i'd written down earlier and I only knew one out of the whole six questions I was meant to answer, so I decided to do the one I knew first. After I answered the only question I knew, I bit the head of my pen trying to think for answers to the remaining questions, but the answers weren't coming.
The heel to Mr sultan shoe could be heard as he walked around the class invigilating. I looked up and saw virtually everybody writing, Faree looked really concentrated as she just kept on writing, pink was writing also but I could see Rayo tugging the end of her blazer and for some reasons that brought a smile to my face. Chase wasn't writing as he kept on looking at his paper hitting his pen gently on his desk. He looked cool and normal, unlike when I saw him on Monday - When he looked off. I took my gaze down to his wrist but I couldn't see if it was still bandaged because the sleeves of his shirt were rolled down.
"Thirty minutes left," instantly I looked down at my answer sheet and I still had five unanswered questions. "I'm leaving the class now and I don't want to hear any noise, do you understand?" no one answered him. "I've gone." And he left the class and I knew the class would soon break into side murmurs in; 5!
4!
3!
2!
1!
"My heartbeat, please number one?" that was Nola shaking Faree arm for answers.
"Please who has done number six?"
"No joor, please what is hormones?" another person asked.
"I hate biology!" someone complained from the front while I just smiled. I looked over at Chase and saw that he wasn't still writing and he kept hitting his pen on his desk.
Maybe he doesn't know what to write; I thought to myself as I watched him. Then he looked up and turned to me, and for the first time ever I didn't look away, I smiled at him instead and he returned the smile, also I think I saw a dimple at his left cheek but I was not exactly sure.
"Are you done?" he asked and I shook my head.
"Are you?" I asked and he nodded his head. I was shocked and thought maybe he didn't hear my question well because he couldn't have finished so quickly, we had not even used fifteen minutes out of the time allocated to us so I decided to ask again. "I said are you done with the test?"
"I am," was his reply and I turned to my desk and looked at my almost empty paper. "Do you have any problem?"
I looked at him. "Me?"
"Yes, which one do you have problem with?" he asked and I looked at the door of the class to check if Mr sultan wasn't hiding there or peeping at us, but I didn't see any signs of him.
I took my paper from my desk and showed it to him, he smiled as he looked at the paper while my cheeks heated up in embarrassment.
"Start with number six," i nodded and kept my paper down on my desk as he gave me the definition of hormones, the definition he gave me was didn't look like what I read from my book even though I couldn't remember the proper definition in my book, I knew that it wasn't the same so I looked at him Wondering the type of definition he gave. "It's correct, I just gave you a different definition. I also wrote a different definition so it wouldn't look like we wrote the same," he said before I could even question him and I nodded deciding to believe him. "you've done number two?"
"Yes." I answered.
"Number three; types of liver diseases and kidney diseases, for liver diseases write hepatitis," I wrote it down. "jaundice," I wrote it down also. "Diabetes mellitus." I didn't write that down because I was confused, so I looked at him.
"Do you mean diabetes?"
He nodded. "Yeah but specifically diabetes mellitus," he said so I face my book and wrote down diabetes but I couldn't spell the second word.
"Sorry," I told him looking up slowly. "Please can you spell the other word?" I asked him feeling triple embarrassed so I didn't look at his face.
"M - e - l - l - i - t - u - s," he spelled it out and I wrote it down quickly, he also gave me the answers to the other questions, well except one. "How many remains?" he asked and I looked at the door surprised that Mr sultan wasn't back from where he went, yet.
"just. . .one."
"Leave that one then," he told me and I stared at him Wondering why. "The teacher might be suspicious if you get everything right that's why I suggested you leave one so. . ."I nodded now getting his point, and immediately I dropped my pen Mr sultan voice boomed through the class.
"I caught you ooo!" I looked up wondering who he was referring to. My heart beating fast because I was scared that he could had seen Chase spilling answers to me. I looked over at Chase sit and his face gave away no emotions, he didn't even look tense like I was. Mr sultan walked towards my row and my heart couldn't stop pounding, then he stopped. Right in front of k's desk and I calmed down a little. Although I still felt guilty because i cheated, well indirectly.
K, as we all called him didn't look up at Mr sultan, he bowed his head looking at his paper which was on his desk, then Mr sultan took his paper, walked away with it and he also took, Ade, Nola and grace - one of My classmate sitting at the front - papers and when he was about to take Faree's paper Nola spoke.
"She didn't talk." he said his voice coming out low.
"I didn't ask for your opinion, Brat." Mr sultan replied him.
"I am not a brat, also she wasn't talking," Nola continued to talk, and Mr sultan glared at him but Nola didn't look concerned as his head was on his desk. "Don't look at me like that . . . sir. She didn't talk."
"You know you're rude, and I promise to tell your biology teacher to remove twenty marks from your test," he said glaring at Nola but the guy in question didn't even react, his head still on his desk and I guessed that pissed Mr sultan more.
