Chapter 5
It's nineties night at The Galaxy tonight and Nicole and I are beyond excited. I've decided to channel a cross between Cher and Tai from Clueless, while Nicole has channeled her inner baby one more time Britney, with pigtails and all. Henry's already at the club working tonight, but we've already seen him in his huge JNCO jeans, which he borrowed from his older brother who grew up in the nineties, and his Nirvana t-shirt.
It's another cold night and by the time we reach the club I think my legs are about to freeze right off my body. Luckily with Henry working there we get in right away. People always scowl and make ridiculous comments as the guard lifts the rope, but we're used to it by now. The Galaxy is a hot spot no matter what day of the week it is.
Inside the place is swarming with Britney Spears, butterfly clips, and huge jeans. Nineties music echoes through the club as people sing along and dance. On Thursday Theme nights the club plays a variety of music unlike on a normal night when it's mostly club music. We head to the bar to let Henry know that we've arrived. He's already got our drinks sliding down the bar in our direction. I grab a hold of my amaretto and slowly sip while mixing with the little red stick.
After Nicole and I down a few drinks we're ready to dance. As much as I love dancing I do need a few in me before I can really let lose. We head to the dance floor hand in hand as Barbie Girl starts and the crowd screams. We get lost in each other and dance our hearts out like there's no tomorrow. Sweat pours down my back as the crowd starts to swell. Sensing my anxiety Nicole grabs my hand and dances with me twirling me around. I notice a few guys staring at us as she pulls me into her and we sway to the music together.
The crowed goes wild as the DJ plays your typical party songs from the era. A little bit of Monica, and some Macarena with a side of Cotton Eye Joe. It's almost like country night where everyone is doing the same dance together. Laughing and out of breath Nicole and I continue to dance without a care in the world. The DJ bleeds the last song into Baby One More Time, and the crowd hollers again, including Nicole and I.
"Ya gotta have faiiiiithhhh," someone sings a very out of key Limp Bizkit from behind me, unfortunately it's a voice I'm getting used to hearing.
I turn around and face Jace who's dressed like the Fresh Prince. From behind I hear Nicole snort. I'm trying so hard to keep my stone cold face, but I'm failing because he's actually wearing overalls.
"Nice overalls," I say.
"Thought you'd be impressed," he says a little too close to my ear.
I back away into Nicole and she holds onto my waste. Jace notices and I can see that look in his eyes again. I think he's still a bit confused about the relationship Nicole and I have. His friend Rob stands behind him watching our interaction. I take in his ridiculous looking baggy pants with a crazy design and realize he's trying to be Vanilla Ice. I roll my eyes and turn back to dance with Nicole.
The DJ fades from Britney to a slow country song and it's a weird transition, but the couples on the floor start dancing together. I'm afraid to turn around, although I'm not sure he's even there. A light tap on my shoulder tells me that he is. I'm nervous, but I can't let it show. I close my eyes and when I open them Nicole is staring waiting for me to give her the signal that I can't do this. I shake any of those thoughts and think about my cousin. I think about what he did to her and just the thought makes me angry. All I have to do is make him fall so hard that when I let him go it hurts so badly. Do guys even feel that type of pain? Or do they just move on? Sometimes I feel like they are numb to being dumped.
I turn just as he's about to tap my shoulder again. He holds out his hand, I stare at it and then look up at him. I wait for him to ask me, and I'm pretty sure he's about ready to take advantage of the moment and grab a hold of me, but he doesn't. Without blinking he looks me straight in the eye, "Would it be okay if I danced with you? It would involve me touching you," he says.
I'm shocked that he remembered my rule. I'm not quite sure if he's being sincere or not. His voice sounds like he's trying to play it cool, but at the same time there's a softness in his tone. What I do know is this is how he gets girls with those pleading eyes, he's trying so hard I just hope he knows it won't ever work on me.
"You put your hand on my ass and your toast, got it?" I say.
