chapter 3 | Monophobia

The feeling of my phone vibrating in my pocket makes me get it out and check what provoked this. A message from my boss.

< Sorry if I'm bothering you but I just wanted to tell you that I gave your number to my daughter. You're the only one I trust so I want her to have someone in case she might not be able to reach me. Is that okay with you? ]

[ Yes sure, no problem. I'm here for her if she needs someone >

< Thanks👌 ]

I put my phone on the sofa now that the conversation is done and lay my eyes on my laptop placed right next to me. I really like to know he trusts me enough to let me take care of his daughter whenever he's busy or away. I feel useful and helpful again in my life.

On top of that, his daughter is a good girl, so she's not complicated or hard to handle.

I shove the last piece of sandwich left in my mouth to eat and take my mind away, turning my head to the left to let it rest on the back of my sofa and focus on my laptop. I slide my finger over the keypad and work on the new project I need to complete the most I can.

Another vibration drifts my attention to my phone.

< by the way, I'm probably going to go out of the country for a week with my wife this month, could you keep an eye on my daughter? No need to say yes if that would bother you but I just dislike to let her all alone for so long... ]

[ What do you mean 'keep an eye'? Would you want me to keep her at my house? >

< Yes. Would that bother you? ]

[ No, not at all. I have enough of space for her, so I wouldn't mind doing this for you >

< sure? ]

[ Yes, sure. You know I'm always here to help >

< thank you so much! I will tell you a few days before we leave so you'll have time to adjust to it but I promise she will be quiet and won't ask for anything ]

[ Oh, no worries about that. I'm all alone at my house so some signs of life in here won't bother me😁 >

< if you need someone with you I can give you this little bug for some time, I would definitely be okay with it given the noise and rumpus she makes all the time😅 ]

[ She seems to be very calm and quiet from what I've seen. Is it the whole opposite once you're home? >

< yep. She's worse than my wife ]

[ 😅 >

[ But honestly, if you need some time alone with your wife, I'm here if you want a sort of 'babysitter' to stay with y/n >

< no that's fine, don't worry✌ ]

[ All right then >

As no other text is coming, I put my phone aside and take my laptop on my thighs to get to work for good.

— Next day —

Tuesday, October 08, 2019.

6 am.

An alarm ringing wakes me up, my body still lying down on my sofa with my laptop close to my head. "Fuck..." I squint my tired eyes but grab hold of my phone to stop the alarm. I can't believe this is already time to get up, I maybe fell asleep five hours ago while working so I'm exhausted.

I heave a sigh but sit up, stretching my body for all the cramps to go away. A moan of tiredness runs out of me, but I run my fingers through my hair to pull them back and then force myself to stand up. I rub my eyes and head to the other room to go to the door leading to the bathroom. I take my all my clothes off and throw them in the laundry basket, I turn the radio on to feel less lonely and hear the news, then I sluggishly make my way to the walk-in shower right behind the bath.

40 minutes later...

"Hello?" I pick up the call while driving to my workplace. "Jeon Jungkook?" the scary voice of the woman I cannot hear anymore without having an uneasy feeling in the stomach pronounces my name. "Y—Yes...?"

"Do you think we're going to give up? How many times do I have I to call you or text you to remind you of the money you owe to my daughter?!" she yells at the other side, but I keep my hands on my steering wheel and grip it nervously. "I..." a sigh stops me. "I do not owe her any money, all right?  She's the one who bought that expensive motorcycle for me, so this always belonged to me, even when she divorced. Stop harassing me! That vehicle was sold weeks ago, so I will not pay her."

"Yes, you will! You're a little son of a bitch!" she dares to insult me when I never did anything wrong. I hang up at her nose, done with this stuff. This woman is freaking sick in her head, and I'm tired of dealing with it. I clench my jaw and put my elbow on the door to calm myself down, putting my hand over my mouth and staring right in front of me. Why did I have to get involved in such a relationship? I should never have married that person.

