Church of the Crazy
A/N: Sorry for the wait, but look what @chloe_is_lame made me!! AHHHH I'm literally obsessed with mood boards and having one for my story almost made me cry!!
Cass and 10k seem more aware of me since the storm, which really doesn't bother me much, it's actually kind of nice to know people are worried about me. Although they are going about it in two completely different ways. 10k just seems to give more glances and is typically by my side, the only reason he backs off is when Cass is right next to me.
Cass is much more touchy, when she is next to me she's usually holding my hand. She also will ask me how I'm doing and keeps trying to get me to sleep more, but if the nightmares were bad before the storm, they are 100 times worse now. It's so bad that I've developed serious bags and the rest of the group seems to have noticed as well.
"No Zs in sight." Mack declares and I allow myself to focus on something other than the thoughts running wildly through my head.
Everyone seems so focused on Murphy, who is currently pissing in a field. Mack climbs into the back of the truck with 10k and Addy while I stand in front of 10k, Cassandra loosely holding my hand. Doc, Warren, and Garnett are also standing at the foot of the truck, all of them to my right.
"Anybody else worried about Mr. Sunshine out there?" Doc asks and I glance over at him to see the most serious expression I've ever seen on his usually cheerful face.
Everyone has been worried about Murphy since he apparently shaved every strand of hair off his head except his eyebrows and cuddled with a dead Z during the storm. I might be worried if I cared about the guy, but he isn't worth the anxiety.
"I know. He's looking worse." Garnett agrees from beside me and I turn to look back at the sickly looking man who has been peeing for a ridiculously long time.
"Yeah, he was pretty creepy to start with." Warren chimes in and I nod my head in agreement with her statement.
"Come on, guys. Give him a break. It's the Apocalypse. None of us look our best. It's like one long bad hair day." Addy speaks up in the man's defense and I almost scoff, but instead just make a face.
Cass squeezes my hand slightly so I turn to face her taller form to see she is giving me a questioning look. I smile reassuringly at her and squeeze her hand back to let her know I'm okay. She seems hesitant, but eventually turns back to Murphy and I drop my smile.
"Speaking of hair, what's with all the bald patches?" Mack asks and I squint at Murphy to see the hairless spots I had missed in my earlier notes of his new appearance.
"Maybe that vaccine is like zombie chemo." Cass suggests and I tilt my head to absorb the theory.
"Or maybe that vaccine isn't working." 10k adds and I glance over the group's faces before deciding to speak up.
"Have we considered that it may just be poisoning him to death?" I question and I can tell my question makes Garnett uneasy.
The leader turns to look between me and Murphy, his eyes giving way to the new worry I've planted in his mind. I almost feel bad for suggesting it, but it's something to consider, especially with the weird ashy grey tone to his skin.
Almost like he can hear us talking, which he clearly can't since he's about 15 ft away from us, Murphy turns to look back at us. I meet his gaze with a glare that makes him turn back around. He's still on my shitlist.
"What do you think, Doc?" Garnett asks the trusted older man, hoping for an answer that we all know no one has.
"I've seen Zs look better than him." Doc tells us honestly and I scrunch my nose.
"Week old roadkill looks better than him. Not to mention smells better." I comment and Cass squeezes my hand.
I turn to look at her and she gives me a look. I raise my eyebrows and mouth 'what?' even though I know she wants me to keep my snide comments to myself. 'You know what' she mouths back and I pout at her before looking back at our leader.
Why do I always get chastised? I'm just sharing my thoughts with the group!
"Will he make it to California?" Garnett asks in a soft voice.
"If we haul ass." Doc replies and his serious tone feels strange and unnatural, like Murphy.
I smile at my joke before realizing I probably look crazy to the group and wipe it off my face. I've already got two helicopter parents keeping me on watch, I don't need to make it worse.
"If he goes zombie, we might have to put him down." Garnett sighs and I perk up, but Warren is faster than me in replying.
"Dibs on piking him." She states and I let out a huff.
"I wanted to do it." I grumble under my breath, but the squeeze Cass gives my hand tells me she heard me.
"If he turns, piking him's the least of our problems." Garnett expresses and I frown.
I hate it when Garnett makes good points like that. As much as I dislike Murphy, he's our only hope of saving humanity, or what's left of it anyways. We need his blood, preferably from a living body.
