Chapter 1- Movin' On
When I'm sure I gathered all my remaining belongings and dumped them into my overly stuffed suitcases, I take a glance at my now bare room. My room was the second largest out of the four different rooms in my house. I was lucky enough to get my own master bathroom and walk in closet. However, compared to my parents room, I'm in no position to brag since their room brought luxurious to a whole new level.
I walk over to my wall, stopping by the spot where the aqua paint dips inward, a dent caused many years ago. The wall used to be smooth until Norven, my twin, decided to ram into it with a rocket powered scooter wearing a helmet. After he crashed, I ran to our mom complaining my wall wqa ruined, while a dizzy Norven came waddling in.
Later that night, as a token of my gratitude for the new feature to my wall, I gave Norven a punch in the arm to let him know that what he did was not cool, but that we were still good. After a while we laughed about it as if it were no big deal from the start. I was always grateful for my relationship with my brother and having a twin in general.m Sure we'd get competitive with sports, always trying to out best each other, though our relationship had always been solid and loving. Unlike most brother/sister relationships, ours was playful and fun, each of us helping each other out when needed.
To think I'd miss this very dimple of imperfection would seem right, but I don't know what to feel. The pictures I had dangling from fairy lights strung around my compartment were no longer there, the gorgeous scene gone. This along with my furniture and large bookcase my father installed out of my request due to my vast collection of teen fiction, romance novels.
Just before anymore memories can come flooded back in, a knock was heard from outside my door.
"Come in," I call from half way across the room.
Norven strolls in carrying his phone in one hand, his other around the doorknob of the door. From behind him, my sister Kiana follows in. "You finished packing yet?" He glances at my empty room, this answering his question. "Or staring at that dent I added in."
I giggle and throw my arm over his muscular shoulders as he pulls my next to him. He played soccer ever since we were five, so he was always in shape. Barely as a freshman, he became captain because of how well he handled the ball. Preferably, I'd rather play football than soccer but I enjoyed short scrimmages with my brother even though majority of the times he'd wound up victorious.
"Yeah, I'm ready." I walk over to the door, Norven letting go of the handle where my own hand is replacing his own. I motion him to go ahead of me so he doesn't have to wait for my last few seconds with the room I've only ever possessed. But more importantly, my home.
"Don't worry, Nova," Kiana says cheerfully. "California won't be so bad." I smile and give her hug.
With one last glance over my surroundings, I slowly bring the door shut. "Good bye, home," I whisper through the crease that disappeared as I closed this door forever.
"For the last time, Norven," I say exasperatedly, "I don't want to watch this movie." We were already three hours into the flight and Norven was getting bored. He kept begging me to watch some lame movie which I refused to do. More than once.
"Me either," Kiana says, crossing her arms over her chest. She combs her long, manicured fingers through her hair. Unlike my brother and I, Kiana was the only one who got pure blonde hair from our mom, but other than that, our features are identical.
Norven eventually gives up with a sigh, looking away from me with annoyance clearly wedged onto his normally smiling face. I nudge him with my shoulder, receiving a grunt from him. I roll my eyes at him, a smile edging its way onto my features.
"How about we watch something else? Why not Criminal Minds? I love that TV show," I suggest helpfully. Thinking about it now, love may be putting it lightly. I'm obsessed with the shows, suspense and all. Another one popped into my head just then. "Ooh how about Full House?"
"Yeah, let's," Kiana agrees with a smile.
Norven scrunches his nose up at the thought of watching the old TV shows. "What is this the 70s?"
"80s," Kiana and I both correct him. "Or Fuller House. According to critiques of my friends, it'll give you a good laugh and it's clever," I say.
"Whatever. The point is that's a negative." He shakes his head, lost in thought as he ponders over the various movie choices. Kiana frowns at his decline, but doesn't give up.
"You're always such a bummer, Norven." Kiana pulls out her compact mirror, redoing her lipstick. "No wonder you don't have a girlfriend."
I let out a loud laugh causing people to stare, and a glare from my mom. "Boom." I high five Kiana.
