18 - Peter: Last August

Peter almost tripped over his own feet when he saw Evan leaving Megan's house. "Hey," he said.

"Oh, hey, man."

"Looks like you had a fun night."

Peter ran off. He couldn't believe that Megan had slept with Evan, the bartender. He was a nice guy and good looking, Peter supposed, if you like that type. Still as far as he knew Megan had dated no one.

Peter had met Evan at the beginning of the summer. He didn't go out much, but when he did, he usually waited until the twins were in bed. He liked to walk down the beach and get a drink at The Beach House. Sometimes he ran into people he knew, other times he sat at the bar alone. The first time he sat at the bar, he and Evan ended up talking.

Evan told him how he traveled around with a girl for a long time, but she scored a dream job in the Bahamas. "I'm flying solo until we end up the same place again. I'm not looking, but if someone special sits at my bar, I might just go for it."

"I hear you. I'm done with women. I tried to fill the void my divorce left with women, but I just felt lonelier. I'm just focusing on my kids."

"That'll work for a while. We'll both be looking for it before summer is over."

"We'll see. Thanks for the drink, Evan. I'll be around."

Peter sat at the bar a few more times. One night in August, he came in and Evan said, "She came in."

"Who? The one from the Bahamas."

"No, someone special. I knew as soon as I saw her. I'm seeing her again tonight." He had a big smile.

Peter thought he looked like a guy who having sex. Good for him.

Peter couldn't believe that Evan had been talking about Megan. He suddenly felt very possessive, like Nick when Sophie touched his special toy action figure. The problem was Megan wasn't a toy, and she really wasn't his. She hadn't been for a long time. Oh shit, he thought, Megan, his Meg, was sleeping with Evan. She should be sleeping with him. They should still be a family. She should love him, like he loved her and always would.

He sat on the beach for a while trying to deal with this new knowledge. Slowly he walked down the beach to the beautiful house that had become his second home. He remembered the first time he saw it. He was the scared, poor kid who didn't belong, but no one seemed to notice. They embraced him from the very beginning. They've been taking care of him for a long time.

Walking in, his babies were in the kitchen eating cereal. Except they weren't babies anymore and every day Soph looked more and more like her mother. Some days it just made it hard, like when she looked up at him and smiled the biggest smile ever. "Hi Daddy. We missed you."

"I was just on my run, Soph." He kissed her forehead and moved on to Nick's.

"Daddy!"

"I will do it and you'll like it. You're too young to be too cool for your dad."

"You went for a long run," Marie commented.

"Oh, I stopped on the beach for a few minutes. It's peaceful this time of day." He tried to sound cheery.

"Is something wrong? You seem off."

"No, I'm fine. If it's alright with you, I'll go jump in the shower."

"Go the three of us are just fine."

It wasn't until he was under the hot water that he let it all go. He hadn't felt this sad and alone in a long time. By the time he had showered, he had a new resolve. He would win her back no matter how long it took. The first step was to ignore what he saw. If he let her know it affected him, she may get angry. She angered easily when he was around. The next step was to wait his time, because he knew that Evan was leaving in October and he would be ready to comfort her, if need be.

There was one huge flaw in his plan and that was the fact that he could never get her back until they talked about the past. She adamantly refused to discuss it with anyone. He knew that she had never even told her best friend, Kristi. She would never forgive him, if they couldn't talk about it.

Clean and smiling, he burst into the family room where his children were watching cartoons and said in a loud, cheerful voice, "Okay gang, what are we going to do today?"
