14. The Spy

Currently Steve and I were trying to extract answers from Dustin. And that kid better start talking. It was silent before we started the interview though. "Wait a sec. How big?" Steve asked Dustin. He'd stolen the passenger seat from me. Shoving me to the back.

"First it was like that. Now he's like this." Dustin said showing us the size with his hands.

"Just great, we're looking for a psycho dog basically." I said to them as I leaned back into the seat.

"I swear to God, man, it's just some little lizard, okay?" Steve asked him, it better not be a lizard. Otherwise Steve and I's potentially date was ruined.

"It better not be a lizard." I said to Dustin. If it was I'd be mad.

"It's not a lizard." He said to the two of us.

"How do you know?" Steve asked him.

"And are your positive that you do you know?" I asked him and I was starting to see why people thought that Steve and I thought the same.

"How do I know if it's not?" Dustin asked us and now there was too many questions.

"How do you know it's not just a lizard?" Steve asked him, I felt like we were going in circles now.

"Because his face opened up and he ate me cat." Dustin said and I looked at him.

"Shit man, I'm sorry about your cat. That's definitely not a lizard." I said to them both and it went silent. Steve didn't know what to say. We then made it to Dustin!s house. To the cellar outside. There was no noise coming from it.

"I don't hear shit." Steve said, he had his bat ready to swing at the beast.

"He's in there." Dustin asked and I looked at him.

"Are you sure?" I asked him and he nodded. Steve poked the doors. Nothing. He then hit them. Still nothing. He then swung around and shone his light at Dustin.

"All right, listen, kid. I swear, if this is some sort of Halloween prank, you're dead." Steve said to him, especially since we had plans. And if this was a prank. I wouldn't be too happy about wasting my time.

"It's not." He said to us.

"It better not be." I said to him and Steve looked at us. We were like parents most of the time.

"All right?" Steve asked him. Yeah, we were definitely parents to these kids.

"It's not a prank. Get it out of my face." Dustin said to Steve and I could see he was thinking about something.

"You got a key for this thing?" Steve asked as Dustin went to get it for him. Once he made his return back Steve took the key and unlocked her.

"Hey, before you do anything else, I love you." I said to Steve and I kissed him. I couldn't have that be our last time.

"I love you too." Steve said before he opened the doors to the cellar. We shone the light down there. I couldn't see shit. "Let me see that." Steve said as he took it.

"He must be further down there. I'll stay up here in case he tries to escape." Dustin said getting a sigh from Steve. He didn't want to go down there I could tell. I didn't want him to either.

"Stay up here with the kid." Steve said to me and I looked at him.

"I'll look after him, don't worry." I said to Steve before he started walking down. Here was to hoping that he'd be ok down there. I saw the light down there get switched on which gave me a bit of comfort.

"Steve? Steve, what's going on down there?" Dustin asked as Steve was silent. Even I was starting to panic it wasn't long until the light was pointed at us.

"Get down here." He said to us and I went down there first with Dustin behind me. I saw what looked like shedded skin on the end of Steve's bat. It was all slimy which made it seem disgusting.

"Oh, shit. Oh, shit!" Dustin said as we laid eyes on the tunnel.

"Well, that's not good at all." I said to them both as we walked over to it. With the amount that was dug out. This thing could be anywhere.

"No way. No way." Dustin said and who knew how far this thing went.

"Listen, if we're going to get this thing. We need to wait till the morning. Start with a fresh head, get a plan." I said to them and they both looked at me. It only made sense if we prepared in the morning.

"Only thing is, if we do that we then have more surface area to cover in the morning." Dustin said to us, we then both looked to Steve. He put his free arm around me.

"You're both right but Henderson's right. Although the things we need won't open until morning and then this thing might be tired as well." Steve said to us both. We then got back to his car. Where I slept the night. And in the morning we got some meat in buckets. That was our bait. We also had  the most important thing, other than gloves, gasoline. We had to make sure that we could kill this thing. Never see it again. Dustin turned away. I'm guessing he was talking on his radio.

"Well, well, well, look who it is. Well, when you were having sister problems, Dart grew again, he escaped, and I'm pretty sure he's a baby Demogorgon. I'll explain later. Meet me, Y/n and Steve at the old junkyard. And bring your binoculars and wrist rocket." Dustin said to him as Steve and I got everything out that we needed.

"All right, let's go." Steve said to him and I looked at them both.

"Let's go monster hunting." I said to them both as we began to walk away.

"Just be there, stat. Over and out." Dustin said and that was the end of the conversation. To the mystery person on the end. For all I know it could've been Hunter.

"Who's coming?" I asked him and he looked at me.

"Lucas. Hopefully." He said to me and I looked at him. I take it Hunter was still with Will and Mike. Which was my ideal place for him. Especially with these things on the loose. I thought that one was enough of them, but knowing there could be more. That just made my situation worse. As we were walking we were throwing the meat at the same time. Leaving a trail for it. I'm fairytales they use breadcrumbs but for us, we used raw meat. The most perfect thing there is. Not.

