Chapter 2

Light shined in through the roots of the trees dappling Mist's silver pelt. She could feel the warm body of her sleeping sister next to her. Outside she heard voices. Have the strange cats come back? she wondered. But no, these were different voices. " I don't understand. " a soft whispery voice of a she-cat said, "Starclan said we should come here. They said it has to do with the prophecy. But there's nothing here but the scent of rouges."     A gruff voice responded, "I'm not sure either, Cherryshade, but I do know one thing. Starclan always has a purpose, and if they sent us here, looking for the prophecy, then they will give us something." "Still Stormstrike, this place seems pretty empty." Mist wanted to open her mouth, but something held her back. She was sure that the cats they were talking about were the same ones in her dreams, but she remembered something Ashnose had said. "Stay where you are, kit, and rest well, for tomorrow your entire life will change." The thing was, no matter how much she disliked her life now, she knew change wasn't always good. Gently she covered Frost's mouth with her tail and prodded her awake with a paw. Frost had grown a lot in the past three moons. Mist had given her much of the prey she caught after they were left on there own, and made sure that Sheep had not denied her any meals for the two moons they lived with her. Slowly Frost rose, and would have groaned at her if not for the tail clamped over her mouth. Many moments pasted and the cats were still out there, occasionally muttering about Starclan and Prophecies, and personally, Mist thought they were completely insane.

The cats were just starting to talk about leaving when the she-cat broke of in the middle of saying, "We won't find anything today. I honestly thought that we would-.... Stormstrike, do you see that?" she said her voice slower than a snail when compared to Mist's heartbeat, her pulse raising with nerves more by the second. Cherryshade had just happened to do another survey with her eyes around the area as she spoke when she saw something. Through the thick bracken that surrounded the trees, she saw a flash of white. His eyes followed hers towards the tree, and suddenly they hardened as he saw the white fur withdraw deeper into the darkness of the hollow. There's no way out! Why didn't I realize that yesterday? How could I be so stupid? she realized. "Rouge." he growled as he padded forward towards the tree. I'm going to be sick....she thought. Suddenly he tore the bracken with his claws and glared down at them. But the second he realized they were kits his eyes softened. "Cherryshade. Come here." he said. She let out a gasp as she saw the two weak kits that crouched before them in fear, their sides quickly growing and shrinking as they hyperventilated, and their eyes darting from him to her nervously. "Where is your mother?" she asked, her voice even quieter than before. Mist was to scared to do anything more than shake her head. "Stormstrike, we need to get them back to camp." she said, and he nodded in agreement as he picked Frost up by the scruff. Cherryshade did the same with Mist. Instinctively going limp, Mist could not fight back as the she-cat took her deeper into the forest than she had ever gone before.

