Dark or Light?
The world was once filled with nothing but Darkness, but that was before the Light came. For millennia the two had stayed on opposite ends of the universe, making the sun and moon and stars; that is until they decided that they should know their counterpart, each had taken on a human life, living among humans.
Liam rushes through the busy New York streets, trying desperately to make it to his first class of the day. Darting through the all-too-slow business people, he mumbles apologies under his breath, and eventually reaches the campus gates. As he runs to his class he trips over someone's foot and faceplants. His bookbag flies open and scatters books, scraps of paper, and tens of little gum wrapper origami birds. The black-boot clad foot that tripped him moves slightly to the left before the person starts picking up the origami birds as Liam shoves the books into his bag.
“Sorry dude, didn’t mean to trip you. I don’t see enough people barreling down hallways to know not to stretch my legs.” A hand with black painted nails reaches over to help Liam up after everything is back in the bag.
“Cool birds man.” Liam stands up, fixing his glasses, and looks around the hall.
“No yeah, it’s cool, probably shouldn't've pulled an all-nighter. Not to pry, but shouldn’t you be in class?”
The girl shrugs and sits back down on the ground, going back to her book. Liam shakes his head and goes to class, getting a dirty look from the professor he interrupted. After his class there are a few hours until the next class so he goes into the campus cafe to study and grab a jumbo cup of coffee to keep him up after his late night. He goes up to the counter and checks his wallet, making sure he has enough money, and waits for the barista to come back. The same goth girl from the hallway comes up to the counter and raises an eyebrow at him.
“Ah, bird boy, good to see you. What can I get you?” She smirks at him as he rolls his eyes, ordering a tall black coffee and handing her the money. He waits patiently as she makes the drink, a disgusted look on her face, and dazes off until his name is called.
“So, Liam, is the biggest cup of black coffee your usual drink? Do you know how unhealthy that is?” She scoffs in disgust and hands the cup to him.
“I only drink this after a late night of studying,” he squints to read her nametag, “Danika. Studying requires fuel and this is my poison of choice.”
She shakes her head and goes back to the registrar to help the next customer. Liam finds an empty seat near the counter and cracks open his Calculus textbook. After a frustrating 15 minutes, Danika walks over and sits in the empty seat next to him and grabs his pencil; she finishes the problem he was struggling on and puts the pencil back down.
“It’s quite easy; just divide this number here, add these together, and then it's simple algebra from here." She gives a small smile and sits back in her chair while Liam looks at her quizzically. "What? You were struggling, I helped." He rolls his eyes and continues working while Danika just watches.
"Why are you just sitting there? Don't you have anywhere to be? We don't know each other, we only met twice."
"Pulling a double shift, but their spaced out and my next shift doesn't start for an hour." She sticks out her hand to shake mine, which I do hesitantly. "I'm Danika Dark, local goth."
Liam chuckles slightly and puts his hand back down. "Weird coincidence, I'm Liam Light." Danika looks over him before a large smile overtakes her face.
"Wait a minute dude, Light and Dark? Do you see what's happening here?" Liam shakes his head in confusion. "Man, I'm Darkness," she says with a much lower voice, "y'know the ancient embodiment of all things dark. And your Light, my exact opposite." She moves her shirt down to reveal a moon birthmark on her collarbone; Liam does the same, revealing a sun birthmark.
"No way, I didn't think I'd actually meet you, I’m only in my first human life.” Liam leans forward and drops his voice to a whisper only Danika is able to hear. “Ok so I have to know; why make stars when you already made the moon as a light source?”
She laughs and does another problem from the textbook. “Well the sky didn’t look bright enough and I thought they looked pretty.” Liam nods and watches her do a bunch of problems with ease. “Y’know now that we’re friends and know about each other we could do some seriously awesome stuff in the universe, team up together.”
“Well we can only do so much, it’s not like we created the universe, just a few essentials.” Liam starts packing up his bag, intending to be early to his next class. “Maybe we can find that guy and create something really amazing. What do you say, Danika Dark?” Danika stands from the table and goes behind the counter, grabbing her apron and putting it back on.
“Sounds like a plan Liam Light.”

Might make a part 2, idk yet. Wrote this in my creative writing class so I'll hopefully be publishing more stuff now.