"All right, so let me get this straight. You kept something you knew was probably dangerous in order to impress a girl who...who you just met?" Steve asked him and I looked at him.

"You did something similar with me, just without the dangerous being." I said to him and he looked at me. He knew that I had outsmarted him.

"All right, that's grossly oversimplifying things." Dustin said to him and I didn't think it was.

"I mean, why would a girl like some nasty slug anyway?" Steve asked as we were still throwing the bait.

"An interdimensional slug? Because it's awesome." Dustin said to us and to me a slug was a slug.

"Well, even if she thought it was cool, which she didn't, I...I just...I don't know. I just feel like you're trying way too hard." Steve said to him and I was having no opinion on this. This was a guys talk.

"Well, not everyone can have your perfect hair, all right?" Dustin asked him and I looked at him.

"It was not because of the hair for me." I said to him, I don't actually know what it was about Steve. There was just something.

"It's not about the hair, man. The key with girls is just...just acting like you don't care." Steve said to me and that was true. Because then it made me more interested in him. For some reason.

"Even if you do?" Dustin asked and I always knew that Steve cared. His act sometimes was given up.

"Yeah, exactly. It drives them nuts." Steve said before he realized he was spilling all his secrets in front of me.

"Then what?" Dustin asked and I looked.

"No, continue on. I'm not here." I said to him and then looked back at Dustin.

"You just wait until, uh...until you feel it." Steve said to him and it was obvious when Steve started to feel it.

"Feel what?" Dustin asked and the feeling was hard to explain.

"It's like before it's gonna storm, you know? You can't see it, but you can feel it, like this, uh...electricity, you know? It took about two weeks before I felt it with Y/n." Steve said and I smiled. Thankfully my face was hidden by my hair so the he couldn't see.

"Oh, like in the electromagnetic field when the clouds in the atmosphere- -" Dustin said and that's when I looked at Steve and he was shaking his head slightly.

"No, no, no, no, no. Like a...like a sexual electricity." Steve said to him and that's when Dustin understood it.

"Oh." Dustin got out.

"You feel that and then you make your move." Steve said to him and I looked at them both.

"And that's when you can finally try and start something." I said to him.

"So that's when you kiss her?" Dustin asked, he was so clueless to all of this.

"No, whoa, whoa. Slow down, Romeo." Steve said, it was close to that part but not quite yet.

"Sorry." Dustin said apologizing. especially when he didn't need to.

"Sure, okay, some girls, yeah, they want you to be aggressive. You know, strong, hot and heavy, like a...I don't know, like a Lion." Steve said to him, when it came to Steve I didn't care if he was a lion or a kitten. Dustin hummed in response. "But others, you gotta be slow, you gotta be stealthy, like a...like a ninja." Steve said and he definitely wasn't a ninja.

"What type is Y/n?" Dustin asked while looking over at me.

"Yeah. What Type am I?" I asked him and he looked at the two of us.

"Y/n's different. In the nicest way. Your different than the other girls." Steve said while looking at me with a smile. I smiled back, it was nice to know that I was different.

"Yeah, she seems pretty special, I guess." Dustin said and I was trying to ignore all these comments.

"Yeah. Yeah, she is." Steve said as I saw him smile at me again.

"But this girl's special, too, you know. It's just, like, something about her." Dustin said to us and I looked at him. He was in love with this girl. And he barely knew her.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hey, hey, hey." Steve said to him and I looked at Dustin.

"You need to slow down." I said to him, he was already catching feelings.

"What?" Dustin asked us both and we had come to a small halt.

"You're not falling in love with this girl, are you?" Steve asked and he went silent.

"Uh, no. No." Dustin said and I could tell that he was lying to us.

"Okay, good. Don't." Steve said to him, it was too early for that.

"You are way too young to be falling in love." I said to him and Steve looked at me and nodded.

"I won't." Dustin said to him. And we started walking away again.

"She's only gonna break your heart, and you're way too young for that shit." Steve said and we started walking in silence. While throwing the bait down. "Fabergé." Steve said out of nowhere. This made Dustin and I look at him.

"What?" We both asked him. He then pointed to his hair.

"It's Fabergé Organics. Use the shampoo and conditioner, and when your hair's damp...it's not wet, okay? When it's damp..." Steve said as he was giving more lessons to Dustin.

"Damp." Dustin repeated.

"You do four puffs of the Farrah Fawcett Spray." Steve said and that's when I just wasn't going to say anything.

"And it makes your hair look so good and it's kind of your signature." I said to him. If we didn't smell I would've kissed him but now was not the right time.

"Farrah Fawcett spray?" Dustin asked him and I looked at them both.

"Yeah, Farrah Fawcett. You tell anyone I just told you that and your ass is grass. You're dead, Henderson. Do you understand?" Steve asked him as we came to another halt. He knew that he didn't have to worry about me.

"Yup." Dustin said and Steve let out a sigh.

"Okay." Steve said and we kept walking.

"Farrah Fawcett, really?" Dustin asked him as we kept walking.

