No5: Crossout
If high octane, creative fun is what you are after the Crossout is for you. I you wanted to play in Mad Max with the explosions and crazy contraptions tuned way up to eleven then you go to Crossout. Created by Gaijin, Crossout is a free to play post apocalypse arena vehicular combat game. In it you use various parts you can build from resources to build wild and wacky vehicles to drive into battle and use to blow up other players' creations.
From basic machine guns to explosives on a stick to even barrels of oil launched to bathe the world in fire every game of Crossout is a recipe for utter bedlam. It is not uncommon for the screen to be filled enough explosions and destruction to make hollywood jealous. The amount of freedom you have in designing your machine is frightening. Walking smiley face that spits rockets out? Sure! A tiny buggy with games' biggest gun on top? Why not?! Anything is possible and it all simultaneously makes for some of the most satisfying experiences ever.
When you win battles you collect resources then you use said resources to get parts which are then bolted together to make new machines. The game is fun and simple, You build machine, drive it and shoot enemy machines with it. The mostly online game even having a parts market for ingame currency so that pay-to-win is never an issue. On top of that, Crossout is one of the most well tuned up and most balanced games out there so you're suck fighting an up hill battle against unfair odds.
Now there is some nuance in all this. For one thing, a lot of damage and gunfire is physics based so while it adds to the mayhem it does make it hard to know for sure what a weapon will do. On one side, this adds to the insanity and fun, on the other, it does hamper one's ability to collect resources for more parts and sometimes it is a bit of a slow grind to get enough to make something new.
There are also factions to join. Each one has a specific arsenal to choose from. For example, the Firebrands offer only weapons designed to spread fire like the oil barrels while the maniacs offer melee and ramming capabilities like the explosives on a stick. Access to these factions is not prohibitive as you can easily switch once per day and maintain access to the goods so long as you have the resources to do so.
There is little story to it and little room for adventures and relationships with in game characters, there is just you, your machine and everyone else fighting in the same fight you are. Crossout does not take itself seriously, (nor should anyone for that matter) it's there to immerse you in a glorious spectacle of fire and destruction and you're there to win it all and have a ton of fun while doing so.