He chuckles and holds out his hand again. I stretch out my hand and he spins me into him, as I hit his chest his lips graze my ear and he whispers, "Got it," and then twirls me out adjusting our position so that we are dancing together but leaving plenty of space. I feel relieved when the song is over, it was starting to feel like an awkward middle school dance when boys had cooties.
As the music picks up Nicole and I start to let lose again. His cousin Robert is dancing with some girl behind us, while Nicole stays close and the three of us dance together. I'm shocked that we both know a lot of the same songs, Jace doesn't seem like the type to know most of them, but somehow he does. We dance for what feels like hours not really talking or looking at each other. On occasion I'll feel him staring at me, but when I look he's off looking at some of the other girls. A few have cut in and he's gone along with it while they grind against his body. It's getting to the point in the night where my feet are on fire and my throat burns for something to drink. I wave Nicole down and she nods in agreement. I look over for Jace, but he's already moved on. I guess this whole thing might be a little harder than it looks, he's easy to stray.
The two of us walk over to the bar, Henry's a bit busy so he throws up his finger to let us know he needs a minute. Nicole and I slide onto the stools and lean over the bar to rest.
"This might be harder than I thought," I say.
"What?" I ask.
"Breaking him," I say nodding towards the dance floor.
"Don't tell me you like him already..."
"God no," I say. "He's very quick to move on to the next girl it's like he's got no soul," I tell her.
"Giving up already?" she asks.
"Me, give up? Nah, just have to step up my game a bit," I tell her.
"And how are you planning to do that?" she questions as Henry slides our drinks over.
I pick up the glass and down the drink then slam the glass back onto the bar. Nicole looks at me as I spin in my chair. Jace is walking towards me like he's been searching and it's in that moment that all my doubts about this actually working vanishes.
The music is loud so he steps close but far enough so that he's not touching me, "Thought you left me," he says into my ear.
He backs away and I can feel Henry staring from the other side of the bar. I look at his face to try and get a read; cocky asshole is the only thing I see at the moment. His snake like smirk is back and I'm pretty sure he believes he's already reeled me in.
"We didn't want to interrupt, you looked pretty into that girl you were grinding with," I say.
"Jealous?" he growls.
I look at Nicole, and I'm really trying to keep myself together because I need to make this hard for him. I can't help myself though, he thinks I'm jealous? He's probably so used to girls pining over him that the first thought in his head was that I was jealous.
"Sure, if that's what you want to believe," I laugh.
I roll my eyes and turn to see Henry placing another drink down on the bar. He looks at me and leans low to get a glimpse of my face. "Be careful," he grumbles in a low tone so that Jace won't hear. I give him a look and before he pulls away I down another drink. Feeling a slight buzz I turn back to Jace and he's staring at me with a look that I can't read.
"Want to get some fresh air?" he questions.
I look to Nicole and she's busy chatting with his cousin Robert. I turn back to Jace and he's looking down at his phone until he feels my eyes on him. He lifts his brow and stares at me, "So?" he asks.
"I guess so," I give him a bored look and toss my hair behind my shoulder.
"Don't sound too excited," he jokes.
He holds a hand out and I hop down ignoring his attempt to help me. Sighing he turns and heads for the door. I follow behind him as we weave in and out of got on a brown leather jacket the crowd. We stop by coat check to get out jackets and then head outside. As we step outside he pulls a cigarette carton from his brown leather jacket. Gross. We walk over to the edge of the building right at the mouth of an alleyway. He holds the box out to me and I give him a look.
"Do I look like a smoker?" I question.
"Hey, just offering," he says almost offended.
He lights up and puts the box away then stares straight ahead. Sirens yell in the distance, a few cabs drive by and I can hear people screaming as they come out of the club. I love the sounds of New York always something going on in this big city. I lean against the wall and wonder why this is so awkward. I have no clue what to say to the guy, but I know I need to step up my game if I want to succeed.
"What brings you to the city?" I ask attempting to make friendly conversation.
"Needed a break," he says puffing out some smoke.