Not only I had to deal with all the divorce's procedures, but now she left me in this expensive house of which the bills are impossible to pay now that's she not there to help. I thought I would spend my life with her, so that's why I bought that luxury house for her, she promised she would help me with the bills to make sure we would never be in trouble, but she left only because she was tired of the poor amount of money I was bringing home with my job.

I never complained but handled this for almost seven years...I can't even realize it.

I try not to break into tears but keep my calm, focusing on the road and nothing else. Thank god, I finally found an awesome job with the perfect boss to start everything over and find a better path for my life.

7 am.

I walk up the stairs now that I'm finally at my workplace, this building into which I always feel better with the people around me.

"Good morning, Jungkook," the woman's voice I know by heart greets me as I'm heading to my office, but I turn around and smile at her. "Good morning, how are you doing?" I answer Heeyoung, seeing her every day.

"Good, what about you? Have you worked on the new project that our boss launched?" she walks up to me with her pumps, my eyes landing on her lips that are oddly bright red. "Yes, I did. I'm fine too, I just lack of sleep but that's all right."

"You should stop overworking!" she hits my arm in a kind manner, but I chuckle, standing before the door of my office to chat with her. "Seriously! Your health is more important."

"Yeah, I know, but I don't want to disappoint the boss, he counts on me," I tell her, meaning my words to the full. "Talking about the boss...is that his daughter that I saw going in your office yesterday?"

"Yes, she's working to stand in for Aecha. Her father pays her, so she does it," I smile but understand why this little girl is so determined to do a good job. "Hm. You seem close to her...I mean...their family."

"Yeah, they're really caring and kind," I nod but take a look at her hands, seeing a piece of paper in it. "And...the girl...? Are you like...really close?" she shows some curiosity, her questions sounding a bit jealous. I know she's attracted to me, or at least, likes me, so I'm not surprised to hear that from her. "What do you mean by that?"

"I don't know..." she shrugs and pretends to not be sure. "Do you have a special relationship or something like that?" her vague answer gets me to chuckle. "Heeyoung. She's nineteen, she's too young for me, and she's the boss's daughter. I'd never do that to him."

"Good to hear," she smiles but presses her lips together. "Anyway, I have a lot of work to do, so see you later," her happiness radiates, but she walks away and lets me enter my office. I go to my desk and put my bag down. I undo some buttons of my dress shirt to fan myself and stroll to the windows to open one of them and let some air blow in.

The weather of today is unpleasantly hot, thank god, we have the air conditioning in our offices.

Someone knocking on the door makes me turn around, and I lean back on the large windowsill. "Come in," I let the person enter the room and watch the door get opened.

I smile once I see y/n. "Good morn—" I gasp as soon as her body trips over, making me rush to her. "Oh my god, are you okay?" I squat down to her level and check up on her. As expected, her face is red as hell and she's embarrassed. "Y—Yeah..." she stutters, but I grab her arm to help her to get back up on her feet. "Did you hurt yourself?"

"No..." she shakes her head and passes her hands over her clothes. "Your feet hit the ball on the floor I guess?" I mention this metallic thing that is supposed to keep the door open, but which always causes some falls. "Yeah...I didn't see it..."

"Well...at least you didn't get hurt," I smile but take my hand off of her. She clears her throat, and I bend over to grab the stuff she dropped on the floor when she fell. She really is a clumsy girl, but that's cute. "Are you sure you're okay?" I turn towards her while gathering all the pieces of papers, and she nods. Her body language says otherwise though.

I make fast to pick up the stuff, and put it down on my desk. "What is happening?" I pull my hair back and get closer to her at the sight of her different behavior. She seems nervous, but not in a good way. "I...nothing...I need to go back to my dad—" her arm gets grabbed by my hand and stops her. I stare at her features without glancing away, ignoring the fact she always avoids eye contact. "Tell me. I can see there's something wrong."

She tucks some strands of hair behind her ear but lowers her eyes to the ground. "Someone just scared me...that's all. I'm not doing my job properly..."

"Who?" I don't let her go without knowing the name of this person, not tolerating this at all. "And why did they scare you? What did they do?"