By the time they had stopped walking, the sun was sinking in the sky. Frost had fallen asleep, but Mist couldn't. Gleams of green, blue, and amber eyes shined in the dark. She wanted to yowl out in fear and run back to the two-leg place. It may have been dangerous, but at least there she had a family. A large brown and black tom began padding towards them. "I guess you didn't find what you were looking for. But you did find something else." he said, staring at the two she-kits. "Maybe we didn't find what we were looking for,Nettlestar, we can't be sure. The prophecy wasn't necessarily clear. As for now, these kits need rest and food. I don't want anyone crowding them" First good news I've heard all day. Mist thought as she was carried inCancelto a small den, followed by Stormstrike and Frost. She hadn't realized how tired she was until she was laid into a nest of moss and feathers and quickly feel asleep. She didn't dream that night. When she woke up she found a squirrel beside her, and she quickly ate some of it, as it was the best thing she had smelled in days, but left the other half for Frost. Cautiously she padded over to Frost's nest and prodded her awake. "Frost, wake up." she whispered, "Come eat, but then we must find out why we're here." Frost groggily stood up and padded towards the squirrel the ate the other half without even thinking about it. Mist shook her head. I'm going to have to teach her to be more considerate. It is kind of my fault that she's like this though. When the squirrel was nothing but a pile of bones, Mist and Frost crept out of the den, so close that their pelts were pressed against each other. To their surprise, there were already cats padding around outside, even though it was just at the crack of dawn. They were all walking towards a small ginger and white she-cat. First the she-cat looked at Stormstrike, "Stormstrike, I want you to take Rubbleshade, Sorrelpaw, and Scorchpaw on a hunting patrol." Stormstrike nodded and walked out into the forest, followed by three other cats. Then the ginger and white she-cat turned to a white and gray she-cat that was unfamiliar to Mist, "Willowfeather, I want you to lead a border patrol. Take Twistedwillow, Thistledust, Dawnwish, and Fallingwater." All five of them then padded out of the camp together. Then the ginger and white cat noticed them and bounded over. "Hi, there! You must be the new kits. My name's Amberriver." She spoke so quickly that Mist had a hard time understanding her, and it took a moment for her to decipher it, then a minute longer to find out what to say. Eventually, Frost spoke for her, trying to sound formal, "Greetings, Amberriver. It is a pleasure to meet you. My name is Frost. Me and my sister would like to thank you for the squirrel and the shelter over the night," Mist quickly nodded her agreement as Frost continued, "But we would like to know why we are here, and why you would be so kind to us." Amberriver answered quickly in her rushed voice, "We could never turn down kits in need! And well, to be honest, Cherryshade sees something in you. Something to do with the prophecy." "About that...what is a prophecy?" Mist said. "A prophecy is a message from StarClan. But I fail to see how it could include you. Cherryshade told us we shouldn't share it with you, and while I find it ridiculous, I can't go against her will. She would be furious. Why don't you two run along and meet the other cats. Shadekit will be happy, seeing as though he is the only kit. He was once a rouge, too, you know." Shadekit? No..no it can't be. Mist thought, refusing to get her hopes up. But when she went to the nursery, she was sure her hopes were going to fly out of her chest and to the woods like the moth Frost was so intent on. There, sleeping in the corner of the den, was a kit, no older than four moons old, with a pelt slightly darker than slate. His breathing was slow and steady, letting Mist know that he was still asleep. His form was familier, sturdily built and powerful. But his scent was different. It smelled of the forest and of the strange cats that lived in it. Mist opened her mouth to say something, but no sound came out. How had her brother got here? He had been wanted. The cats of the twoleg place had deemed him worthy of life. He should be with Mama, curled up in the nest still. He would be a trainee by now. Mist thought of the older kits that were three moons old coming home to their families covered in scars. But their eyes had gleamed with pride and the scars weren't deep. Memories could cause deeper scars.

Pushing those memories away she softly padded towards the kit, uncertainty and excitement stirring inside of her. "S-shade?" she whispered. "Is that you?" He yawned as he lay there"Yeah, that's me. Though I prefer the name Shadekit. You're the new rouge kit aren't you. Trust me, you'll fit in fi-" Shadekit's words broke off as he sat up and opened his eyes, realizing who it was. "Mist....you're alive? How? I thought for sure that when you disappeared....I mean, when Mama had said you had to go to the forest I thought a fox would have gotten you...." Mist shook her head, "Red and Dark didn't think we were worthy of life, so they forced Mama to get rid of us. We found a she-cat who took care of us, but one day we made a mistake. Her kit, Robin, was messing with Frost, saying that 'You know you're not my real sister right?' Of course we knew that much, and it didn't really hurt, until Robin went further with the bullying. 'I don't see why you're here, anyways....' she had said, ' Sheep doesn't love you anymore than your own mother did, and even she hardly loved you. Think of it.... she didn't even want you.' I-I got furious. Nobody talked to Frost that way. Nobody could hurt my tiny little sister. I attacked Robin. I didn't even think of it, I just did it. I didn't hurt her too bad, but Sheep told us we had to leave, and that we could never come back." Mist blinked away the tears, trying to stifle her sobs. She had loved Sheep like her own mother, but Sheep didn't love her back. It hurt so bad. "After we left, we found nobody who would love us. We only had each other. The other rouges looked down on our weakness and saw us as nothing but pests. We survived off the crow-food they left. I gave most of my food to Frost. I couldn't let her die...." Mist had forgotten she was speaking to her brother until that moment, and she rubbed her cheek against his, "But it's okay now. We'll leave these cats and find a new home. We'll be a family again, Shade." He backed up, shocked. "Leave the clan? But Mist, they're like family!" "But they're not, Shade. Me and Frost are your family. " "Mist, we're safer here. We could grow up and be warriors. Mist, I don't want to lose you again, but I can't leave the clan....." Mist angrily turned and began to pad out of the den. "I can see where your loyalties lie, Shade. And it's not with your family."
