194. You Guys Renew Your Vows

Shawn's point of view

My wife of nineteen years, Y/n Mendes, is currently at work. I called our three kids, Rose, Jake, and Sarah Grace, into the living room. I wanted to talk to them about something.

"Did we do something wrong Daddy?" Sarah Grace asked. I shook my head.

"No, I just have an idea and I want to know what you guys think about it." I said. They nodded.

"What is it?" Rose asked.

"I really want your mother and I to renew our wedding vows on our twenty year wedding anniversary. What do you guys think?" I said and asked. They all smiled and nodded.

"I love it! Would we get to help with the wedding, or no?" Rose asked.

"Of course you guys would get to help. Now, I just need to ask your mother to marry me again. How should I do it?" I asked my kids.

"Well, how did you do it last time?" Sarah Grace asked. I smiled at the memory.

"We were walking along a beach in Maine and the timing just felt right, so I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me." I said. The kids smiled.

"Well, what if we all go to Maine and you recreate that?" Rose asked. I thought for a moment before nodding.

"That sounds perfect. I remember what beach it was at too." I said. The kids nodded. Soon, my wife returned home from work.

"Hey there handsome." She said as she came over to give me a kiss. As soon as our lips met, I felt sparks shoot through my body like fireworks, I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, and I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my stomach.

"Hey there gorgeous. I made dinner." I said. She smiled at me and we called the kids down so we could sit at the table and eat.

"So how was everyone's day?" Y/n asked us. I smiled. The kids had been sworn to secrecy about the plan.

"Good. How was yours mom?" Jake asked. Y/n smiled.

"It was good, but it got even better when I came home to my favorite people." She said. My smile widened.

"Hey Mrs. Mendes?" I asked. She looked at me and I saw all of her love for me in her eyes.

"Yes Mr. Mendes?" She asked.

"What do you think of us going up to Maine this weekend? We'll take the kids. It'll be a nice little vacation." I asked and said. Y/n thought for a moment before smiling and nodding.

"Okay. Let's do it." She said. Everyone cheered. That weekend, we packed up the car and headed to Maine. We checked into our hotel rooms.

"Let's go to the beach." I said. Y/n nodded and got a bathing suit on but put shorts and a t-shirt on over it. I smiled when the kids walked into the room. We soon headed to the beach, and Y/n gasped when she realized where we were.

"Oh my gosh. Kids, this is where your father proposed to me." Y/n said.

"Awww." Rose said, and we all smiled. The kids walked a few steps behind Y/n and I on the beach. She interlaced her fingers with mine, and as our hands touched, I felt sparks shoot through me, yet I felt safe and warm at the same time.

"This is nice. Do you remember that day?" Y/n asked. I smiled and nodded.

"Of course. I hadn't been planning to propose but the moment just felt right, so I got down on one knee." I said. Y/n smiled and nodded.

"We're almost at the spot that you proposed at." Y/n said. I smiled. When we got to the spot, I stopped walking. Y/n gave me a funny look, just like she had done the first time that I proposed to her. I then got down on one knee and her eyes widened. I took her hands in mine.

"Y/n Y/m/n Mendes, the first time I did this, I said your maiden name, and not Mendes, but this time around I get to say Mendes. We've been married for nineteen years, and they've been the best nineteen years of my life. Everyday with you is amazing and my love for you grows more and more each day. You've given me the gift of becoming a father, and I couldn't be more thankful for that. I want to continue to wake up to you every morning and spend the rest of my life with you. I want to renew our vows on our twenty year anniversary. I don't have a ring on me because you're wearing it, but will you continue to make me the happiest man alive, and marry me again?" I asked. Y/n nodded her head as she cried.

"Yes, yes, a million times yes, Shawn!" She said. I stood up, gently grabbed her face, and kissed her. We pulled away and leaned our foreheads together.

"I love you." I said.

"I love you too." She said. She then turned to the kids who had taken pictures and videos of the whole thing. "Were you guys in on this?"

"Yup!" Jake said. Y/n and I hugged them. Rose had tears in her eyes.

"Why are you crying my Rosie girl?" I asked.

"It was just so beautiful and you guys are so in love and you're the best parents ever." Rose said. I pulled her in for a hug and then Y/n hugged her too. Y/n then turned to me.

"Should we watch the sunset again just like we did after we got engaged the first time?" Y/n asked and I nodded.

"Do you guys want to watch the sunset?" I asked the kids. They nodded and the five of us put our arms around each and watched the sunset. When we got back to the hotel, Y/n and I said good night to the kids and then went to our own room. She laid down on the bed.

"I'm engaged again!" She cheered. I laughed and crawled over to her.

"Yup. Sorry I don't have a ring but -" I started before my wife interrupted.

"Shawn stop, I'm already wearing one and it's perfect. Don't worry baby." She said. I smiled at her, kissed her forehead, and then we got under the covers, cuddled up to each other, and fell asleep. The next morning I woke up without her in my arms. I looked out at our balcony and she was standing there, leaning against the railing. I got out of bed and walked out there. I wrapped my arms around her from behind and she jumped a little since she hadn't been expecting this.

