18. "Come to bed" and Hospital

My boyfriend of three years, singer and songwriter Shawn Mendes, is currently working on lyrics while I'm laying in bed waiting for him. He said that he would be in bed with me soon. That was half an hour ago, and it's eleven o'clock at night. I don't want him staying up too late because he needs his rest. I tried to fall asleep but I couldn't because his arms were not around me. I waited another half hour before getting up.

My feet padded across the floor and down the hall to Shawn's office. The door was already opened a crack and I could see Shawn writing something down on a piece of paper. He works hard and sometimes he pushes himself too far, causing him to be exhausted. I opened the door a little more, enough so I could step into the room, walked over to Shawn, and put my arms around him from behind.

"Honey, it's almost midnight. Come to bed." I said. Shawn kissed my skin before turning back to the paper that he was writing on.

"I can't." Shawn said.

"Why not?" I asked.

"Baby, I got these lyrics in my head, I have to get them out. I'll be in bed in a little bit, just go to bed hun." Shawn said.

"Shawn you said you would be in bed in a little bit an hour ago." I said. Shawn shrugged.

"Sorry Y/n. I just need to get these words out." Shawn said. I unwrapped my arms from around him and looked at the extra chair that was in his office. Two can play at this I'm-staying-awake game. I sat down in the chair and looked at him. He looked up at me. "What are you doing? Go to bed darling." Shawn asked and said.

"I'm not going to bed until you go to bed." I said. Shawn sighed and looked at his work.

"Just give me ten minutes." Shawn said, looking at me. I nodded and leaned forward to kiss his cheek. He smiled at me.

"Okay." I said. Fast forward to ten minutes later, and Shawn was still working. "Shawn it's been ten minutes." I said.

"I know, just give me five more." Shawn said.

"Come on honey, I'm tired and you must be tired too." I said.

"I am tired, but I just need some more time. Go to bed if you're tired." Shawn said. I could tell his frustration was rising. I wasn't trying to annoy or frustrate him or anything, I was just trying to make sure he didn't wear himself out. He's my boyfriend, and I care about him immensely. I just want him to take care of himself.

"Am I annoying you? I'm sorry if I am." I asked and said.

"You're annoying me a little, yes." Shawn said. I wasn't expecting him to say that. Yes I had asked him if I was annoying him, but I was expecting him to say that I wasn't.

"Sorry. I'll leave you alone." I said, tears brimming my eyes as I got up to walk out.

"Thank you." Shawn said, not even looking at me. I went to bed and silently cried. I didn't mean to annoy him, and I felt really bad. After another half hour, I fell asleep. The next morning I woke up to an empty bed. The light was still on in Shawn's office. I walked down the hall and walked into his office.

"Shawn have you been working all night long?" I asked. Shawn nodded.

"Needed to get these words out. Could you shut the door please?" Shawn said and asked. I nodded.

"With me in or out of the room?" I asked.

"Out." He said. I nodded, not trusting myself to speak or else I would cry. I stepped out of the room, shut the door, and went downstairs. I decided to make breakfast for him and I. After I finished making him an omelette, I went back upstairs and into his office.

"I made you breakfast." I said.

"Thanks." Shawn said.

"It's on the table downstairs for when you want it." I said, ready to walk out of the room.

"I think I'll grab it and bring it up here." Shawn said.

"Shawn, that's enough. You're pushing yourself too much and you need to give yourself a break." I said, crossing my arms across my chest. Shawn looked up at me from his seat.

"Y/n, I need to work on this so I can bring money in. I have a job, you do know that, right?" Shawn asked.

"Yes, I know that, but you're working yourself too hard." I said. Shawn shook his head and went back to his work. I sighed.

"Can you please get off my back and go do something?" Shawn asked.

"Shawn I'm trying to help you. I'm trying to take care of you." I said.

"And I thank you for that, but I don't need you to do that." Shawn said. I left the room, grabbed my keys, and left.

Shawn's point of view

I went downstairs, grabbed my omelette, and went back upstairs to work. My girlfriend left. I'm not quite sure of where she went, but I trust her. I was eating my omelette in peace when my phone rang.

"Hello?" I asked.

"Is this Mr. Mendes?" A female asked me.

"Yes." I said.

"Hi, I'm Dr. Collins with (local hospital name). We regret to inform you that your girlfriend Y/n was in a car accident. She's okay, but she has a broken leg and a concussion." She said.

"I'll be right there." I said. I called Y/n's mom and dad and let them know that my precious girl was in the hospital, and they said that they would meet me there. I practically sped to the hospital. When I got there, my lovely girlfriend was sleeping. I sat down next to her in the uncomfortable chair. She soon stirred, looked at me, and looked away. "Did I do something wrong?" I asked.

"Are my parents here, Shawn?" She asked. I nodded.

"They're outside." I said.

"Can you grab my mom please?" She asked. I nodded again.

"Sure." I said. I walked and told her mom that Y/n wanted her.

"Hi Shawn." Y/n's dad said.

"Hi. I think Y/n is mad at me." I said.

"Why?" He asked.

"She saw me and looked away. She doesn't seem to want to talk to me." I said. Y/n's dad shrugged.

"She's probably fine." He said. Y/n's mom walked out.

"Is she mad at me?" I asked Y/m/n. She nodded. "Why?" I asked.

"Because she was trying to help you and you wouldn't let her. You wouldn't go to bed and you told her that she was annoying you. She was just trying to help you but you told her to get off your back." Y/m/n said. I started to cry and rushed into my girlfriend's room.

"I'm so sorry," I said to Y/n. "I didn't mean to do this to you."

"I was just trying to be a good girlfriend Shawn." She said. I nodded.

"I know. I should've treated you better. You're the best girlfriend that anyone could ever ask for." I said. She nodded. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry." I kept saying as I cried. Y/n wiped my tears away.

"It's okay. You just... you hurt my feelings. I needed to go for a drive, and then some guy hit me with his car." She said.

"I feel like I did this to you." I said.

"You didn't." She said. I looked at her.

"You're so beautiful." I said. She blushed.

"Thank you." She said.

"I'm sorry baby. Do you forgive me?" I asked. She nodded.

"I forgive you. I love you." Y/n said. I smiled and leaned forward to kiss her forehead. She smiled.

"I love you too, my sweet, sweet, precious girl." I said. Y/n blushed again, causing me to chuckle. The doctor walked in.

"Hi Dr. Collins. When can I take her home?" I said and asked. Dr. Collins looked at me.

"You can take her home tomorrow. We're going to keep her overnight due to the concussion." She said. I nodded.

"Can I stay with her overnight?" I asked. Dr. Collins nodded.

"If she wants you to." She said. I looked at my girlfriend. She reached out for my hand and I gently took hers in mine.

"I want you to stay with me." Y/n said. I smiled. The next day I was able to take my precious girlfriend home. I carried her up the stairs and laid her down.

"Do you want me to lay with you?" I asked. She nodded.

"Yes please. You need rest too." She said.

"Even when you're hurting you're looking out for me. Have I ever told you how amazing you are?" I said and asked. Y/n giggled.

"You say it a lot, so yeah." She said. I climbed into bed with her, cuddled up to her, and kissed her forehead.

"I love you." I said.

"I love you too. No more late nights Shawn." She said. I shook my head.

"No more late nights. I promise." I said, and with that, we fell asleep.