"I mean, she's hot." Steve said and the both of them really were like father and son.

"Yeah." Dustin said and I was starting to walk ahead.

"Come on you two. We can't wait around." I said to them both and they looked at each other before looking at me. They then sped up to catch up with me. Once we had made it to the junkyard I saw no sign of Lucas.

"Oh, yeah. Yeah, this will do. This will do just fine." Steve said before he walked away. "Good call dude." He said and I saw Dustin smile. We the followed him still leaving our trail and then dumping the rest of the contents out in the middle.

"I said medium-well!" Lucas shouted and then I saw a girl with him. That must be the girl that Dustin likes.

"Who's that?" Steve asked as they both started walking over to us.

"She's pretty whoever she is." I said to him with a smile. Although her demeanor was like she didn't care for anything. Steve and I then started making a secure area for how we can take these things down. We'd discovered that the girl was called Max, she was Billy's sister. Me, her and Steve were sorting things out whilst the boys were having their own private meeting. After we'd made our pile of scrap metal along with creating barriers. We then laid a line of gasoline leading up to the bus. And once everything was in place we hid. In the bus. It was our safest option. Soon it was dark out and that's when the fog settled in. I was currently sat next to Steve. Head on his shoulder with his free arm around me. In the other he was holding a lighter and was flicking it open and close.

"So you really fought one of these things before?" Max asked us. Steve stopped what he was doing. And then he went back to doing it again. "And you're, like, totally 100% sure it wasn't a bear?" She added, and of course it wasn't a bear. I don't think their faces open up.

"Shit. Don't be an idiot. Okay? It wasn't a bear. Why are you even here if you don't believe us? Just go home." Dustin said to her and he really was trying to be a lion.

"Geesh. Someone's cranky. Past your bedtime?" She asked him making me smile. I liked this girl.

"That's good. Just. Show her you don't care." Steve said to him, like he was a proud dad.

"I don't." Dustin said making Steve wink at him. "Why are you winking, Steve? Stop. Wink at your girlfriend instead." Dustin said to him and Steve went back to flicking his lighter. This wait was definitely the calm before the storm.

"Do you think they'll take the bait?" I asked Steve and he looked at me before resting his head on mine.

"They have no choice but to." He said to me and it wasn't long after that until we heard a growl. We went to the window and looked. I couldn't see anything.

"You see him?" Dustin asked us both.

"No." We both answered at the same time.

"Lucas, what's going on?" Dustin called up to him. I was hoping that they were seeing something.

"Hold on!" Lucas shouted before going quiet. I then heard growling again. People would usually be scared in this case. But I wasn't, I was ready for this thing. "I've got eyes! Ten o'clock! Ten o'clock!" Lucas shouted and I started to scan around the area.

"There." Steve said pointing him out.

"What's he doing?" Dustin asked us.

"I have no idea." I said to him.

"I don't know." Steve said before we heard a chittering. It continued. It was getting closer. "He's not taking the bait. Why is he not taking the bait?" Steve asked us.

"Maybe he's not hungry?" Dustin asked us. I doubt that. These things were always hungry.

"Maybe he's sick of cow." Steve said before he backed away. And whatever he was thinking, I didn't like it.

"What are you doing? Don't do whatever your thinking of!" I said to him but he didn't listen to me.

"Steve? Steve, what are you doing? Steve?" Dustin asked as we started to follow Steve.

"Just get ready?" He said before throwing the lighter to Dustin. He then started going outside. This whole time I was scared. Shutting the door behind him was the worst part. I was letting the guy I loved make himself into a meal. I then went upstairs as Max then went down. I needed to see what he was doing. He was trying to attract those things out. And once he did, there was more than one.

"Steve, watch out!" Lucas shouted at him.

"A little busy here!" He shouted back and I looked at Lucas.

"Three o'clock! Three o'clock!" We shouted at him but more just kept coming.

"Steve! Steve! Abort! Abort!" Dustin shouted at him and then Lucas and I went downstairs to call for him. And once he made it back in I wrapped my arms around him. But they were banging on the side. "Shit!" He shouted.

"Are they rabid or something?" Max asked us and they were things not from our dimension so of course they were rabid.

"That can't get in! They can't!" Lucas shouted before the started to get in. Steve and I were holding them back whilst the rest went to the back. We then heard a loud noise from above. We'd only just managed to secure ourselves again. I then heard Max scream and Steve went over.

"Out of the way! Out of the way! You want some? Come and get this!" Steve said to it and I went over as well. But the thing left. Like it was going somewhere else. Steve and I then opened the door and headed out. They'd gone. I then waved my arm letting the kids know they could come out.

"What happened?" Lucas asked and I wish I had an answer.

"I don't know." Max answered.

"It looks like they found somewhere better to go." I said to them all.

"Steve scared 'em off?" Dustin asked and I wish that was the answer.

"No. No way. Y/n's right, they're going somewhere." He said to us and that's when I was starting to worry about Hunter. Where he was. Who knew where he was along with Will and Mike. With these things running around, I'd never feel safe until they were gone.