"Shhh baby girl, it's just me." I said, and that helped her relax into my touch. She then turned around and smiled at me.

"We're going to get married again." She said. I smiled at her.

"Yup. We are." I said.

"I wonder if my wedding dress still fits me. If it does, do you think that it would be okay if I wore it again?" She asked. I nodded.

"Of course. I would love to see you in it again. So obviously the wedding will be on May twenty third, right?" I asked. Y/n nodded.

"Yup. Oh my gosh, twenty years of marriage to the most amazing man." She said, causing me to blush. I wrapped my arms around her waist and she wrapped her arms around my shoulders as I buried my face in her neck and placed gentle kisses there.

"Does this mean that we get another honeymoon?" I asked. Y/n ran her fingers through my hair as she nodded.

"Yup. Should we go back to Hawaii for it?" She asked. I nodded my head against her neck.

"Yeah. Let's go see if the kids are up and then we can get some breakfast." I said as I pulled away. Y/n interlaced our fingers and we texted Rose asking if they were all up. She texted back and said yes, and that they were hungry. We told her that we would all meet in the lobby in five minutes. Y/n and I then got dressed.

"Do you think that you're going to cry when you see me walking down the aisle just like you did last time?" She asked. I chuckled and nodded.

"Probably. I can't wait babe. But maybe we shouldn't have the wedding be as big as last time, you know? Should we make it more intimate this time?" I asked. She thought for a moment before nodding.

"Yeah. Let's just invite close friends and family. Does that sound good?" She asked. I nodded and we then went down to the lobby where the kids were already waiting for us. We got some food and sat down.

"So your mother and I are thinking of just having close friends and family at our second wedding. What do you guys think?" I asked the kids. They nodded.

"Okay." They all said. I smiled at my wife. We had a nice time in Maine, but we were soon back to Boston to plan the wedding. Y/n called her parents and I called mine to tell them all the news. They were happy for us - again.

Your point of view

I walked into my closet and went to the back of it. I lightly grabbed the white, flowery and flowy dress that I had picked out a little over nineteen years ago, and smiled. I get to wear it again - if it fits. I texted my oldest daughter, Rose, and asked her to come into my closet. She soon came in.

"Hey Mom." She said.

"Hi sweetie. I want to see if my old wedding dress still fits me, because if it does, I'm going to wear it again for this second wedding. Would you like to help me put it on?" I asked. Rose smiled and nodded.

"Of course." She said. We then took it off the hanger and she helped me put it on. I gasped when it was on all of the way. Rose zipped me up.

"It fits absolutely perfectly. Oh my gosh." I said as I looked at myself. Rose smiled.

"You look beautiful Mom." She said. I smiled and turned to hug her.

"Thank you." I said. We then took the wedding dress off and hung it back up. I ran downstairs and jumped onto the couch, where Shawn was sitting.

"What's up my silly girl?" He asked.

"I just tried on my wedding dress and it fits perfectly." I said with a smile. Shawn smiled a really big smile at me.

"That's great! So you're going to wear it again?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yup. Oh Shawn I can't wait." I said. Shawn pulled me onto his lap.

"I know my love. I can't wait either. Where should we have the wedding?" Shawn asked. I thought for a moment.

"Well, should we make up the guest list and then decide where we want the wedding depending on how big the guest list is?" I asked. Shawn nodded and kissed my cheek.

"Sure." He said. We then went to the dining room table and made a list of who we wanted at our wedding. We wrote down family members first, the kids being at the top of the list, and then our friends, which included Teddy Geiger, Andrew Gertler, Geoff Warburton, Brian Craigan, Camila Cabello, and some of my friends, Grace, Avery, Anna, Molly, Chelsea, and of course there were others on our guest list. Okay, so maybe the guest list wasn't tiny, but it was our loved ones. We soon hired a wedding planner, just like we had the first time.

Next, Shawn and I decided to get married again at the Lyman Estate in Waltham, Massachusetts. It's a historic mansion on thirty-seven acres. We would obviously have the reception in the ballroom, and decided that we would have the ceremony in the oval parlor of the mansion. There were rooms upstairs where Shawn and I could get ready.

Shawn and I sent out the invitations and basically everyone RSVP'd back, saying yes. Shawn and I also went taste testing and decided on the same thing that we did for our first wedding: marble cake. I asked my best friend, Grace, to be my maid of honor, well, this time she would be the matron of honor since she had also gotten married, and Rose was my maid of honor, while Sarah was one of the bridesmaids. Jake was one of Shawn's groomsmen. Shawn and I went with the same color theme that we had before: white, blue, and gray.

Soon, it was May twenty third, the day of the wedding. Rose and I were getting our hair done when there was a knock at the door. Grace answered it.

"Delivery for Mrs. Mendes who's about to become Mrs. Mendes again." Andrew, Shawn's manager said as he handed me a Dunkin Donuts iced coffee. I laughed.

"Thank you." I said as I took a sip. French Vanilla flavored, my favorite.

"It's not from me, it's from your husband. He said that you can't survive the mornings without your coffee, so he ran out and bought this for you. Of course, he isn't allowed to see the bride, so I had to deliver it." Andrew said.

