Under Pressure

Excuse me if the writing is awful, or there are plot holes, or whatever other flaws you see. I'm a beginner - I'd appreciate constructive criticism but please be nice!

The power button on the TV remote was so overused that it was nearly impossible to press it down enough that the TV would switch on or off.

Aanya was completely exasperated with the thing.

She pressed the button so hard that her finger got an indent. She tried brute force, smashing the button with her thumb all at once. She got nothing but an aching finger.

The reality show her parents had been watching before they went to that ridiculous work party continued playing.

Aanya sighed and put down the remote. No point in breaking her wrist trying to turn the TV off.

When would Dadi and Dada be here? She couldn't wait. Maybe that wrench her eccentric grandma always carried would be of some use in turning off the TV.

She checked her watch. 10:45? They were supposed to be here at 10:30, and they were never late!

Aanya reached for the phone on the coffee table, and started dialing Nonna's number.

Ding-dong! Ding-dong! Ding-dong! Ding-dong! Aanya jumped at the sudden sound of the doorbell. The ringing continued.

"I'm coming," Aanya called. Who'd ring that many times? Aanya counted 15, 16, 17, 18...

She yanked open the door.

Her friend Olive was standing there. "Aanya," she said urgently. "Your grandma's really sick! You've got to come now."

"My grandma," Aanya said, stunned. "What's happened?"

"I don't know. I think she's had a heart attack," Olive replied.

Aanya's family had a history of heart disease. She knew her Dadi had a lot of heart problems. She just never thought they were that severe.

Aanya grabbed the keys to her house and shut the door. She dashed out onto the front lawn, looking for the ancient blue bucket of bolts her grandma drove. She didn't see anything.

Olive said, "They aren't here. They've parked on the next street."

Aanya ran blindly to the intersection and turned left. Oh no what the heck oh no what the heck played on repeat in her head.

Now she saw the car. She yelled through the window, "Dada!"

Her grandpa looked up. "Aanya! आखिरकार! क्या आपके मित्र ने आपको आपकी दादी की बीमारी के बारे में बताया? तुम्हारे माता और पिता कहाँ हैं? अस्पताल कहाँ है? तुम ड्राइव करना जानते हो?" (Finally! Did your friend tell you about your grandmother's illness? Where are your mother and father? where is the hospital? do you know how to drive?)

Aanya's grandfather had never learned to drive, and didn't know the meaning of Google Maps. They couldn't get to the hospital by themselves.

"Slow down! The hospital's four miles away, and I can't drive - I'm 13! I'll call Ma."

Her grandpa had a strong tendency to speak in Hindi when he was nervous or afraid.

Dadi was pale, her eyes shut. Aanya asked Olive if her parents could come help.

"No, they're at work of course!"

Aanya knew nobody would be home anywhere else on the street. She couldn't count on her parents - they were fifteen miles away and Dadi looked like she was ready to die.

Aanya shut her eyes. What can I do what can I do what can I do?

Then she realized that she'd missed the solution the whole time.

She grabbed her phone and called 911.

When the medics arrived - six minutes later - they judged that Dadi had had a mild heart attack and loaded her into the ambulance. Aanya's parents arrived at the hospital, having abandoned the work party halfway through.

Aanya headed back home with the wrench and used the edge to prod the power button on the TV remote.

The reality show turned off.

Thank goodness. Aanya couldn't stand that anchor's voice.
