Why We Still Need Feminism

Ok, feminist time. Rant ahead. First, please don't call yourself 'equalitarian', it's absurd. Equality is in the package of feminism, but that's not enough.
Also, those who want to make you believe feminism is against men are either misogynists or feminazis. Throw them in the trash.

In most developed countries, gender equality is written in the law. In practice, is it effective though? Is it? No? Then please take the time to read this.

Light starters. True scene I lived this very evening:
Mom : 'this journalist shouldn't wear lipstick so bright, it makes her already plump lips look even bigger and that's bad'.
The female journalist : 'it's unbelievable how women are still broadly evaluated and promoted on their physical appearance'
Mom, genuinely : 'exactly! We live in a sOciEtY. Feminism!!1!1!'

When I told her that this hyperfixation on women's looks hypocritically went against the mere concept of feminism, she replied that it was the way the world was. That, to access jobs with responsibility, women have to meet these physical expectations and obey the established rules. Else those women get fired and they hire a girl who doesn't mind wearing stillettos all day long. Else they hire girls who wouldn't bitch about being paid as much as men. Who wouldn't barge in with her costly, outrageous feminism.

Keep in mind that this misogynistic mindset is vastely taught from generations to generations. By women. Women who are by nature more entitled to teach how women should be regarded.

I think people don't realize how misogyny is deeply and vastely internalized. And above all people don't realize how misogynistic women can be. In the everyday life they compete with each others, judge heavily, hold exaggerate grudges, and notoriously stab each others' backs.

And reading this last paragraph, you'd think I'm putting all this misogyny on women's backs. Well, face it ladies, to a certain extent we have our part of responsibility in this. My last example showed that... Unbearable, tacit and seemingly everlasting consensuse of domination.

And that's patriarcate's biggest success.

Let me get your attention on one thing. If you say the word 'patriarcate', you'll most likely always get some eyes-rolling and snickering, as though you were a living caricature. And that's the problem.
For millenniums, humanity has been a male-based and male-dominated society. Check out the awful things that still go on around the world. No need to be in extreme cases like in Afghanistan (let's have a thought for all those poor females who are going to suffer hell). You can just check social media, you'll find plethora of awfully misogynistic Instagram comments, from 'civilized' people. What a civilization.

I have read a comment from a man saying that if he got hit by a girl, he would hit back, because 'equality'. Why not, although I would be very concerned for a man who would feel threatened in his manhood by this. His argument was, 'if you want equal rights, you gotta be treated equally'.

Okay so first, give me my effective equal rights, then we'll talk.

Let's consider them granted for a second. No one ever said men and women were equal on a biological aspect. Men are, on average, taller, larger than women; and globally stronger. But equality is not a matter of strength, we're not animals, for god's sake. The times where those who dominate were simply the strongest are over. Or maybe they aren't, and that is the problem. If you can't comprehend this, maybe you're not as civilized as you thought.

The anonymity of social media helps those speeches and maybe this man wouldn't dare say that in real life, but the mindset is there. It spreads, it's transmitted.

So yes, we still need feminism, yes we do, and not only in the most critical regions. As I said, it's a matter of mindset and education, not only a matter of regime, geography, or policy. Throwing feminism in the trash now would be a terrible mistake.

People who are used to this man-based system will accuse those who speak up about it of overdramatizing, because women (not only, of course) didn't use to be so loud about these issues. Same for periods, what's all that drama for, huh? How bad can it be, haha! /j

It can be as painful as a heart attack.
Women's nervous system allows a higher tolerance to pain compared to men, so their bodies, heart and mind can undergo the horrible pain of childbirth but also the cyclical period pains. It's not because women have gone through that for so long that it was never an issue.

And for those dear gentlemen who dare qualify it as 'exaggeration', ask your mothers, your sisters and your wives about everything I've been saying so far.

It's always easy to criticize a reality that you have never lived.

Answering to misogyny accusations with 'not all men', is the same logic as answering 'BLM' with 'all lives matter'.
Reacting to feminism with... meninism or whatever abomination this is, is the same logic as reacting to 'BLM' with 'blue lives matter'.

It's not about you, don't reverse things. Ifyou feel targetted and concerned with these accusations of hyperfixating on women's appearances, of disregarding period pains and lessening issues women have to face... then feminism isn't the problem. You are! :)

So yes, we could compare the feminist struggle to the fights against racism - to a certain extent, of course. Yes, things used to be so much worse for women, for black people... We got a few rights and we're not as opressed as we used to, why are we still unhappy lol /j
Read again what's above.

It's unbelievable that 52% of the world population is systematically overlooked around the world. You get one chance out of two, no matter where you come from, how loved you are, how rich or famous your family is; to be born with what too many people in this world still call the 'gentle gender' - 'the weak gender' in French and Italian, the 'fragile gender' in Spanish and Portugese.

Feminism is one of the only things that gave women rights in the first place. Rights are never acquired for good. Things can regress, sometimes faster than we think. It's a continuous fight and we need everyone to stand up for it. So much still needs to be accomplished. You'll see, the best is to come if we really want it.

Yes, we still need feminism in 2021.

Sorry for mistakes I may have made!

Also, sorry for making this speech a little too binary in terms of gender, I wanted to simplify the arguments, also I don't think I was entitled enough, even as an ally, to speak in the name of enbies, who have struggles on their own of course.
Same goes for racism; I only evoked it because it simply wasn't my topic here but obviously it should never be minored.

I'd be glad to debate if you guys want to, or if you have anything to share, anecdotes, thoughts, opinions, questions :)