"Well thank you for delivering it and please thank him for me." I said.

"I will. You know, with the way he's acting, you would think that this is his first time getting married to you." Andrew said.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"He's antsy. He just wants to see you walk down the aisle. For some reason he's worried that you're going to leave him at the altar and then divorce him." Andrew said. My jaw dropped and I turned to look at my mom.

"Am I allowed to call him?" I asked. She thought for a moment before nodding.

"Yes. Go ahead." She said. I then went into the bathroom and shut the door so I could talk to him privately. He picked up pretty quickly.

"Hey beautiful." He said, and I could tell that he was trying to hide his nerves.

"Hey handsome. Andrew just told me that you're nervous that I'm going to leave you at the altar and then divorce you. Is that true?" I asked. I heard Shawn sigh.

"Yeah. I don't know why I feel so damn nervous." Shawn said.

"Listen to me baby: I would never leave you at the altar and I would never divorce you. I'm going to see you in that oval parlor, and we're going to renew our vows, and it's going to be beautiful, just like it was last time. Okay?" I said and asked.

"Okay. You know, the last time we got married, it was me calming you down. Now the tables have turned." Shawn said with a chuckle. I laughed.

"Yup. Thank you for the coffee by the way." I said with a smile.

"You're welcome. I know that you need your coffee to function, and I thought that getting you the same thing that you were drinking when we first met would be perfect." Shawn said.

"It was. I have to finish getting ready. I'll see you in a little bit, okay?" I asked.

"Okay darling. I love you." He said. My smile widened.

"I love you too." I said. We then hung up and I finished getting ready. Soon, I was walking down the aisle again, and Shawn cried when he saw me, just like he did the first time. Then, it was time for Shawn to say his vows, and he held my hands in his as he spoke.

"Y/n, twenty years ago today we got married, and that was one of the best days of my life. You're my best friend, my rock, my soulmate, my biggest fan, my everything. I have no clue what I would do without you. When I'm upset, or anxious, or sad, or stressed, or basically just in a bad mood, you know how to comfort me and get me to feel better. I have made me a father three times, and I can't thank you enough for that. You and the kids are my muse, my motivation, my inspirations, my everything. I love you so much Y/n, and I can't wait to continue our journey of love." Shawn said. I wiped away some tears, and then I said my vows.

"Shawn, twenty years ago today, we celebrated our love for each other and officially became husband and wife. These past twenty years of marriage and twenty four years of being together have been the best years of my life. You are my best friend, my soulmate, my protector, my rock, my everything. You are the best husband that anyone could ever ask for, and you are the most amazing father to our children. You helped to make me become a mother and I can never thank you enough for our three miracles. With everything that I do, I want to please you and make you happy. You and the kids are the best things to have ever happened to me. Thank you for asking me to marry you again. I love you." I said. Shawn wiped away a few of his own tears.

"By the power invested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife - again. Shawn, you may kiss your bride." The officiator said. Shawn immediately put his lips on mine and I felt all of those amazing feelings all over again, the heart racing, the sparks, the butterflies, everything. Shawn and I walked back down the aisle and waited outside of the ballroom as our guests got seated. We then heard the DJ announce us.

"Introducing, for the second time, Mr. and Mrs. Shawn Mendes!" The DJ said, and Shawn and I walked in. Ed Sheeran was already up on stage and Shawn and I had our first dance (for the second time) to his song Thinking Out Loud. Shawn and I kept whispering to each other as we danced.

"You look absolutely stunning." Shawn whispered in my ear, causing me to blush.

"Thank you. You look quite handsome." I said. Shawn kissed my cheek and then twirled me before pulling me back to him.

"Do you think that the girls will like the surprise that I have for them?" Shawn asked. I nodded my head against his shoulder.

"Yeah. It's going to be beautiful." I said. Soon, the song came to an end, and Shawn dipped me, causing me to giggle. He then got up onstage and thanked Ed and then started talking into the microphone. I went and stood beside the kids.

"Um, before we all go onto the dance floor, I have a surprise for my two daughters, Rose and Sarah Grace. You two, and your brother, helped to put this wedding together and your mother and I couldn't be more grateful for that. So, Rose, Sarah Grace, would you two like to take turns dancing with your dear old dad?" Shawn asked. I looked at the girls and they nodded at their father before going out to the dance floor. The DJ started to play The Girl You Think I Am by Carrie Underwood as Rose began to dance with Shawn. After a little bit, Sarah started to dance with Shawn, and it was beautiful. I felt someone put the arm around my shoulders and looked over to see that it was my seventeen year old son, Jake.

"You look beautiful Mom, and this day has been amazing." Jake said. I smiled at him.

"Oh, my sweet boy, thank you, but like your father just said, we're so grateful for you and your sisters. Not just for helping with the wedding, but in general too. I love you honey." I said. Jake smiled at me.

"I love you too Mom. Um, do I get to dance with you at some point?" Jake asked. I smiled and nodded, and at one point Jake and I danced. It was a very nice day, and that night Shawn and I left for Hawaii for our second honeymoon, and it was amazing. I'm so lucky to have Shawn, Rose, Jake, and Sarah. I loved my second wedding.