Murphy finally stops his pee break and zips it up before turning to face us all. His eyes avoid mine and from his expression I'm guessing everyone is looking at him. How unnerving that must be, to bad I don't care.
"What?" He asks loud enough we can hear him and Garnett stands a little taller before he addresses the man.
"Pit stop's over. Let's get moving." Garnett calls to not only Murphy, but all of us.
For once, I decide to sit in the actual inside of the truck. Cassandra hot on my heels as I turn towards the back doors, her hand still gripping mine.
"I have a ginormous bladder. Sue me." Murphy grumbles and I glance back at him with a glare.
"I would sue you if I could." I inform him before Cass tugs my hand towards the now open backseat door.
We both stand at the open door waiting for Murphy, so he can get in first. Cassandra prefers window seats, which is just something I've noticed. She is always more tense in the middle.
"Man, I sure could use some of them Kansas City barbecue ribs about now." Doc comments as he hops into the back of the truck, Murphy sliding into the far seat.
I get in next, putting me in the middle as Cass starts to pull herself into the large truck, finally letting go of my hand.
"How bout you, darlin'. You're a big rib eater, aren't you?" Murphy directs the jab towards Cassandra and I punch his thigh hard, a whiney ouch escaping him as Cass sends him a deathly glare from beside me.
"You know I was almost starting to feel sorry for you." She retorts as he rubs his leg with a slight scowl on his face, but he avoids looking at me.
Garnett and Warren are sitting in the front seat, but watching our encounter and both of them look amused at my act of violence. Take that Murphy, mom and dad approve of your pain.
"You look pretty happy for someone who hasn't eaten in two days." Warren comments towards Garnett with an infatuated smile.
"Could be worse." He shrugs with his own puppy love smile.
I bump Cass with my shoulder to direct her attention to the pair in the front seats. They have been like this since the tornado and we've all noticed. I'm pretty sure the last two times they told us they were scouting, they did a quick look around and then made out.
"Really?" Warren questions with a teasing smile, her eyes focused on the smiling man beside her.
"We're still alive, aren't we?" He smiles and Warren laughs, shaking her head.
"You were always a glass half full kinda guy. It's what I love about you." Warren states and I give Cass a wide eyed look at the "L-word" that was just thrown out.
She smiles back at me and I feel like the kids from a parent trap, although I didn't do shit to get them together. That was all them and no way am I gonna steal their credit.
"Actually I'm looking forward to getting some food and a hot shower at Province Town." Garnett comments as I look back towards the pair, biting my lip to try and keep my smile at bay.
"Well don't get your hopes up. We don't even know if this place still exists." Murphy states in his usual pessimistic way and I give him a quick glare.
"Hammond had it marked on his map as a resupply place. And if his contact there is the same Major Williams from my National Guard days, we might actually get some help." Garnett informs him with a pointed look.
One of these days Garnett is gonna snap and punch Murphy. Hopefully I will be alive to witness it, because that will make my apocalypse worth it.
"So we're relying on the map of a dead guy?" Murphy scoffs and I roll my eyes.
"In case you forgot that dead guy was a hero who died protecting you." Warren warns him and he crosses his arms across his chest with a scowl.
"Just because he's dead doesn't make him a hero." Murphy grumbles lowly.
"I wonder what they'll say about you when your dead, probably nothing good." I retort and he turns to give me a glare and I raise my eyebrows in a threatening manner, basically asking if that's really what he wants to do.
"Well I hope Province Town does exist because we're out of just about everything but hope." Garnett tells us and I look away from Murphy.
Maybe if we're lucky they will have real food, I could really use a full stomach. I'm not running on sleep, so I need something to keep me going. I wouldn't tell anyone though, the group has enough on their plates without me adding to it.
With that thought Warren starts the truck and we get moving. I lean my head against the slightly older woman beside me, the sleepiness tugging on the corner of my mind. Too bad I wouldn't dare fall asleep.
After about an hour we made it into a very small town and we can see the fortress known as Province Town, fencing making it clear it is a guarded area. As we get closer I can see some signs and I squint slightly to read them better, finally pulling my head off of Cass's shoulder.
My eyes find the sign at the front of the compound we are rolling up on and my nose scrunches up. Like hell I'm just gonna hand them the means to kill us all! They can't actually expect us to go in like helpless children can they?