"Excuse me, amateurs," Norven says, inching forward in his seats so he can face us. "I had multiple girls drooling over me and could have anyone I want."
"Which is why you never stuck with one for long," I start, "because you knew you'd lose her anyways." Next to me, I hear Kiana cough, bits of her ice tea spilling from her mouth. She grabs a napkin and starts dabbing at the corners of her lips, but the smile there is unmistakable.
Norven shakes his head. "It's called sampling. I try whichever girl I want and see which one I prefer more."
Kiana and I share a scowl. "Gross," I reply.
"You're such a player," Kiana says, her head shaking in ashamed like she can't believe we're all tightly related.
"Only the best," Norven smirks with a wink in accompaniment. Kiana and I roll our eyes but giggle anyways. He clears his throat, weI look at him expectantly. "Now the movie?"
I give him a tired look. "The café is open. Go raid it while I put on a movie," I say, already shoving him out of his seat next to me. He looks half amused and not completely convinced so I keep trying, "Besides, that's one of the perks of flying in first class, so you might as well." Kiana nods.
Norven gets out and turns to me before leaving. "Anything you guys want?"
I turn on my phone to find the time. 11:00. "Just get me a hot chocolate please," I answer with a small smile. "Thanks."
"A new ice tea for me please. Ask for a strawberry mango one, thanks," Kiana gives him a smile, and twists in her seat so she could see me better.
"Mhm." Is all he says before he leaves behind the curtains leading towards the café. I often forget how wealthy my parents are and how they can get us nice spots on highly rated airline services, insuring us the 'best seats' as they say. Instead of the regular seats, we had our own private room, a leather couch wrapping around the wall, a small table in the middle, and a 42' inch flat screen TV.
"Now that he's gone," Kiana whispers even though Norven isn't here, "put on The Parent Trap." I smile because Norven hates the Parent Trap. According to him, he thinks it's stupid with the high unlikeliness of two twins separated at birth to fortunately meet up by chance and go through a switch. "Maybe he has something against twins," I whispered to Kiana when he first told us that.
"Good thing we aren't twins," Kiana whispered back, a smile on her lips.
The beginning starts to play and Norven comes back with his own drink, my hot chocolate, and Kiana's ice tea. He leans down to pass our drinks to us, and scoots into his seat. When he sees Lindsey Lohan's face, he glowers at us.
Kiana notices and shrugs. "At least you're watching it with us."
"Your favorite sisters," I add, raising a brow and turning to face him to challenge I'm if he dares to deny it. He smiles and shrugs, raising his hands in surrender as if to say 'what can I say?'
I take a sip of my luke warm winter drink, leaning back into the plush couch and enjoy the movie. Half way through it, I could swear I saw Norven crack a smile when he thought none of us were watching him.
~~~~~
I didn't realize I fell asleep until I hear Norven's voice asking me to wake up, his hands shaking my arms. I sleepily swat at his arms mumbling, "five more minutes."
"Come on, Nova. Our plane landed." With one tug, he's got me up and trailing behind him. I groan and rub my eyes as we make our way off the plane to find our parents and Kiana who according to Norven, are already waiting for us with our bags. He told me they left a few minutes before we did so they could make sure we got all our luggage without running into any inconveniences.
The sunlight streams in from the planes windows, forcing me to squint out at the outside view. From what I can tell, there's tall, lean palm trees littering the streets of the LAX airport. We are greeted with a chilly breeze that blew through from the sliding doors leading to the drop offs and pick ups.
I follow Norven who waved to our parents and sister as he headed over to them. I grab my silver, ginormous suitcase from my parents and wheel it in the direction my family are walking too--straight to a cab. Dad had sent a U-Haul truck with the rest of our belongings, specifically furniture, and our individual cars to be delivered straight to the house. By the time we got there, they should be there waiting for us to arrive.
As I am about to step into the cab, I take a glimpse of LA. It really looks beautiful. Kiana reaches for my hand and gives it a light squeeze. "New home, we're coming for you," I say with a smile and feel Norven smile next to me.
