Chapter Thirty Five- It Was Really Nothing

"William doesn't know, does he?"

Dahlia unlocked the door to the house and Roy followed her. She took off her shoes and flung herself onto the couch.

"Nah. He had left before I came looking for you."

"I'm really sorry you had to see me like that," Roy said quietly.

"How bad...did you want to die?"

"It was a spontaneous decision."

Was it?

"How so?"

"I was very, very drunk, Dahlia. And very, very sad."

Dahlia scooted towards the edge of the couch. She put her hands on Roy's knees and slowly rolled him closer to her. Roy raised an eyebrow. She'd had her hands on him several times already.

"I'd talked to someone before very important to me. I didn't appreciate all they had given me. And I kind of deserved their reaction."

"A lady?"

"A hurricane."

"Tell me."

"She was a nurse I met after the accident. Turned out to be my girlfriend's sister. Was my girlfriend."

"What did she look like?"

"Oh, MacKenzie. Blonde hair. Yellow like straw, but soft like silk. Her eyes were big and bright. She broke into my apartment." Roy smiled. "She saw me at my weakest. Still put up with my bullshit."

"You should see your face when you talk about her," Dahlia said.

"Yeah."

"She looks different than me."

"Polar opposite," Roy said.

"So you don't have a type."

"A type?"

"Y'know. Who you date and whatnot."

"Guess not. Alice was a brunette."

"Who's Alice?"

"The girl I proposed to."

"You proposed to someone else? Two proposes in two years! Wow. I guess you got over me pretty fast..."

"I didn't get over you, Dahlia. I moved on."

"Maybe MacKenzie is over you," Dahlia said bitterly.

"She's not," Roy snapped.

"How do you know so?"

"She told me. Also, you got two proposals in two years, and you accepted one. And then you lied to a shrink that you're already married to me."

"You got me to break you out of a hospital when you clearly weren't ready to leave!"

"I was ready, alright."

"What if they come looking for you? They will lock you up. They might lock me up."

"You willingly participated."

"You kind of forced me."

"You could've easily said no, just like when I proposed to you."

"Maybe I didn't want to make the same mistake twice."

Roy's brow creased. Dahlia fumbled with her engagement ring. The front door opened and she jumped.

"You guys? You're back early." Dade embraced Roy unexpectedly, squeezing him. He grunted. "Oh my god, Roy. I saw you die. I saw you fucking die."

"I'm okay now," Roy assured him.

"You threw up, punched a doctor, and then passed back out."

"Yeah people keep telling me that so you don't need to remind me."

"I told Whit we decided on a spontaneous camping trip."

"Real creative. Like I can roll around in the woods very well."

"He bought it."

"He hates me, he doesn't even care."

"I doubt he hates you," Dahlia said.

"Anyway I said we'd be back tomorrow or the next day. I don't know. If you wanna go out for drinks or something. You can crash here."

"Drinking probably wouldn't be a very good idea," Roy smirked.

"So like one beer."

"How bout no."

"Suit yourself." Dade patted Roy on the shoulder. "You still look kinda pasty anyway."

"Eh. Lots of pills."

"I won't ask, I won't tell..."

"It's only fair."

"I need to go pick up a piece of equipment for the tractor. I'll be back in a few. Will you guys be okay alone?"

"Yeah!" Dahlia exclaimed.

"Yeah..." Roy said.

"Look after our friend, Dahlia." Dade rolled his eyes and smiled.

"So you're not going out later?" Dahlia asked after Dade had left.

"Nah."

"You want to?"

"Not really."

"We can do something fun here, I guess."

"Like?"

"I don't know, talk and stuff."

"We can do that."

"Do you want to?"

"Absolutely, Dahlia."

"Actually, I kind of have an idea."

"Is it as outrageous as escaping from a hospital whilst under suicide watch?"

"Um, not quite. But we can't go yet."

"Go..."

"Yeah we have to wait awhile. We have some hours to kill. Let's do something. Unless you're still tired."

"Rather."

"Same," Dahlia sighed. "I might take a nap, actually."

"It's your house."

"Yeah I'm gonna take a nap."  Dahlia stood up and stretched. "Ahh." She began walking towards her bedroom. She stopped and looked back at Roy. "Aren't you coming?"

"What?"

"For a nap. You said you were tired. The couch must not be too good on your back."

"Um..."

"I'm tired, come on."

Dahlia opened the door to her bedroom and Roy reluctantly followed her. She shut and locked it tight. Papers and books were scattered around her room.

"You're a real librarian, huh," Roy commented.

"You too," Dahlia smiled.

"Barely."

Dahlia undid the flower barette in her hair and threw it on the desk. She lay down on the bed and sighed. Roy took that as his cue to follow her. She lay her head on his chest and pulled her knee up to his waist like she had done in the hospital.

"Mmm."

Roy said nothing.

"Goodnight."

"It's two in the afternoon."

"Yeah but we're sleeping so it's goodnight."

"Whatever you say."

Roy closed his eyes, but he was not sleeping.