My hands must have clenched from anxiety because next thing I know, Cassandra has my hand linked with hers and a comforting smile directed my way. God do I hate how easy I am too read.
"What do you wanna do?" Warren asks our leader as I lean forward in my seat.
"Their town, their rules. Looks like we don't have much of a choice." Garnett sighs before we start moving again, closer this time.
As we near the compound four people, a woman and three men step out with large guns aimed at our truck. Warren comes to a stop and I let go of Cass's hand to grab my crossbow and prep it with an arrow.
A woman points a very large gun at the windshield and if I were a cat, my fur would be raised. I'm getting that weird bad feeling again, something is screaming at me that we need to just keep on traveling, but it's not like I can say that.
"Stop right there! This is a private compound. I'm gonna have to ask you to turn around and go back the way you came." She calls out as Garnett raises his hands up in a surrender motion, stepping out of the car.
"I'm looking for Major Wiliams. Joe Williams." Garnett calls in response and I grip my weapon tighter in my hands.
At the mention of their leaders full name I can tell she seems to relax just the tiniest amount, but I refuse to relax until my team doesn't have guns pointed at them.
"And who are you?" The woman asks, a hint of an attitude to her voice, which makes me scoff at her.
"Who pissed in her cornflakes this morning?" I grumble before Warren turns to give me the 'shut-up' look.
"I'm Sergeant Charles Garnett, Georgia National Guard. We've known each other going back pre-z." He informs the woman who turns to her little group, almost like she expects one of them to confirm or deny this information.
After a moment she seems to make up her mind as she nods, turning back to face Garnett. A hand on my arm suddenly draws my attention and I look over at Cass who seems to be checking in on me. I give her a soft nod before turning back to the action.
"Wait there. Your crew stays in the truck. They try to get out or we see a weapon, we'll fire." The woman warns as two of the men make their way back inside one of the buildings.
"Oh she's gotta be kidding, she thinks she gets to just aim weapons at us and we are just gonna take it?" I grumble as I tighten my grip on my crossbow as Garnett looks back at us before facing the threat again.
Warren glares at me in the rearview mirror, her eyes sending a very stern message, one that has me slouching down in my seat. Stupid mom eye powers.
"Easy everyone. Charlie's got it under control." Warren speaks softly, but I know it's directed at me, my arms crossing across my chest.
"So you're calling him Charlie now?" Murphy asks in his usual condescending tone before Warren's attention turns to him instead of me.
"Yeah, and I'm gonna start calling you my bitch if you don't shut up." She declares in a warning tone and I snort before covering my mouth.
God do I love Warren, she's such a badass. Plus she puts everyone in their place, including Murphy. I'm pretty sure everyone is scared of her, including Garnett.
Motion near the building the men disappeared into catches my attention and I turn in time to see some man come marching out. He walks up next to the woman, who moves over lowering her gun. The two men from before follow after the new guy, their weapons still ready.
"Well holy shit. It's the ghost of Charlie Garnett. Never expected to see you again. At least not alive." The guy, who I'm assuming is Joe Williams, comments as he scans our leader.
"Hey, Joe. Didn't expect to see you again either. Looks like we're both still standing." Garnett retorts and I can't tell if this is friendly or not, it almost seems like a stand off.
"Looks like. Last time I saw you, you were pulling my ass out of a ditch full of Zs." Williams replies.
I glance behind me to see 10k is watching the exchange closely from the bed of the truck, almost as if he knows I'm looking at him, he shifts his focus to me. I stare at him for a moment, his eyes searching mine before we both look away.
"Just returning the favor. How many Zs we kill that day?" Garnett tells him, their conversation seemingly friendly if you forget about the guns aimed at us.
"Not enough." Williams sighs and I can't help but wonder what must have happened that day.
"Do you mind?" Garnett finally asks and Williams turns to look at his mini army.
"Stand down. You're the first person I've seen from before. How the hell you end up here?" Williams begins as he walks closer, an almost accusing tone to his voice.
He better watch himself, major or not, I will kick his ass. No one gets to talk my team like that, unless they want an ass whooping.
"I'm actually on a mission for the government, if you can believe that." Garnett confesses, his arms finally at his sides in a slightly more relaxed manner.
"If it was anybody but you, I wouldn't." Williams replies, his tone still to tense.
"We've come from New York. Haven't eaten in a few days." Garnett expresses and I bite the inside of my cheek.
