Chapter seven
If it's one thing I have learned in Atlo, it's that you can't keep some things secret for long. They just leak out. That's what happened when one day at school, Cat started behaving a little bit strangely. For instance, it was Art lesson and as I delicately painted a still life of an apple, Cat couldn't concentrate. She kept tapping her paintbrush on the desk and sighing happily. It was the same in all her lessons. She had something on her mind, I just couldn't work out what it might be. I tried asking her if there was anything bothering her but she just told me,
"Oh it's nothing really."
and at the next breaktime I saw her checking her mobile and doing that strange little happy sigh again.
After days of this going on, I asked her outright,
"Cat, what's on your mind? I know you're hiding something..."
Cat just laughed and told me there wasn't anything wrong. But I saw there was a soppy look in her eye. A soppy look in her eye... Then I knew what was going on. Cat had fallen in love with someone! But who had she fallen for? Not long afterwards, I found out who. It was dawn and I had just transformed. A week earlier, The Bird Girl had pushed me off the my mountain cliff when I had asked her how to fly. I had been terrified. But as I had fallen, I had flapped my wings in a certain way and from then on, I had learnt to fly. I was still learning and that night, I decided to fly near Cats Feliner wood and as I flew over the wood, I heard sounds I would not expect to hear in the same place. It sounded like wolf howls and Feliner yowls! Intrigued, I flew lower until I could see through the trees. Cat was there! I glided until I silently landed behind a bushy shrub, to watch what she was doing. As I watched, I saw Cat race around, purring happily. Another creature was chasing her excitedly, tail wagging. I soon recognised what the creature was. He was a Wolver!
"Why is Cat with a Wolver?" I thought confusedly. Hadn't Cat said that Wolvers were a Feliners enemy?
I was now pretty confused. I watched as Cat and the Wolver sat down on log and lovingly groomed each other, Cat purring, the Wolvers tail wagging. I decided I had seen enough and flew away, back to my mountain cliff.
The next day, I asked Cat at morning break,
''Cat, when I was flying at dawn today I saw you hanging out with someone. I have noticed you have been acting like your in love with someone... what I mean to ask is, have you fallen in love with a Wolver?"
Cat looked quite surprised at this and answered me,
"I didn't think I could keep it from you but I tried to nontheless because I thought you might be upset if I told you. I was worried you might think I would value my boyfriend above you."
"Continue." I prompted.
"Yes Layla, I have fallen in love with a Wolver." Cat finished her sentance as the bell rang for next lesson.
"We got to go to our lessons now, will tell you more after school." Cat told me, as she hurried off to her class.
When school was finally over, I found Cat and asked her,
"What else were you going to tell me?"
Cat told me to wait until we got somewhere quieter. We walked into a quiet park and sat down on a bench. Once we were in the park, Cat said to me,
"Layla, the reason why I have taken you to a quieter place is because my love of my Wolver boyfriend has to be kept secret. You know how a few weeks ago, I told you that a Wolver is an enemy of Feliner? Well, because of that, my pride has several laws which state what you can and can't do with Wolvers. You are allowed to chase Wolvers, attack them, annoy them. But one of the laws clearly states you are not allowed to fall in love with a Wolver. I could be thrown out of my pride if my pride knows about this!"
Now I could see that Cat was worried about this.
I told her,
"Forbidden love? If you can keep your transformative identity hidden from others, you can keep your love secret too. But also remember Cat, you know someone else who knows just what your going through."
Cat asked me,
"Who?"
I answered,
"Your Boyfriend, the Wolver. If your pride doesn't allow you to love him, theres a high chance his pack won't let him love their enemy - a Feliner. You are not alone."
Cat paused to think.
"Of course!" She said. She said to me, smiling, "Layla, what you have said is simple, but it is really helpfull. Thanks!"
"No problem." I replied, beaming. "I have got to go now though, Cat, so see you soon."
We both said goodbye to each other and left the park, heading back to our homes. I had had to go because I knew my foster parents would be worried as to why I was home late. Parents were a lot more protective of where their kids went in Atlo than in Srrin. Then a thought entered my head, were my foster parents Dean and Kate suspicious as to why I was going downstairs at night in a hurry? These days I had noticed they didn't really look like they believed me when I lied about where I had been when I transformed. This was not good.
