I: Father to Son
Yes, everybody knew Freddie Mercury. And yes, everybody admired Freddie Mercury.
Yes, Brian was no exception... But he was kind of skeptical, and all because of the war.
His beloved father sacrificed his sanity so that Brian stayed home safe with his mother while he went to war on the South.
Brian stared at the ceiling, with his eyes on his chest, breathing with difficulty while his eyes filled with tears.
Harold May was the best father, husband and friend there was on Rhye, and when he went to the South, Brian became the head of the family(consisting on his mother, Ruth, and him), and started teaching at the local school just like his father did while his mother sew and sew waiting for her husband... But when Harold came back...
He wasn't the same. Three years had gone by and he was almost unconscious on the back of a horse ridden by a blonde stranger.
The first days he barely talked or did anything besides watching absently the window and trying to sleep... Then, Ruth got sick, and Harold absolutely lost it.
He would sometimes talk to Brian about his time on the South, and that's what Brian would hold to. He talked a lot about Roger, who was a very exceptional man who had a heart as gold as his hair and how he helped him to get out of the battlefield with Freddie.
And so, Freddie was a whole other subject for his father, and jealousy grew inside Brian every time he thought or heard about the man, for he was everything his father wanted on a son: brave, funny, smart, handsome... And maybe the most important part: he was a great wizard.
Harold May was a great wizard too, maybe the best of the East, and so he thought his only son would continue the legacy... But Brian hadn't shown a single bit of magic, he was a completely (boring) human.
Freddie, on the other hand, was known for being the most powerful mind manipulator on the battlefield, and so he won every time he stepped in one. And his father was very proud of him.
Ruth died three months after his husband returned, and Brian couldn't live anymore in a house full of screams and cries and pleas, and was sure going mad himself... But then it all stopped.
His father had done an ultimate enchantment, and became a single white rose one morning, the same as his mother, and he planted them near the river.
Alone, he sold his house to move to another village, and was leaving home when he found the blond man lying unconscious on the ground. He didn't accept his hospitality once, but this time he rode unto his new life with Roger Taylor drooling his cape on the back of his horse.
When he found a new house, Roger immediately decided to get a job to pay for Brian's hospitality.
Now, a year and a half later, the only figment of his old life was his guitar... And maybe it was the most important one.
His father and he built it ten years ago, and his father said that when the time came, Brian would do whatever he wanted with it because it had magic pouring from the chords. With 16 years, Brian truly believed he could do a simple enchantment... But he couldn't, and now it was just a reminder of his boring life.
It was silently watching him on his closet, and Brian hadn't seen it since he hid it there to be safe. His new village was against wizardry, and they would burn him if they knew of its magical abilities... Even if Brian didn't know them.
Then, it hit him: Freddie probably could. And if he could, then Brian would have completed his father wish... And maybe even make him proud.
When Brian came out of the room that morning, he almost tripped on Roger.
"You're awake?" Roger stared at him with confusion but then started talking firmly. "I wanted to thank you for your hospitality and friendship; I will try to write when I make it to Rhye and send more money to pay for..."
"Stop it there, Rog" Brian interrupted, with a kind smile on his face. "There's nothing to worry about, I'm going with you."
Roger had his mouth hanged open, and his first reaction after that was to softly put a hand up his shoulder. "Bri, you don't have to..."
"I and my guitar will go, that's been decided, and we better leave now..." the curly haired man shook his head and quickly started walking towards the door.
"You'll make him proud, mate."
"You came! See, Deaky, I told you!" Freddie nearly shouted when he saw the two man arriving on a horse. "Get your blond butt here, Roggie, we have a brand new horse for you!"
"I'll pay for you all, just wait until we get to Rhye..." Roger said while descending Brian's horse. "Your loyalty will be rewarded."
Brian didn't know Roger was that formal, but maybe it was an aspect of his personality he wasn't prone to show with his own housemate.
"Oh, how cute you are, your Highness! It's our pleasure!" Freddie said between laughs and then winked to Brian. "You came, Curls! And your guitar too!"
His cocky smile was giving Brian a bad feeling of all this, especially when combined with 'Deaky's mortified glance... But he just stared at Freddie's brown eyes and wondered what his life and mind was like.
Did he have a preoccupied mother? Siblings to fight for?
Did he want to continue the word that goes from Father to Son?
"It's called Red Special."