I don't know if I can sit in this truck and wait much longer. I'm getting antsy and all I wanna do is be able to protect my team. Waiting is not one of my skills, especially when it involves people I care about.
"New York? Haven't seen anyone east of the Mississippi for over a year. How many of you are there?" Williams questions, an almost surprised look on his face.
"Nine. Including a doctor." Garnett tells him and I almost laugh at his little stretch of the truth.
I love Doc, don't get me wrong, but calling him a doctor would be like calling Murphy Jesus.
"Real doctor?" The stranger asks and I can't help, but smile at the fact he knows to ask the right questions.
"Sort of. He's watched a lot of E.R." Our leader tells him as Doc leans over the side of the truck and waves.
"All right. Come inside and tell me your story. We'll get you some food. But the truck stays outside. Let them in. And of course you'll have to check your weapons." Williams finally relents and allows us to get out of the truck.
We all climb out, Cassandra helping me out of the truck. Once we are all out we head into their weird little check in counter, Cass on one side of me, 10k on the other. Makes me feel like the president, my own bodyguards' following me around.
Slowly, but surely we each begin checking in our weapons. Garnett going first, his hammer and gun going in before they scan him with a metal detector. When they say no weapons they really mean it.
"Just make sure we get these back." Mack tells the guy as he gives him his two guns, before going to get scanned.
Naturally Addy goes after him, handing the guy her Z-whacker which I'm sure can't be easy for her. I'm not sure how I'm gonna be able to give up all my protection so easily.
"Why is this not making me feel any safer?" Addy sighs as she hands over her gun as well.
"Looks like it's seen a little action." The guard behind the desk comments as he examines Addy's pride and joy making Addy and I both laugh.
Warren goes after Addy, her guns and machete checking in as she steps up to be scanned by the metal detector.
"Ex prison guard?" Warren asks the woman with the wand.
"TSA." She replies before scanning the older woman.
Doc hands over his gun before it's his turn to be scanned.
"Just like Dodge City." He jokes, but no one seems to enjoy his humor here.
"We have our reasons." Williams tells him as he stands and watches each of us go on through his security check point.
"Makes sense. Strong on the outside. Safe on the inside." Garnett nods as he stands near the other groups leader, 10k stepping up to hand over his weapons.
I almost laugh as he hands over his sniper, slingshot, a small saw-knife, a small pistol, another knife, and a larger knife. I knew he had weapons, but damn! When he steps up to be scanned, the wand beeps around his crotch making me scrunch my eyebrows.
To my surprise he pulls a thick chain from his pants and this time I do let out a light laugh. Jesus, he really is a killer.
Guess it's my turn now. I pull out my crossbow, and regular bow with all my arrows. I also pull out my two knives and throwing knives. Next are my two guns, which leaves me completely vulnerable.
I get my metal detector scan, before I join 10k's side, Cass hot on my tail. Murphy is the last on through since he has no weapons at all. We all walk out through the door leading inside the compound.
I find myself sandwiched again, except this time I'm welcoming the security they bring. I feel so naked without weapons, but Cass and 10k make me feel safer. My hand find's Cassandra's while I keep my other arm lightly pressed against 10k.
"Major, you're not gonna believe this. Three of Jacob's flock are back." The woman from before speaks in a slightly flustered voice, and I watch her anxiety ridden stance next to her leader.
I follow their gaze to the gate to see three younger looking individuals, two men and a woman. Something about the trio sets off alarm bells in my head, these people are crazy in some form or another, I just know it.
"Major Williams? We'd like to come back. We were wrong to leave." The taller male calls out and I bite the inside of my cheek again.
"Jacob turned out to be just some crazy cult leader." The smaller Asian male comments and I hope Williams is smart enough to not let these creeps back inside.
"We brought food." The girl calls and I turn my attention to the leader of the compound.
A soft tug on my hand catches makes me turn to see Cass giving me a curious look and only then do I realize how tight my grip on her has gotten. I let go of her and take a step back away from the pair trying to protect me.
How do I explain my feelings without sounding insane? I can't, therefore they can't know anything is wrong. Time to use the one acting class I took when I was eight to hide my feelings.
I smile reassuringly at them, Cassandra seeming to buy my emotional switch, but 10k seems less sure. He is certainly more perceptive than I was hoping, but I'm sure I can convince him I'm fine.