"I don't know...I was just coming here after leaving my dad, but I bumped into him by accident and he...he yelled at me and all...he's tall but..." she doesn't describe him more, my hand going away from her body as I just realized I was still touching her. "Forget it...I'm okay..." she passes the back of her hand on her red cheek but steps to the door to get out.

I'm pretty sure I know who he is, he's the only one in here that talks rudely to the women. I sigh but decide to get out of the room while she's heading back to her dad's office on my right. I hurry towards the door number twenty-one, but without even knocking on the door, I barge in the office and see him sitting at his desk.

"Did you dare raise your voice at her?!" I slam the door behind me but head up to him. He chuckles without taking this seriously and rolls his chair back. "No way she already complained."

I clench my jaw but step to his chair to grab him by his collar and lift him up. "Do not dare to approach her again. All right? She's a fucking kid, and she's here to help us, so do not ever think about lashing out at her. And you better not have touched her, you son of a bitch," I stare into his eyes but push him away, violently. "If she's a kid, what is she doing here?"

"That's none of your business, so shut the fuck up and just do your job," I control myself to not punch him in the face but get out of here without closing the door just to piss him off since he will have to do it himself. Now, I don't go back to my office but to my boss' one and knock on the door.

This whole thing just created so much rage inside of me that I cannot restrain myself. This is something I cannot abide.

Once my boss lets me in, I go inside. "Mister Kim," I peek at y/n sitting right before his desk and at some feet away from me. "I'd like to ask you to do something about Moo Jinhyuk. He just raised his voice at your daughter and scared her, so I'm pretty sure he used his hands again. I really cannot stand to see this happening here, Sir. He doesn't have the right to do that and still keep his job."

His eyebrows frown as this sudden reaction of me must have caused some confusion, but he looks at his daughter. "Is that true?" he asks her in a quiet voice, but she nods with her gaze down, making him look back at me. "I'm going to do something. Don't worry and thank you for mentioning it."

"No problem..." I bow to him before leaving the office and stepping towards mine. This is not the first time I have to mention it to him, he always likes to be rude and show a lot of authority whenever a woman is in front of him, but also to touch them up. However, once I face him he never dares to get mad.

In order to calm myself down, I drop myself on my chair and exhale sharply. I lick my lips but grab my phone to text one of my friends.

[ hey, do you know if it's allowed to sue someone for sexual harassment with some proofs that come from CCTV footage in the offices? >

Since I know he must be busy at this hour and cannot answer, I put my device on my desk and open my laptop. I was able to control myself when I was seeing him close to a woman, I would tell him to back off and he would, but now, it's too much. I know this girl and I have to be there for her. She's young, so this gets me even more mad.

30 minutes later...

"Come in!" I voice out while typing on my keyboard, the person entering the room and getting all my attention. "Watch your steps," I smile but warn her about the thing she hit with her foot earlier, and a little giggle runs out of her mouth. "Yes," she nods and peeks down at the floor to come closer. "I'm sorry for coming here again, but my dad...wants me to stay here while he's solving the problem with the man..." she links her arms behind her back.

"No problem, you can sit down on the sofa," I gesture her to get comfortable in here, glad to hear those words given the way this upset me some minutes ago. She fixes her skirt and sits down, staying a bit tense on her spot but making me laugh quietly. I keep my eyes fixed on my screen and focus on my work to not get distracted.

She really is a soft girl who does her best, so imagining someone getting mad at her is something that pisses me off. I already hate men who think they are above women and have the right to disrespect them, so the fact that she is a young one, who is all sweet and calm, heightens my wrath. That's like if a guy was doing something to my daughter, just the thought of it makes me want to kill him.

"What has he done earlier?" I grab my cup, not able to restrain myself from asking. She lays her arms over her lower stomach as I'm drinking my warm chocolate. Her eyes wander around the room, but the only thing coming from her is silence, her expression and behavior making it obvious she's hesitating.

"You can tell me if he did more than yell at you. I just thought about it when I was working, but I kinda realized that I didn't hear anything so...I'm wondering..." I bring my cup lower to my torso, holding it with both of my hands while gazing at her.

"Maybe...he didn't yell at me..."
