63. Jake Surprises Him On Tour
A/n: Okay so I know that it's not spring break from college and I know that Shawn's not in Florida, but please just go with it. Anyways, please enjoy this imagine. Okay, without further ado, let's begin!
Shawn's point of view
My fans screamed as I sat down at my question and answer session. I put my finger to my lips so they would quiet down.
"So, per usual, if someone is asking a question, please don't talk while they're asking the question. Also, if you need me to repeat a question, I will. Oh, and one more thing, my son is nineteen, and he's on spring break from college, and so I had texted him and asked him if he wanted to come to Florida for spring break since I'm here in Florida, but he texted back and said that he already had plans." I said. My fans laughed.
"Yeah, what do you think those plans were?" I heard a familiar male voice ask. My eyes widened and I looked around the room.
"Jake?" I asked.
"Hi dad." He said, and I spotted him. I stood up and smiled.
"Hey! Come here!" I said. Jake stood up and walked over to me. He gave me a bro hug.
"Do I get to sit here?" He asked. I nodded and we sat down.
"Okay guys, this is my son, Jacob Alexander Scott Mendes, but we just call him Jake. What are you doing here?" I asked as I turned to him.
"Surprising my dear old dad, and then I'm going to party it up for the rest of spring break." He said.
"Oh God. No, drinking, you're underage." I said.
"You let me have a beer with you at home." He said.
"Yes, at home, where I can watch you, and I only let you have one beer. I don't want E! News, or anyone, reporting that Shawn Mendes's underage son got drunk and partied all not long." I said.
"Okay." He said with a sigh. I chuckled.
"Is it okay if the fans ask you questions?" I asked. He nodded.
"Sure." Jake said. I turned to the fans.
"Okay, you guys, you can ask my son questions. Let's begin. What's your question?" I asked as I pointed at someone.
"Um, my question is for Shawn. Are you as strict and protective when it comes to Jake dating as you are with Rose and Julia?" She asked. I heard Jake chuckle.
"Probably not. But Jake knows to be a gentleman, not just with girls, but with anyone and to treat people with respect. He's had some girlfriends but it's not like he's a player." I said.
"Well, I was raised in a home where I would see my dad pull the chair out for my mom and then once she sat down he would push it in. My dad is constantly opening doors for my mom, even when she says that she can open them herself. I've grown up watching how my dad treats my mom, and sometimes, after my dad would do something nice for my mom, mom would look at my sisters and I and say 'See? This is how you should treat a lady.'" Jake said. I nodded.
"Well I have to treat my wife like a queen considering the fact that she is my queen." I said.
"You like to call her Queen Y/n, or Queen Mendes." Jake said. I smiled and nodded.
"Yup. What's your question?" I asked as I chose someone else.
"My question is for Jake, um, what's your favorite memory of your parents?" She asked. Jake thought for a moment.
"It was actually before my dad left for this tour, and my sisters and I were on the couch in the family room and my dad was at the piano. My mom wasn't home yet and my dad asked if we thought that mom would like it if he played her a song that he once sang to her on stage when they were engaged. We said yes, and so he pulled up a chair so it was next to the piano. When mom got home, dad had her sit down in the chair and he played Can't Help Falling in Love by Haley Reinhart. My mom ended up sitting next to my dad as he played and it was really nice to watch my dad sing to my mom as she leaned on him." Jake said. I nodded.
"I remember that. I switched the lyrics from 'I can't help falling in love with you' to 'I can't help falling in love with Y/n' which my wife loved. She had tears in her eyes when I did that but they were happy tears. I like serenading my wife. What's your question?" I asked.
"My question is for Shawn, what's your favorite song to sing to Y/n?" She asked.
"Oh God that's a hard one." I said.
"You sing a lot of songs to mom." Jake said. I nodded.
"I know. Well I loved Can't Help Falling in Love to her, but I also love singing Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran to her." I said.
"Oh, you know what I just remembered?" Jake asked. I looked at him.
"What did you just remember?" I asked.
"Waking up in the morning and hearing music downstairs. It was yours and mom's twenty year wedding anniversary and I went downstairs and peeked around the corner and you and mom were slow dancing to Thinking Out Loud in the kitchen. I just kind of stood there for a moment, and you guys were smiling and laughing and I remember thinking 'This is what love is. What mom and dad have, that's love.'" Jake said. I smiled at him and then looked at my wedding band before looking back at Jake.