"What do you want us to do?" The woman asks the general and I hear him say the one thing I was hoping he wouldn't.
"If they're clean, let 'em back in. Probably won't be the last of his sheep to wander back."
Well shit, that decision is gonna bite us all in the ass, I just know it is.
We all start walking, Cass, 10k, and I in the back of the group. Garnett and Williams up in the front as we walk around the grounds of their compound.
"You seem tense." 10k whispers to me and I turn to face him, my arms crossed across my chest as I chew the inside of my cheek.
"No idea what you're talking about." I shrug before facing our leader, his voice drifting back to us.
"I feel so much lighter without that damn hammer." He comments and I try to ignore our team's sharp shooter's eyes burning holes into the back of my head as he walks incredibly close to me, his arm brushing against my back.
"Yeah, I feel naked, and not in a good way." Warren grumbles and I nod in agreement, Cass glancing back at me from her spot slightly in front of me.
"When we started out, everyone was armed. Then one day a guy decided to shoot his wife's boyfriend. He turned, and we lost five people. So we made a rule. Only guards could carry inside. Then a trading group came in. Took a gun off a guard. Seven dead that time. We were lucky it wasn't worse. We have a strong perimeter. Never been breached. All our problems happened inside. So we removed the threats. No weapons inside the walls, period. It's a better way to live. Safer." Williams explains and I almost role my eyes at his little story tale.
"This isn't the 70's, weapons equal safety." I grumble before Cass lightly elbows me in the stomach making me stumble back into 10k, who easily catches me, putting me back on my feet.
I look over my shoulder at the taller boy and nod my thanks at him. He flashes me the smallest of small smiles before I focus back on our group.
"Being armed all the time has an effect on people. Maybe I'm naïve, but this gives me hope." Garnett almost sighs and I bite my tongue to keep my smartass from making unneeded issues.
"Is this a zombie cage?" Warren asks as we make our way past an empty metal cage.
I'm tempted to run my hand along the bars, but the anxiety eating away at my insides keeps my hands safely tucked against my body. Stupid no weapon rules.
"Doesn't seem much use these days. We patrol the surrounding area for Zs twice a day, so they aren't really a problem. It's the people we have to worry about. Since going weapon-free, we've gone over a year without a fatality. Think about that. You've been out in the world. How many deaths have you seen in the last year?" Williams tells us and I roll my eyes at his little speeches.
"You sound like a car salesperson." I mumble, but the way Warren turns around to glare at me makes me look the the ground.
"Enough for a lifetime." Garnett sighs and my mind begins to drift to all the death I've witnessed.
Screams from thousands of different people, young, old, girl, boy, all fill my ears. One ringing out louder than all the others. Her screams shrill and heart shattering, so loud I can feel them in my toes.
Her brown eyes locked onto mine with so much terror, her eyes begging for me to save her. The stench of blood was so strong I can still smell it, the smell filling my senses.
Her gruesome death flashing before my eyes, her begging screams to be saved as she die makes a sick feeling fill my stomach before a nudge yanks me from my stroll down memory lane.
My eyes lock onto a pair of worried blue-green eyes and the coppery taste of blood fills my mouth and I realize I was biting my cheek so hard it started bleeding. I didn't even notice until 10k shook me back into the world of the living.
I look away from the sniper to notice I'm inside a building, a building with lights. My attention shifts back to the conversation being had, a chunk of it was missed because of my flashbacks to the glory of the early days. Note the sarcasm.
"All the doors and gates close automatically, sealing off each section of the compound. Like on a submarine. Can't be opened by Zs. Everything's been zombie-proofed." Williams explains and I can tell how proud he is of his camp.
"You ever hear of the Titanic?" Murphy retorts and I kick him lightly in the back of his calf as Williams glares at him.
I am gonna teach Murphy's dumbass when to talk and when to shut up, even if I have to beat it into him. I'm not gonna save him from his stupid remarks every time.
"You're welcome to wait outside in your vehicle." Williams tells our resident dick.
"You'll have to forgive my friend. He's been through a lot." Garnett apologizes and I scrunch up my nose at him making excuses for the whiney crybaby.
A slight pressure against my side draws my attention and I turn to see 10k is softly pressed against me. I wish he wasn't so observant, after my little daydream episode he isn't gonna back off for a while.
