Alright, so I'm never accurate, so let us just say John got his first bass for his fourteenth birthday. We'll go with that. Yeah.

  John's pov

I rolled out of bed the morning of the Nineteenth of August and dressed myself in a pair of black trousers and a button up. The trousers had become a little short, prompting the question, 'are you preparing for a flood, John?' to be frequently asked. I was becoming ill with it.

The bathroom door creaked as I pushed it open. I spotted my toothbrush and squeezed a pea sized glob of toothpaste on the bristles. I began to clean my pearly whites and hum simultaneously. I spat my toothpaste out and rinsed it down the drain.

Julie entered our common washroom and pulled a brush through her hair, in an attempt to calm it. I flattened mine to my head and walked down the hall to the dining room, where my mother had a plate of cheese on toast and a cuppa tea on the table.

I smiled and hugged her. She kissed my temple and whispered, "Good morning birthday boy." I sat at the table and took a bite of my breakfast, wondering what I could possibly get for my birthday.  "Have a wonderful day at school, and you can open presents when you get home."

I entered the academy and found my way to my locker, that had been wrapped in colorful paper. " Happy Birthday, my friend! " Lance chuckled.

"Why did I ever give you my locker combination?" I muttered, loud enough for him to hear.

"Tear it off", he instructed. I picked at the corners of the wrapping paper to see a record sleeve. He's gotten me a copy of (insert album here) I hugged him and thanked him profusely.

As classes wrapped up, I picked up my bag and clutched it to my chest. I began to sprint home so I could tear into my presents.

Julie sat on the sofa, holding a little brown paper bag. "Here, John," she squeaked. " I bought them myself! " I separated the flaps and saw a small plastic bag of guitar picks.

I pulled her into a big hug and whispered, "Thank you, Julie." My Mom walked in the room, giving me instructions on where I would find my present. I first saw an amplifier under the kitchen table. Then a pack of bass guitar strings. And then the glorious bass guitar!

"No way" I trailed off, jaw hanging on its hinges. "Mom, how'd you get the money for this?"

"I just scraped some together, and sold some old clothes and such we didn't need anymore." I ran to her and wrapped her in my arms, tears streaming down my cheeks.

"Thank you, Mum. Thank you so much," I sobbed.

"You and Jules are the best kids a mother could hope for. Now go on, play something.

I plucked the strings and dove into some random notes. The rest was history.