"OYO!" Someone shouted from the front, and some people chuckled at that, but Mr sultan was an angry bird at that moment.
"Who said that?" He asked but no one answered. I didn't even know who spoke, and even if I did I wasn't going to snitch. Mr sultan asked again and still no one replied and his face was a deeper shade of red. "Okay! No one wants to answer, abi? infact, all of you should submit."
Then he started moving around the class, taking our papers from our desk and no one objected and immediately he stormed out the class with the papers everyone started giggling and murmuring while I just smiled and looked at Chase who already had a book on his desk.
"Uhm, thank you," I told him and he smiled in response, then I brought out the next subject which came next, book keeping.
After ages, Mr sultan came into the class for the next paper with a odd facial expression on his face, the questions where dictated to us and he sat at the front of the class gawking at us like an hawk. At least, I was able to answer three out of the six questions set down, and I looked around and chase wasn't writing anymore but I knew he wouldn't be able to teach me because of Mr sultan eyes which were on us anyways I was wrong because he did.
Chase taught me book keeping, he taught me in the next test, English - which was the last paper for the day and I was scared as he taught me because the fear of Mr sultan catching us was high, nevertheless he didn't catch us. So let's just say luck was on my side.

"How was test today?"
"Fine." I answered Miss Claire as I walked into her office towards the seat opposite her.
"Do you want a drink?" i shook my head as I settled on the chair, laying my hands on her desk. "I'm not going to take much of your time today because I know your mid-term test has started, so we'll be doing a half session."
"Okay." I replied her.
"So how have you been feeling lately Chase?"
"Fine, I guess," I said.
"Fine, you guess?" she questioned. "That's the same as saying you ain't fine chase! so what's the problem?"
I didn't reply her, then instantly I removed my hands from her desk, dragging the sleeve of my shirt down, so the scar on my wrist won't be obvious to her. At least I was thankful that my dad didn't tell her about my suicide attempt, reasons he didn't tell her? I wasn't aware of. Well, about my suicide attempt, it was unsuccessful all because of Nanny Theresa whom came just in time to take me to the hospital.
"Don't worry this is a safe space. You can tell me anything." She said while I smiled at her usual line. "Speak Chase."
"I'm okay Miss Claire," I told her.
She nodded, "That's what they all say, anyways when last did you smoke?" she asked. "Please be honest with me Chase so I'll be able to help you."
"Yesterday. . .when I was. . .reading." I told her honestly.
"Seriously? Chase you smoke while you read? How do you even understand what you read?" she asked with concern laced in her voice.
"Honsetly Miss Claire, it helps me concentrate."
"Yeah, while you emaciate, kill your lung and your brain, right? You're brilliant Chase so you should know that, right?" she asked.
"You didn't add the fact that it keeps one from thinking, also."
She sighed. "Once the disadvantages are more than the advantages then it's totally wrong; that is smoking."
I listened to her words carefully, not saying a thing. "My nephew used to smoke before, I've told you before, right?" She asked.
"Leonardo?" I asked and she nodded. "You've told me about him on numerous occasions."
"He stopped smoking also . . .well, at least he's trying to, so can you Chase. I strongly believe that you can stop it chase and put your past behind you."
"What if my past is my present? What if the past keeps haunting me?" i asked.
"It's only your present because you allowed it to," she said. "Moving on, have you heard those words before? That's what you need to do. You need to move on from the past Chase."
I nodded my head. "Believe me Miss Claire, I'm trying, I'm really trying, but i can't deny the fact that the past is a part of me now"
"Sure chase, our past is a part of us but we don't let that determine and shape our future, instead, we learn from what went wrong in the past and try to fix our mistakes."
"You said we learn from what went wrong in the past, right?" she nodded to my question. ". . .but. . .what if lots of irreconcilable damages has been done? What if there's absolutely nothing to learn from my past because it has already shaped me into the human I am today? What if. . .what if. . ."
"No what if again Chase! Like I said Chase, the past is history just make new memories and soon everything would be alright, I promise," i hummed. "Also Remember no matter the situation good memories would always overcome the bad. So do you still have the nightmares?"
"Not really. . ." all thanks to my cigarettes and blade cutter.
"Well that's a good thing I believe,." she said smiling widely, picking up her phone from her desk at the same time. "So I saw a motivational word online, and I'm going to read it for you."
"Okay." I said and she started.
"Breathe. . . you're going to be okay, you've been here before. . . you've been this scared, uncomfortable and anxious and you survived. . . breathe and know that you can survive this too. . .I know it all feels unbearable right now, just breathe, keep breathing. . .this too shall pass, I promise."
She finished and dropped her phone on her desk while I tried to assimilate all she had read out for me. "So, Chase can you come over on Saturday?"
"Depends, is it important?"
"Just come."
