Chapter 16
When Caitlin got home from the party, she found her fiance waiting for her.
"Where's Kayla?" Caitlin asked.
"She's sleeping. I put her to bed a little early tonight because I think it's time we talk about what happened at Barry and Iris's engagement party. Including how Crystal has powers and how nearly everyone knew exactly who that guy in yellow was." Ronnie said and Caitlin sighed, since she'd been hoping to put this conversation off for as long as possible.
"Ronnie, please, I don't want to talk about this right now." Caitlin said as she put her bag down.
"No Cait, I can tell that whatever it is, it's been bugging you and don't deny it, ever since he showed up, every time you look at me, it's like you see a dead man walking." Ronnie said, since he needed to get to the bottom of whatever was bothering Caitlin.
"Ronnie please." Caitlin said.
"I heard Barry shout that this universe is not the original one, I think I should know about what's going on." Ronnie said.
"You're not going to drop this are you?" Caitlin asked.
"Would you in my position?" Ronnie asked, giving Caitlin a look.
"Fine, sit down." Caitlin said, gesturing to the couch and Ronnie nodded as they sat down.
"Cait, we live in a world full of metahumans and aliens. Whatever it is, I think I can handle it." Ronnie said.
"Yeah, keep telling yourself that." Caitlin said as she tried to figure out where to begin.
"So?" Ronnie asked as Caitlin looked at Kayla's bedroom door to make sure that the little girl had not snuck out for a late night snack.
"What Barry said was true. This world, this entire reality, is not the original one. That world was destroyed." Caitlin said.
"Okay. Gonna need more information." Ronnie said.
"I'm getting there, but I think it will be easier if I start from the very beginning, which is with Barry." Caitlin said.
"Meaning?" Ronnie asked.
"You've only known Barry for a few weeks since he woke up from his coma, but I've known him for nearly 6 years. Hell, I was the maid of honor at his wedding the first time around." Caitlin said.
"Wait, what?" Ronnie asked as Caitlin did her best to explain the whole Crisis thing to him.
"Okay, so you've actually got knowledge about what's going to happen in the future?" Ronnie asked.
"Not exactly. I remember how things played out in the old reality, since that is in my past, but I have no way of knowing if those things will still happen in my future on this new Earth." Caitlin said.
"So, why do you remember when I don't?" Ronnie asked.
"Because Barry has a powerful friend with mind tricks." Caitlin said.
"Who else remembers?" Ronnie asked.
"In Central City, that would be me, Barry, Iris, Cisco, Joe and Cecille." Caitlin said.
"Why didn't you tell me or have that guy give me my memories of the old reality, since I'm guessing that the reason you've been looking at me like a dead man walking is because I died in Crisis?" Ronnie asked as Caitlin took a deep breath.
"No. I died in Crisis. You were already dead before that point." Caitlin said.
"What?" Ronnie asked.
"Yeah, that's why I didn't want to talk about this. I didn't want to remember losing you again." Caitlin said.
"Again?" Ronnie asked.
"I thought you died once before your actual death. You were at Star Labs the night of the accelerator explosion, so I thought that you were vaporized by the explosion. But what actually happened was much weirder." Caitlin said.
"How so?" Ronnie asked.
"You were merged with this professor, Martin Stein and you two became this superhero called Firestorm. For some reason you didn't in this reality and I am grateful for it." Caitlin said.
"So I was a superhero?" Ronnie asked.
"Half of one anyways, since you and Stein could use Firestorm's powers when you merged together. That was complicated." Caitlin said.
"But how did I die?" Ronnie asked.
"In the original reality, the whole reason Thawne set off the accelerator exploded was so that he could turn Barry into a speedster in order to use him to open a time portal to let him return home. Though since he has both his memories and his speed back, I'm guessing that won't be the plan anymore." Caitlin said.
"So, what happened?" Ronnie asked.
"Thawne convinced Barry to open the portal by offering him a chance to save his mom and Barry went for it, but he returned without changing it and he destroyed Thawne's ride home. After that, Thawne threw a tantrum and managed to nearly beat Barry to death." Caitlin said.
"Really, I find that hard to believe." Ronnie said.
"This was back when he first got his speed and even though Thawne's powers were unpredictable, he still had a lot more experience than Barry did at the time. Now, Barry is more than a match for Thawne, especially now. But back then, we couldn't stop him and the longer the time portal remained open, the more we risked blowing a hole in space time. It ended with Barry nearly being killed and Thawne only being stopped by being erased from existence." Caitlin said.
"What?" Ronnie asked, trying to wrap his head around that.
"I need a minute." Caitlin said, since this was a difficult topic for her, for all members of Team Flash.
"What's wrong?" Ronnie asked.
"Sorry, it's just, the price to beat Thawne the first time called for a big sacrifice. In order to stop Thawne, a close friend of the team's, Iris's former fiance in fact, Eddie Thawne, who was Eobard Thawne's ancestor, committed suicide in front of all of us, by shooting himself in the chest. It erased Thawne from existence, or at least we thought it did, but it beat him. Don't ask." Caitlin said, not wanting to get into things about that with him, especially since they were getting to the hardest part of the story.
"Okay. But Cait, what's wrong." Ronnie asked and Caitlin sighed.
"The portal stayed open for too long and it created a singularity that would've destroyed the entire planet. Barry did what he could stop it, running inside it and trying to at least slow it down, but in the end, the only to way to stop it was to merge the inner and outer horizons at the same time, which required you and Stein to merge, fly up into the singularity and then you separated and while it worked in stopping the singularity, Stein was the only one Barry was able to save. You died only a few hours after we got married." Caitlin said and now Ronnie understood why Caitlin hadn't wanted to get into this with him.
"Cait, I can't even imagine how hard that must've been for you, but I'm here now and I'm not going anywhere. Besides, I don't even have powers." Ronnie said.
"I know, but I can't help but worry." Caitlin said.
"I understand that, but you do know that if I was in a position where I had to choose between saving my life and saving the world, especially you and Kayla, I'd take it." Ronnie said.
"I know and that's just one of the reasons I love you. But luckily, since you don't have powers, you'll never find yourself in that position again, which means that I won't have to deal with any of the guys I tried dating after you died." Caitlin said and Ronnie grinned.
"Let me guess, they were losers compared to me?" Ronnie asked.
"One of them pretended to be a friend only to steal Barry's speed, take me prisoner, nearly destroy the city and then killed Barry's dad and then the other one, while not evil, was honestly like Hartley, though he was possessed by another speedster." Caitlin said.
"So I'm still the crown jewel of your relationships?" Ronnie asked with a grin, causing Caitlin to smack him, but she was smiling.
"What can I say, you're one of a kind." Caitlin said.
"Why don't you catch me up on everything else I missed." Ronnie said.
"Fine, but you better go put on some coffee, since this is going to take awhile." Caitlin said, wondering how she was going to explain the whole situation between her and Frost in the old reality.
