I Am a Thousand Winds

A/N: So I was on YouTube, listening to music, and came across a gorgeous song called I Am a Thousand Winds, which I've heard before, but not this specific version (Hayley Westenra). I was instantly in love with it, and after listening to it a few times, a thought came to mind, so that's what prompted this work, along with a prompt I found on tumblr some time ago; "I heard you playing ___".

Just to let you know, this one is angsty.

Roy had known that Y/N had been feeling down lately, and thought he might have known the cause. Truthfully, he'd also been feeling down, likely for the same reason, as the anniversary of Hughes's passing was coming soon.

Hughes had been a close friend to both of you, and the three of you were always seen together during breaks you had at the same times. Y/N would go to Hughes for comfort when she was feeling down, as he always seemed to know exactly what to say and do. Of course, Roy had a lot more history with him than Y/N, but that didn't mean that she wasn't close to him.

Roy and Y/N had made plans to have dinner at Y/N's house, as she loved to cook for her friends. Since she didn't have any living family anymore, her friends were her family, and Roy was a special case there, as she'd developed romantic feelings for him some time ago. She was afraid to confess her true feelings, though, as doing so could easily make things difficult between them.

Y/N had planned for Roy to come over on her day off, so she spent the day cleaning the house up and getting ready for company. By the time he'd be off work, everything would be clean and set up, and dinner would already be in progress. She was very good at planning things out and getting them done in a timely manner, and Roy had always admired that quality of hers.

So once work was over, Roy started heading out, telling his team that the day was over and they could go home. He stayed behind for a minute to make sure everyone was off, then he started to walk out to his car to drive home real quick to shower and dress in something more comfortable. Afterwards, he was off to her home, and knew he didn't need to knock or announce himself. She'd told him and the rest of the team that if it was ever needed, they could come to her house for any emergency, and could just come in. They were her family, after all.

When he stepped over the threshold of the front door, Roy could hear soft singing coming from the main room. It sounded sad, too. He frowned as he quietly stepped from the foyer after hanging his coat and removing his shoes, into the great room. Y/N was standing over by her desk, seemingly holding something close to her chest.

"I am a thousand winds,
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow,
I am a thousand winds that blow."

He stood, shocked at how beautiful her voice was, even when it wavered as she continued to sing the song. Not wanting to shock her, he stayed quiet, leaning on the archway that separated the foyer from the living area.

"Please do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die.
I am the swift rush of birds in flight,
I am the stars that shine at night."

At this point, she picked up a frame that sat on the desk. Having been to her house many times before, Roy knew what the frame held; a photo of him, Y/N and Hughes all together, smiling and laughing. He remembered that Riza was the one who had taken the photo. That had been a very nice day, which they'd spent enjoying the weather and each other's company. He continued to watch over her, feeling tears that threatened to fall from his eyes.

"I am a thousand winds,
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow,
I am a thousand winds that blow.

"Please do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am the sunlight on the ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain."

Her voice was quieting now, and it was heavy with sadness, but still in key. They both knew that Hughes wouldn't want them to mourn over him. That was a hard thing to refrain from, as they loved the man who had doted so heavily on his little angel.

"I am a thousand winds,
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow,
I am a thousand winds that blow.

She dropped to her knees at this point, still hugging the framed photo close. Her face was slightly visible to Roy, and he saw the streaks of tears staining her cheeks.

"I am the diamond glint on snow,
I am a thousand winds that blow."

As she finished the song, she began to fully cry, still unaware of her friend's presence. Finally, he made his way over to her, stepping lightly as he walked over. Slowly, he knelt beside her, gently took the frame from her arms and set it on the desk, then pulled her into his chest. She immediately clung to him and cried into his shoulder as she held onto him tightly. Roy felt his own heart break at how sad she was, and finally allowed his own tears to fall as he stroked her soft hair.
