Death Note: Light Yagami {Modern AU}

☆WRITTEN IN THE SPRING OF 2018☆

A/N: Okay, so, this IS actually going to be pretty short. Therefore, I don't want to over-explain it, BUT, simply put, this is about you, a "criminal" taking a lie detector test during high school. (I know Death Note is already modern, and Light starts out in school but this is like, what I'd call, "our" world, so no Shinigami, just nerds. Plus Mello and errybody's there. I wasn't sure what else to call it.) It also may be the stupidest thing ever~ 89.9272723% likely.

"So, you're telling me you have no idea why we won the match?"

"Nope." You crossed your arms, huffing. "I don't." You smiled. "Not one."

"But she's terrible at tennis!"

"Yeah, come on! You cheated!"

"No!" You lied. "I did not!"

"You know," a boy with shaggy black hair offered a solution, interrupting from across the court. "I have a way we can be sure. Hey!" He called out to your partner. "Light! Does your father still have that thing?"

"Yeah! He does."

"Good." The two others nodded. "We didn't lose for nothing, then." They looked you up and down. You ignored them, narrowing your eye in place of embarrassment, wondering what it was that L was talking about.

"I don't like this." You tugged at your arms. "I don't like this!" You leaned forward. "This isn't cool, man!"

"Oh calm down, {Y/N}." A girl giggled. "It's not going to hurt you."

"No." You didn't laugh. "Misa. I don't think the machine will hurt me, but I hardly trust those two." You looked back over your shoulder.

"Hey!" One shot back. "Near and I are nice. We won't do anything immoral."

"Oh yeah, right."

"Shut up, Matt." The boy on the right tugged at his hair, tied back in a feminine fashion, an order from your teachers for the lab you were now in, hooked up to that thing your friend was talking about.

"Some friend." You swore.

"Hey." You felt a hand on your shoulder. "It's just a lie detector test. Your hands aren't bound. You're not being executed. Calm down." You looked up.

"Yeah." You didn't realise you were blushing. "Thanks, Light."

"Okay." The door opened. "I'm back. We don't have much time before Professor Watt gets back so let's just do this."

"Isn't it Watari?" You broke in amidst the eager responses.

"Stop stalling." He raised his head. He'd finished reading whatever was on the papers before him. "Okay. Now, let's see how honest you are." He raised an eyebrow. "Light." Everyone looked at you. "Take your hand off her shoulder." You heard someone clear their throat. "It'll mess up the results."

"What is your first and last name?"

"{F/N, L/N}."

"Where do you go to school?"

"To-oh Academy."

"Who are your friends?"

"You, Misa, Nate, Mikhail, Matt, and Kiyomi. Oh! And Matsuda. Oh, and uh, Sayu and Light."

The once green flash turned red.

"Wait." L tried to calm everyone down. "We don't know which name set it off." He sighed. "Lying right away, are you?" He shook his head. "Okay. Let's get to the bottom of this. We'll start in reverse order."

"Is Light Yagami your friend?"

"Yes, at least, I want him to be."

Again, the buzzer flashed red.

"Do you dislike him?"

"No." It sounded like a question.

"The light was green that time." You weren't sure who said it.

"Solid observation, genius." You heard a slap, meaning it was more than likely Near, or Nate, or, whatever his preference was that day.

"Ow!" He whined. "Mello! Don't hit me!"

So, Near, then.

"Be quiet!" Light scolded.

The meter did something funny.

"Hm." L noted. "Your heart rate went up."

"No it didn't!" You yelled back.

The bulb flashed red again. You winced.

"Why did your heart rate go up when Light spoke?"

"Yeah." Misa butted in. "Why did your heart rate go up?" She smirked, but you knew she was fighting something. You weren't sure how she felt about you last year, and you were sure she'd dislike you if one of your secrets in particular was found out. "Do you like him?"

"Not like that! Not romantically!"

Again, the bulb buzzed, and a red glow filled the room.

"What?" Two or more people replied. Then they all started asking you things. All but one.

"Do you like him?"

"No! I already said that!"

Red. Then Green.

"Do you wanna date him?"

"No!"

Red.

"Do you wanna kiss him?"

"Absolutely not!"

Red.

"Sleep with him?"

"Helllll no!"

Red.

"Marry him?"

"No! Stop! Aren't we supposed to be asking about the game?"

"This is more interesting." L stated. "I did not know you were interested in Light-Kun like that."

"I'm not!"

Red.

"Fine!" You stood up, ripping the tags from your arms. "I'm leaving." You looked back over your shoulder. "By the way, I did cheat. I'm not saying how, though. I'm gonna do it again."

You slammed the door, and just as your teacher was walking back down the hallway.

You stuck your head out of the girls bathroom. You'd avoided attentending Physics, then Chemistry by claiming you'd discovered an unpredicted "woman issue" and your male educator(s) let you leave immediately after your forced return from flight.

You relaxed. Everyone was at lunch. The coast was clear.

"Hey, {Y/N}." You cursed as you heard a familiar voice. "Can I talk to you for a second?"

Your heart beat faster than before, and you were decidedly happier than the last time it did so.

"So wait, you like me?"

"Yep." He smiled. You did the same. It was hard not to. "I have for a while."

You moved closer. "Thats...good." You were nervous.

"Hey, {Y/N}." You looked up at him. You'd lowered your gaze. "Have you ever done any of the things they were asking you about?"

"No." You told the truth. "Not one."

"So you've never kissed anyone?"

"Nope." You looked back down.

"Do you want to?"

You looked back up, and nodded. He moved closer to you this time, and you were certain that even running the mile in your final course of the day wouldn't make you feel as winded as you did in that moment. You sensed arms around your waist, then a hand in your hair. You forgot about what was angering you as you leaned forward into an embrace. As your lips met, you heard a loud, jarring sound.

"Damn it." You pulled away, speaking at the same time. You both stood up.

"Alright then." Your face was red. "Let's go take that stupid test in stupid History class."

"I actually like History, {Y/N}."

"You like every subject, Light."

"I like you."

"I know." He laughed and threw his arm around you.

"Well, I know you like me."

You play punched him, mocking what someone else had said before.

"Solid observation, genius."

You both laughed as you walked back through the doors of your school, smiling as bright as the midday sun shining through the high glass widows.

A/N: So, I thought that was cute (and sappy -painfully so- but cute nonetheless)! Lemme know what you think, too if you can. I didn't really edit it much so I apologise for any errors. I also know I probably used American school customs instead of Japanese ones, but eh, I speak of what I know. *salutes flag while twirling my gun to BADABAPAPA "I'm Lovin' It"* (If you get that reference you may join us). Thanks again!

Side note: I actually really miss high school. To those still in it, even if you hate it, cherish it! It's something you'll miss, even if all you miss about it is being a kid.

The real world sucks. (@ ̄ρ ̄@)