"We all have. Nothing's perfect, but this is as close as it gets. After a while, most people find they can actually sleep through the night." Williams tells us as he leads us into a cafeteria of sorts.
"Really? I can't imagine that." Addy comments and I can't help but agree.
I can barely sleep out in the world with my weapons, no way I could do it in here with nothing to keep me safe. These people must be crazy, sleeping soundly is a luxury of the past.
"We grow all our own fruits and vegetables. The scraps and our waste all go into a biomass generator. We're up to four hours of electricity a day." Williams continues as he brings us towards a buffet styled area.
He stops near the end and my eyes scan over the food in front of us. They have actual bread rolls and apples. I'm stuffing at least two rolls in my bag before we leave.
"Really? That's cool." Addy comments and I know it's her nerd brain speaking.
"What's their story?" Warren asks and I turn away from the bread and food to see what it is that she's talking about.
The trio from the gate walk in and sit at a table together and the bad feeling starts climbing back up my throat. They are very bad news, I'm not completely sure why yet, but they definitely are.
I nudge 10k slightly and move my head so he can see my eyes are focused on the three sitting at the table in the corner. A finger presses against my back and spells out 'I know' quickly. I nod slightly, glad we are on the same page.
"We had a little trouble a while back with a preacher we took in. He drank his own kool-aid. Decided the Zompocalypse was actually The Second Coming and we needed to save the Zs, not kill them. Calls them "The Resurrected." Real whack-job." Williams explains and I nod along to his little story.
"I'm not an expert on the Bible, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing in there about zombies." Warren states and I almost laugh.
Yeah I'm pretty sure I would remember going over the zombie testament in church.
"We had to kick him out, along with his followers. I've seen this kind of thing before. Crazy spreads fast." The major tells us.
"So why would you let them back in?" Warren asks and I can't help, but agree with her question, letting them back in was a horrible idea.
"They all had family still here. I knew once they were out a while, they'd get hungry or scared and some would come back. Like clockwork these three turned up today." He shrugs in response and I try not to grab him by the shoulders and shake some sense into him.
Does he not realize how he sounds. If they were in a cult, do you really think they could just change their minds and say 'Oh, just kidding! We are leaving now!' Of course they couldn't do that! Does he know nothing of cults?
"Not true believers, huh?" Garnett asks and I almost scoff at how easily these people trust others.
"Hard to believe on an empty stomach. Speaking of which, let's get you people something to eat. First meal is on me. The rest you trade for. No meat of course. Hope you're vegetarian." Our host tells us as we all grab a plate.
"Oh yeah." Cass replies and I reach over and place a hand on her shoulder before putting food on my plate.
I grab two apples, three rolls, some carrots, green beans, and corn. Holy hell am I excited to eat food, fresh food at that. Once my plate is full I follow 10k over to a table with the rest of our group. I sit down next to him and shovel half the food into my bag and eat one of the rolls.
Cass sits down in front of me and laughs softly at me as I enjoy the bread. I stick my tongue out at her before 10k tensing beside me catches my attention. I follow his gaze to see the girl from the church of crazy leaving the room and her demeaner screams suspicious.
I nudge 10k and stand up, before following after her. A sudden warmth right behind me tells me that he's right behind me. Whatever this girl is trying to do, I'm not just gonna let her get away with.
"Be aware." 10k whispers and I nod in agreement as we slip out the door into the hallway.
We follow her out into a hallway just as she stops at a door, bending down and doing, well, something I can't see from here. Then she stands up and walks through the door, prompting 10k and I to walk over.
The door is slightly propped open by a block of wood which falls when I push it open wider. What in the world is this chick planning? Trying to let in a breeze? I just don't understand.
I look to 10k, but he looks just as confused. I shrug before following after her. We walk outside towards the gate, the girl a ways in front of us, but she's walking funny now.
"Do you see-" I start to ask before a crunch sound catches my attention.
10k bends down to pick something up, so I bend down next to him to see some weird wooden cross on a string. We both stand up and I take the item from him. There is something more to this piece of wood, I can feel it.
10k peers around the corner while I lean against his back to study this thing. I flip it over to see what appears to be blood. What in the horror movie is this? I rub it with my thumb and look at it closer. That's when I notice a slit in the wood. I pull it apart to reveal a bloody blade.
A scream makes my head shoot up to see the trio girl is now a zombie attacking the guard lady from earlier.
Well shit, so much for safe.
