Chapter 1 - A Sorry Tale This One Is

Let me tell you about my life. It's nothing particularly brilliant or exciting, but it is mine so I find it fairly attractive. Have you ever been on a road trip? I have.

Long car rides are fantastic, don't you think? Especially if you aren't driving. Or if you are, if that's what you like. There, you drive, I'll ride shotgun. That's what I'd like. Unless you want to be the passenger? I have no problem driving.

But my favorite part of a drive is the seemingly eternal bliss and quiet. I guess it's only bliss if you haven't a destination in mind. It's not very quiet when your pal's arm is hanging on by sinew and your mind is racing with excuses for the officer that is going to inevitably pull you over and for your mother who will most definitely question about the blood in the seats. That's another story.

I want to tell you about the trips that are all about the adventure and not the destination. The ones where your hours upon hours of road is filled with the sleepy lulls and the energy fill staccatos of music and laughing.

You know what would be real fun? Driving together in a convertible, blasting music. What music do you like? I always listen to that one song... what was it called... take me to your best friend's house, I - Tongue Tied! Yes, very good, thank goodness you knew. I wouldn't have thought of that until three in the morning.

This particular ride, I had no agenda in mind. I just wanted... adventure. I drove through canyons and desert, through forests, and along the beach. It was a very long car ride if you couldn't tell. I had money but it wasn't any fun sleeping in motels so I camped a bit, slept in my car in Wal-Mart parking lots, that sort of thing. Have you ever slept in a parking lot? You should try it! Maybe you and I could one of these days! I meant, just sleeping, of course. Unless...

Sorry, where was I? Parking lots? Yes, they're quite alright for sleeping in.

But my adventure wasn't planned is what I'm getting at. That's what life should be about! It's like swimming in the ocean. You can fight the current or you can let it take you out, sending you far into the salty waters. On second thought, that could be dangerous. Think of it as... have you ever floated a river? Or a canal? Is that even legal anymore? The canal? Anyway, the river pushes you along. You don't do much, just let it happen.

That's what life should be about, you know? Like, just gliding through, never worried. You don't get mad and stressed when there's a tree branch sticking out in the river. It's just natural so you let it be, working your way around it and continuing on your little adventure.

That would be nice, wouldn't it? To not have worries? I have worries. I know you have worries. I can feel them. The way they crawl about your head, clawing at the back of your eyes. You're pretty good at hiding it actually. I wouldn't even notice if I wasn't looking. But there they are, the little scars from a long lost battle.

I've rambled, I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to keep going like this. But I am honored you've listened to my story, it means more than you know. Sometimes you need to talk, you know?
