Backstage

Hey y'all, so some of you may know I am an actor. Well, I thought I'd write about the thrill of backstage. I love it so much, enjoy.

In fact I am going to be using some ancient ocs to tell this story.

Welcome back my friends, I'm sorry I forgot about you.

"Alright, one more time" Connor called. I looked to Hana. This was going to be amazing.

"Remember so smile" called Rey as we all dashed to our positions.

"If I forgot- actually I always forget" laughed Tom.

"Right Saf, don't die before you eat the poisoned food this time, okay?" said Loyd. I nodded.

"Action!" called Lucy.

"THAT IS IT! I QUIT!" Connor slammed his hand down on the desk.

"James, honey, come on, everything is going to be ok" said lucy with the best English accent I had ever heard.

"No no, it's not going to be ok. Did you hear about Cassy?"

"No, what happened?" Rey and Hanna came running over. I stood behind the red cloth they held as they ran in front of the table. Connor and Lucy got up and I sat down. They both ran off behind the screen. I pulled an apple out of my bag and took a bite.

"Poisoned apple, whatever, as if they could trick me. That's the stuff of fairy ta-" I dropped, trying not to hurt my head as I slammed it onto the table. I let the apple roll from my hand. Loyd picked it up and chucked it in the bin.

"GUYS, THEY'RE COMING!" called Tom.

"Alright everyone!" I called, standing up as Lucy and Rey rushed to set the stage. "Come here." We all gathered round. "Are we ready?"

"Yes."

"Do we have this!"

"Yes!"

"ARE WE GOING TO CRUSH THIS PERFORMANCE!"

"YES!"

"THEN ARE WE READY!!" We all put our hand in the center of our circle.

"YES!!"

"Then let's do this!" We all lifted our hands and then ran to get ready. The stage was set as we all dashed backstage. Tom welcomed everyone as we all put on our costumes. Lucy must have put on music for everyone and we were all singing to it, big smiles on our faces. I looked around. There were my friends, people who I could trust, people who I could love, and right now we have to share that love, right now we had a show to put on! I took the microphone and got ready. I warmed up my voice and tested the mic, putting on an American accent.

"Hello." It sounded so funny and we all began laughing. "I'm using that voice for the real thing you know" I said, wiping tears from my eyes.

"Ok, it's time, let's begin" said Connor, poking his head round the curtain. I nodded and began as he and Lucy headed on stage.

"Once upon a time" I said in the accent, trying so hard not to laugh, "there was a boy and a girl." Rey gave me a surreptive nod. "The boy was the son of fire." I felt reality grip me. "The girl was the daughter of water."

"Oh, that rhymes!" said Hana. I nodded and continued.

"The boy only wished to have fun." Again, a flash of reality. This wasn't them, yet it was. They were playing themselves as much as they were playing strangers. "The girl only wished for beauty." It all went well from there. I felt so important running around backstage helping out with costumes and stage timings. Then came my first scene. I had Lucy and Tom check my costume.

"Good luck, sis" he said. I smiled. My brother was always there for me. Even though we fell out a lot he always looked after me and I did the same. He really was the best brother I could ever wish for. I stepped out and set my face, ready for the show. My character was angry and sassy so a glare was the right facial expression. I was nervous but also excited. I marched across to Rey.

"I see you must have gotten new clothes" I said, not with the accent this time.

"Yes, I did. I'm so glad you noticed!" She was supposed to say more. Someone had to say something before the silence extended too long. This was the hardest part but she was clearly lost.

"I wonder where you got them from?" I said. We locked eyes for a second, a subtle understanding passing between us, a silent thanks.

"Oh, my mother made them."

"No wonder they look so bad." I pushed her over. She landed hard. Luckily at this moment I had my back to the audience. You are never supposed to do that but for this next part it was essential. 'I'm sorry' I mouthed. She nodded quickly but otherwise stayed in character. I pretended to beat her up, then Lucy and Connor began talking across the stage. We both swiftly stood and left

"Girls!" called Hana.

"What?" I said, running over.

"I can't get the shopkeeper costume off and I need to be the headmistress." She was supposed to be on any minute.

"Ok, let us help." It was way too tight for her and the apron was knotted a bit too well.

"I don't want to break it" she said. Connor and Lucy seemed to understand and were improvising an interesting conversation on stage.

"Who cares, the shopkeeper doesn't come back onstage and we can fix it later." Rey got some scissors and cut the apron off. We finally managed to get her jumper off and we handed her the necklace and jacket for her next character. She put them on and rushed off onstage.

"Weren't you supposed to be following her?"

"Yes but I didn't say anything. She was more important than me in this scene." The show ran exactly as we had planned from there till the end. We sang and danced backstage, panicked and searched for lost costumes, but smiles were shared all around. With every person I passed one would smile at the other and of course, the other smiled back.

"I can remember the feeling of freedom, the sense of rightness, and that was life before I became the movie star I am today." The girl looked at me. She seemed surprised.

"So you began in a stage show?"

"Not even that. Me and my friends would put on shows for the community in the town hall."

"Wow!" I smiled. It was amazing to have fans, but it was even better to have friends, and through acting that is what I had got.
