Hey Vee, do you mind swinging by my office later today? Some little birds whisper that there might be an opening for that job.
Every word of the text message rang like a broken record in my head from its arrival till now. It felt too good to be true. Something was finally going to get me excited.
I hummed internally, drumming my feet against the floor as the elevator went up. Even being stuck with people I loved to avoid did nothing to stump my mood. My eyes flickered around the elevator, taking everyone in with a smile. Being surrounded by a shy nerd who wants to be nowhere else but his room playing video games, a babe with a brilliant smile on her face ready to soak everyone in with all that happy goodness, a protective alpha male standing at attention ready to snap at anything that might be a potential threat and a weird looking old man weren't the worst people to be surrounded with in my exciting moment.
As we passed by each floor, my heart pounded hard against my rib cage. Time slowed enticing me with anticipation as we neared my father's office floor. My breath hitched. I was sailing so smoothly towards my dream.
Until a crashing storm in the form of an abrasive voice from the weird-looking old man crashed against my ship. "I bet you're wondering why I gathered you all here today."
The elevator jerked as he capsized my ship by hitting the emergency stop button.
"The hell, dude?!" Alpha male screeched before I could, standing in front of us and putting his hands out trying to protect... everyone?
I glared at the weird-looking man who had faced us now with a calm grin on his rather chipped lips.
"Now, now, Robert. That is no way to talk to your elders, is it? I bet Mama Rose wouldn't be so pleased if she was here right now."
I retracted backwards at the same time Alpha now Robert stiffened. Blinking continuously with fresh interest, I watched the exchange calmly.
A few veins popped out of place as Alpha Robert stared at the old man with wide, mystified eyes. "Who are you?" Though his voice shook from the build-up of his tensed muscles, he held on strong, holding onto his title to a fault.
"Now that is the million-dollar question, isn't it?"
"Don't tell me you're going to say you're the man beyond our imaginations, the one who would make our dreams come true?" The babe asked with that aching smile still on her lips.
"Well, I wasn't going to say that exactly, Camilla."
"Oh, cut the crap, old man. You know our names; we get it but you are beginning to lose my attention with all this dilly-dallying you have going on. So, if you really have something to say, now is the right time to say it. Mr..." I titled my head, gauging him. "Luke? You definitely look like a Luke type of guy."
His knowing smile turned into a full-blown grin, like he knew exactly what I was going to say and that I was going to get his name right. He took a bow, his hands swinging backwards with extra dramatization. "Avery Boss. I must say it is good to make your acquaintance. All of you." He added at the last minute.
"As mere second thoughts?" smiling Camilla murmured.
"I am called Luke Carter here on earth."
Looks like I got that one right. Again.
I knew the others were looking at with wonder at my being right, but that was the least of the problem. What did Mr Weird Luke Carter mean by 'here on earth'?
As if hearing the question in my mind, he pulled everyone's attention away from me with his next words.
"The princess of Świat marzeń was kidnapped and I have specifically handpicked you all to rescue her."
I scoffed, but what was about to make it out of my lips got stuck there, making me choke by the low but husky voice of shy nerd right by my side.
"Świat marzeń?" he asked.
He speaks! Interesting.
"Świat marzeń is nothing but a video game. How are we meant to rescue the princess of a video game?"
"Elijah, how about I let you figure that one out on your own?" With his smile still plastered on his face and a focused gaze on us all, he took two steps backwards and instead of hitting the elevator door, he went right through it.
Oh snap, really now?
Gasps echoed through the elevator right before Weird Luke's voice echoed through the walls. "If you want to find out, all you have to do is step through the doors."
That was crazy. What were we doing walking through walls and doors like we were passing through platform nine and three-quarters?
"Don't worry. I'll test it out, okay? Just..."
Oh bother.
I pushed past skittish Alpha Robert and took one deep breath in before walking right through. I heard a couple of shouts from behind, but I lost all of that as I took in the scene before me.
Right before me was a twisted underworld that had a smile growing on my lips. The floor beneath my feet went from the cold elevator metal floors to soft cloud floors. Literal clouds under my feet! And then there are... are those jelly fishes floating or rather flying in the air like birds of the sky?
The entire thing around me was like an enormous monster took in the norm, chewed on it, reshaped it with its mouth and then spat it right back out to form a world of its own. A world of the unexpected.
Gasps behind let me know the others had finally taken their leap of faith, but I was so focused on the stars flickering around my feet, taunting and interesting me to reach for them. I would have been a fool not to, in this sense, reach for the stars and so I did but it jumped right out of my reach, shining brighter almost with a seductive smile that had me chuckling, my heart thumping in rather exciting ways.
"Welcome to Świat marzeń. I am your host, Nisaki Kuninore."
Nerdy Ethan sucked in a quick breath, and his eyes shone with pure wonder. The corner of my lips curled up as I turned to then Luke and now Nisaki. His clothing had changed from the casual black-fitted suit into a loose wool-knit multi-coloured attire that fell from his shoulders, shaping and reshaping itself at will.
He stretched forth his hands, letting the wool in his clothing come loose into various strands and make their way to us, each different colour clothing us in attires of our own and yet never leaving him in his birthday suit.
I looked down with wide beaming eyes, watching as each stand weaved itself to clothe me.
"We have chosen you all for the traits you can see in front of you."
A cloud popped in front of each of us displaying that which were the qualities for which they chose us for. Little stars gleamed within the cloud before me, each forming a letter that read Ability to read people and into situations, ready to learn the rope of new things.
Yes, they definitely got that right. I could feel the difference already, the spark of the new this world carried with it. It was definitely not going to be the norm of just reading people and getting a handle on a situation before it happened. It was more than that and I was more than ready to learn it all.
Nerdy Elijah had his stars show they chose him because of his knowledge of the world. A life map. Hmm, that makes sense.
They chose Alpha Robert for his, of course, leadership and protection skills.
And they chose smiling Camilla for her positive energy, needed for patronizing us and, fortunately, our enemies.
"The king specifically asked for your traits from the outer world rather than from our endless treasures of individuals because he believes there just might be something you have that we don't. Do not let us down, earthlings."
He paused for a minute and took a step back, his laid back all gone and replaced with a straight face. "Are you ready to save the princess?"
Yes!
I was definitely ready to explore the sensation of the new world. My pulse quickened and my body was light with excitement. With an impulse to whoop it all up, I turned to the others seeing equally excited beams across their faces.
"Where do we begin?"