He looks over at me and then turns his head in the direction of a fire truck that whizzes past one block over.
"And you think New York could help you with that? Have you seen this city? If you wanted a break you should have gone to some remote island," I say.
He laughs, "The chaos of this city is calming actually," he tells me, his eyes looking vacant for a moment. He shakes his head from his own thoughts and puts out the cigarette.
"I actually have to agree with you on that," I say. "There's something about the noise that calms me. I don't think I could ever live in the country with no one around for miles. It would be like the start to my favorite horror movie," I say.
"You can't be serious Scream is your favorite?" he asks.
"How did you get that out of me just saying they have no neighbors for miles?" I question.
He gives a sly smile then throws his cigarette to the floor. He blows a puff of smoke as he stomps on the cigarette.
"I know horror, and that my friend is not a horror movie," he says.
"Are you kidding? I pissed my pants the first time I watched it!" I say unsure why I just admitted that. Okay so it wasn't like a full on gush of pee, it was a trickle.
He chuckles loudly watching for my reaction. I reach out and smack him on the shoulder, still laughing he rubs the spot. His eyes find mine for a brief second before looking at something down the street.
"So if you think your such a big horror fan what's the best movie?" I question.
It takes him a minute to pay attention to what I've asked, he's distracted still probably some girl with a big ass or something.
"The Shining," he says.
"For real?" I laugh. "Come play with us..." I say imitating the creepy little girls.
"Oh c'mon the blood pouring from the elevator is classic," he says.
I shrug and his attention is brought back to whatever it was on before. His phone rings in his pocket, a Linkin Park song screams from the tiny phone speakers. I can't help but hum along, it's one of my favorites.
"Hello?" he answers holding a hand against the ear that's not on the phone.
"You've got the stuff? Tonight? But I'm just... oh you know what never mind Rob and I will be there in twenty... I'm at The Galaxy it's going to take us at least that long to get over there. Okay, yeah," he says hanging up.
I'm trying not to stare or attempt to figure out what he's talking about. It's easy to tell Jace is into the drug scene, but that phone call sounded a bit like there was more to it. He looks at me and I think through his hard expression I can see a hint of regret that he's about to take off.
"Listen, I have somewhere I need to be, do you want to get coffee sometime?" he asks.
"If that's code word for sex then no, or if you really mean coffee that's a no too..."
He stares hard at me like he's trying to figure out if I'm joking or not. I've got a pretty good poker face and I'm pretty sure he's convinced that I mean it. As much as I have to play hard to get if this is going to go anywhere I'll have to actually spend time with him even if I don't want to.
"I'm joking," I say smiling.
"Knew that," he says shaking his head.
"I hate coffee so no coffee, maybe lunch or something?"
"Did you just friend zone me?" he questions with a smirk. It's not the snake like one he gets when he's trying to be a dick, this one is different; more playful.
I shrug, "Guess you'll just have to find out," I say.
"I'm intrigued by you Faith Montgomery," he says.
"How'd you know my last name?" I question.
"Took a guess that it was the same as Charlene's," he says.
"Oh so you actually took the time to know that much about her?" My voice sounds harsher than I intend for it to be, but he deserves it.
"Ouch. You know how to hit a guy right in the balls don't you?"
"Better watch it or you'll know what it really feels like to be kicked there by me," I tell him.
"Feisty Faith, how's tomorrow for our friend-date," he says.
"I'm working till three," I tell him.
"Oh... that means we'll be going out for dinner then, I've just unfriend zoned you," he says. "Okay that sounded ridiculous," he laughs and I nod in agreement.
"Meet me here at 3:30?" he questions.
"3:30 it is," I say.
"See you then Galaxy Girl," he says using the nickname he used when he saw me at the record store.
"Yeah, Yeah West Coast boy, go do whatever it is you have to do," I tell him.
He turns and starts to walk away, but stops and turns just before going back inside to get Robert. He looks back at me and then shakes his head at something before retreating back inside. This might be easier than expected.
