Where the water is Pink
We load up after I get dressed and we head out. Sarah drives. Her car is comically tiny, so Sam and Dean are sandwiching me between them. Alphonse sits in the passenger seat. I burst out laughing from nervousness.
"It's okay, Elizabeth." She turns some music on the radio. It's some artist called Dayglow and she happily sings along. It's like she doesn't know about the darkness in the world or chooses to ignore it completely. She is a light.
She pulls over on the side of a back road, the snow gently falling as she takes the keys out of the ignition. Sam gets out as soon as possible and I slide out next, my feet mushing into the snow. The crisp air bites us.
I can see the lake between the trees. Poor trees. They're naked and have no sign of green. Sarah pulls a tire iron from her trunk and we make our way through the snowy terrain to the frozen over lake.
"It's not too frozen." She says it while leading the way and turning back to us, her blue eyes sparkling in the sun.
We reach the edge of the ground and we are looking over the pond. It's vast, extending further than the eye can see. Alphonse is carrying the salt and torch. Sam and Dean are carrying faces of hesitation.
We look at our feet, seemingly all thinking the same thing. How are we going to find a skull in all this water?
"Alright. Who's going to do it?" Sarah looks at all of us. She's shivering; I wish I could warm her up. Do you know when it's so cold that your ears feel like they're burning off? That's how cold it was.
"Shouldn't you do it? You're the witch." Dean looks to Alphonse.
"That's not how it works. I'll feel the skull when I'm close, but I haven't the slightest idea where it could be right now."
"I do." I point out to the middle of the pond. It's not too far away. There's a vibrant, green lily, amidst the icy white water.
I start walking, carefully. If I could run, I would.
"Elizabeth, wait. We're coming." Sarah comes after me and then the rest.
I stop at the lily and pick it up. It disintegrates in my hands, burning a small hole in the ice.
"How will I see when I'm under?" I volunteer myself without explicitly saying so.
"No. No way." Dean takes his jacket off, prepared to go in for me.
"Dean. You're better out here in case something happens. No offense, but I've tried to lift your unconscious body before. It's not easy." I tap his shoulder and take a deep breath.
"Alphonse. Seriously? You're going to let the 120 pound girl go in?"
"We have bigger fish to fry." He points to the edge of the water, where these giant figures are standing. They have flowing green eyes and are covered with lily pads. They have no facial features aside from their eyes. They look about ten feet tall.
"Now or never. Back up." They all back up and I jump up and down on the ice. On the third jump, I feel this overwhelming cold hug from the water. It makes me gasp underwater from the sharp coldness. I come back up for air before I go back down and I see the four of them fighting with the Lilly pad monsters. I breathe deeply and dive back down, opening my eyes under the water. I see some faint pink light below me and dive a little further down. I can't feel my body, so I don't even know how I'm swimming. The pink light gets closer as I get closer. I grab the pink and feel the skull in my hands. Easy enough. I start to swim towards the surface, which is harder than I thought with a skull in my hands. I am running out of breath and feel my lungs screaming at me. I reach the surface and gasp for breath, trying to pull myself onto the ice again.
I put the skull into the ice and use my arms to try to pull myself out. I see a figure above me, the lily pad monster, looking down at me. It crouches and shoves my head back down under. I struggle against him, screaming underwater. I swim to another spot in the ice and start beating it with my fists. It cracks a little bit, but I see the shadow of another lily pad man. Suddenly, I remember what the book earned me about. It wasn't the skull being above water. Careful to keep the head above water means my own head. I'm going to fucking drown.
