On the morning of his sixteenth birthday, Virgil decided to stop smiling so much. He wanted people to take him more seriously. If he felt the urge to smile he would just roll his eyes and scoff. Whatever joke that previously made him laugh and smile was now an annoyance. It began to get out of his control however, his pessimistic attitude began pushing away the friends he had grown up with. Whispers began spreading around school, and he became the outcast of his class. He didn't care anymore. His want to be taken seriously shifted into wanting to be feared. He was aggressive, and snapped at people who tried to belittle him.
He did not smile at all, even away from everyone else. He was miserable, ended up breaking down and crying once he was alone. Only to do it all again the next day, that's how it was for the rest of his Sophomore and Junior year of high school. He was miserable, and it was all his fault, he had lost everyone he had trusted enough to befriend. He was lonely, there was no reason to lie to himself about that.
Then Senior year happened, someone new moved into Virgil's English class. Virgil had not seen this student before, knew he had to be new to the school in general. He definitely would have remembered how his heart stuttered when the student looked at him, if he had seen him before. There were several days where he couldn't help his eyes drifting over to the student. After some eavesdropping he realized the student's name was Roman.
It wasn't hard to tell that Roman was quickly taken into the popular group, he had this vibrant extroverted personality. He was loud and spontaneous. Everything Virgil was not. He tried to force himself to hate Roman, try to go back to his brooding attitude and finish off high school alone. But he couldn't. He felt something that just couldn't be described at that moment, and he wanted to feel it more.
The only way to do that was to actually talk to him.
He hated the thought of that, he knew that someone probably told him to stay away already. He wanted to just work up the courage to introduce himself, but he knew what would happen. Either he'd be scoffed at, or he would slip up in his introduction and stutter, and be laughed at. There were more possibilities, but he thought those would never happen so he decided not to fantasize about them.
One day, however, as he was thinking over these possibilities during lunch. He heard someone clear their throat behind him. Clearly trying to get his attention. He braced himself quickly putting his scowl and aggressive demeanor back on. He turned in his chair, "What do you-" He stopped dead in his tracks. There he was, Roman Prince looking at him with an almost unreadable expression.
"I was wondering if you'd explain why you've been staring at me so much. I know I'm attractive, but it's a little creepy at this point." Roman stated, god, his voice was smooth and deep. Virgil snapped himself out of his trance and just rolled his eyes, "Don't flatter yourself, you're a five at best." Wonderful, Virgil. You just insulted someone you're crushing on. He mentally berated himself.
Roman scoffed, "Oh, I must be better than that, otherwise you wouldn't be staring at me." Virgil felt his face begin to flush, oh god he hated this, he was going to fuck up any chance of him even befriending him, let alone dating him. In Virgil's silence, Roman smirked, "Exactly what I thought..."
Before Virgil could retort, Roman leaned forward, placing a kiss on the emo boys' cheek. Making the shorter's face become an even more apparent shade of red. Virgil just looked up at Roman, stunned into absolute flustered silence. "Hopefully, I will get to see you again, my darling emo." Roman stated, with a wink, before walking off, back to his table.
Leaving Virgil in a state, where all he could do was give a small smile.