"I didn't realize that you were standing there." I said. He shrugged.
"I was quiet. I didn't want to disrupt the moment." Jake said. I nodded and then chose someone else to ask a question.
"What's your question?" I asked.
"Do you guys realize how similar you guys look?" She asked and everyone laughed, including Jake and I.
"People tell us constantly that he's me when I was nineteen. He looks just like me, Rose looks just like her mother, and Julia is a mix of Y/n and I. Julia has my hair color, but Y/n's eyes." I said.
"Do you think that Rose is your favorite because she looks and acts so much like mom?" Jake asked.
"Stop it, I don't have a favorite." I said.
"Oh come on Dad. Rose is totally your favorite." He said.
"I really don't have a favorite. Here's the thing: Rose is the one that made me a father. I wasn't a father until she was born. But I don't have a favorite. I remember getting ready before my first tour back since Y/n and I had gotten married and had kids, and I got home and Rose wanted to play dress up and princesses, so I had Julia join us. I remember that night I told Y/n that I felt bad and when she asked why, I told her it was because I had barely spent anytime with her and I hadn't even gotten a chance to put Jake down for bed. The next morning I called Andrew and said that I couldn't come in because I needed to make sure that I spent time with Jake before I left for tour. So I spent time with Jake all day. Jake, I swear on your life, your sister's lives, and your mother's life that I don't have a favorite." I said. Jake nodded.
"Okay." Jake said.
"What's your question?" I asked as I picked someone.
"My question is for Shawn, how much does it mean to you that Jake surprised you?" She asked. I smiled and looked at my son for a moment.
"Oh God don't get emotional Dad." Jake said and everyone laughed. I chuckled.
"It means a lot. I haven't seen him in a while, so it's good to see him." I said. Soon the q and a came to an end, and Jake came backstage to my dressing room with me. He hugged me and I hugged back of course. We then sat down.
"We've missed you at home Dad. I try to visit on some weekends, and whenever I ask Mom how she's doing, she smiles and says that she's good, but I can tell that she misses you a lot. There was one day that I visited and she was alone in the living room looking at a scrapbook. She said that she made it for you as a two year wedding anniversary present and she started it from the beginning and there was a picture that was just you and her. She stayed on that page for a little bit longer than she did than the others, and she put her fingers on the photo. You called a little bit later and she got so excited and happy." Jake said. I nodded.
"I should give her a call now." I said. Jake nodded.
"Okay." He said. I called my wife.
"Hey hubby." She said and I smiled.
"Hey wifey. Our son is with me. Did you know that he was going to surprise me?" I asked. She giggled, causing my heart to flutter.
"Maybe." She said.
"Well I was very surprised and he sat with me and some fans even asked him questions. We're in my dressing room and he told me something." I said.
"What did he tell you?" She asked, so I told her. I heard her sigh.
"Why don't you call me whenever you miss me honey?" I asked.
"Because then we would be on the phone all the time. Shawn, you're my husband of twenty two years, and we've been together for twenty six years. Of course I'm going to miss you all of the time babe." She said.
"I miss you too honey. I love you." I said.
"I love you too. Hey, um, do you mind sending me some of your hoodies that smell like you? The ones that I have now don't smell like you anymore. I, um, I like falling asleep while holding them. Sorry if that sounds weird, I just miss holding each other." She said.
"That doesn't sound weird at all babe. I'll send you some as soon as I can. I'll talk to you later honey." I said.
"Okay. Bye baby." She said.
"Bye my sweet girl." I said, and we hung up. I looked at Jake, who was smiling.
"She's your favorite. Not me, not Rose, not Julia. Mom's your favorite, isn't she?" He asked. I chuckled and shook my head as I looked at my guitar.
"I don't have a favorite." I said. It was half the truth, half a lie, and Jake could tell.
"You don't have a favorite child, but you have a favorite person and it's mom." Jake said. It wasn't a question. It was a statement. I looked at him.
"Don't tell anyone, okay?" I asked.
"So I was right? Mom's your favorite person?" Jake asked. I nodded.
"Yeah. And please don't take it personally. I just... you'll understand when you meet the person that you want to spend the rest of your life with." I said. Jake nodded.
"Okay." He said. I looked at my wedding band and thought of how lucky I am. I'm the luckiest man alive to have Y/n as my wife, and to have three beautiful and amazing children with her.
