#18

Peter's mother made a second cake which tasted much better than Peter's.

There was more than enough for the guests to have seconds. The day was spent dancing, eating and having fun with friends. The boys played a few songs to please their crowd. Peter's mother followed him around the entire time talking about him and every time she said his name she'd pinch his cheek and he'd straighten up and smile. Davy and his girlfriend hadn't unlinked their arms since she had arrived. Davy had told her an altered version of what had happened in the hotel room. He told her that he had been the only one of the three who wanted to open the bag. And the only one of the four who wanted to keep Lani. When Micky heard this he just rolled his eyes. What could he say or do; The boy had a way with words!

Sometime in the early afternoon Micky called everyone to attention and announced that it was time for Lani to receive a present. He took his hand from behind him. He held a dark green, silk box with glittery green lace.

The child's face lit up as she took it from hi and ran to the table to open it. She carefully ripped away the lace and took the top off. Her eyes teared up as she took the present from the box. Micky had bought her a small custom doll that resembled herself. She hugged it to herself and turned to Micky. She hugged his leg and smiled. Micky bent down to hug her better. He dried her happy tears and smiled at her.

"Micky?" She asked. Micky noted that this was her first time saying his name. "What does this mean?"

He noted too that she was a smart six year old.

"What does it mean to you?" He answered.

"It means....that your my new father?" Lani ventured.

Micky smiled wider. "If that's what it means to you then yes, I am your father."

Lani giggled and ran off into the crowd.

Micky sprang up and turned to Mike, "You hear that! I'm a daddy!!!" He yelled excitedly!

"I heard good buddy, Congratulations!" Mike slapped him on the back.

"I really never thought you'd ever say that, Micky." Davy said.

Micky growled at him.

"Heh-ha!" Davy laughed and walked off, Myra in tow.

"I always thought you'd make a good father." Peter informed them.

"Well that means absolutely noth-" Mike started.

"EVERYTHING!" Micky shouted over him so that Peter's feelings wouldn't be hurt.

"I always thought you'd be a good..."

"Father?" Peter interrupted his mother.

"God-father..." She finished.

Peter frowned and walked away.

"You know he's always been a sensitive little boy." His mother smiled. "But he's got a good heart and he genuinely loves his mother."

She too left. Mike had joined Phyllis to help take care of Christian, their son.

Micky greeted all the guests for the sixth or seventh time that day. But he was interrupted by an ear splitting bang. The whole crowd fell to the ground.

"ALL RIGHT!!!! PARTY'S OVER!!!!" A voice yelled from the doorway.

Fright hit Micky. The voice was Doris'. He searched the crowd with his eyes for Lani. He saw her back into the laundry room and hide. He thought again how smart she was.

"Everybody out!!!" Doris commanded. "Except for the Monkees, you stay!"

The people got to their feet. They ran out the door and the Monkees stood in a line in front of Doris. They gave him evil looks. The man was a day early. He had messed their plan up completely. Micky was wrong to be afraid of his friends. Rather he should have anticipated Doris' timing. They would have to manipulate him into their trap.

"Now Monkees....Where's my money?!" He demanded.

"We don't have it." Mike sighed stiffly, rolling his eyes.

"I don't think you heard me...where's my money?!!"He screamed pointing his gun into Mike's stomach.

Micky slowly made his way to a dangling streamer that when pulled would bring the rest of them down. Mike had signaled for him to do it with his eye roll. Mike stepped back away from Doris to move him into the trap. Doris took the bate. Mike worked fast. "Now!" he grabbed the gun. Doris fired and the bullet hit his foot. Mike screamed in pain but pulled Doris into an effective headlock. Micky pulled the streamers and the trap fell over them.

Mike and Doris were surrounded in a mesh of streamers that tightened at the bottom.

"Don't let me out." Mike insisted. "If I let go hell get out."

"Davy the police!"Micky yelled as he held the string tight.

"The joke is on you boys!" Doris laughed. "I've already called them here."

"What are you babbling about!?" Mike yelled.

"Oh no! Their coming to take us away!" Davy melted to the floor in dramatic tears.

"I told them that my precious daughter had been stolen. and that the culprits would be found at this address."

"You are despicable!" Peter yelled.

"Thank you." Doris smiled.
