Well Comrades, We Had Our Fun
Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 announced that their final performance on September 3rd.
I wish I could say that I'm surprised.
Honestly, after the whole casting controversy with Mandy Patinkin, I had suspected that this would happen, but I was hoping that it would be way later rather than sooner. Looks like it was sooner then.
I know this musical wasn't exactly everyone's jam, but it's such a shame that it has to go out like this. The theatre was absolutely gorgeous; it was unlike anything else the musical theater business had created for their audiences on Broadway. The cast interacted so much with their audience and had so much fun with them. And the ensemble- oh the ensemble. They're positively wonderful. I'm glad that they were honored with the ACCA Award for Outstanding Broadway Chorus before this whole mess happened.
Did you know that this show is what brought Phillipa Soo and Lin-Manuel Miranda together for the first time? Mr. Miranda attended a showing of Great Comet when it was still off-Broadway, and was so impressed with Ms. Soo's performance and the rest is history. I also find it so funny thinking about how Dave Mallory also saw the musical off-Broadway and gave it raving reviews, not knowing that he would soon be taking on one of the lead roles himself. Isn't life funny that way?
I'm so sorry that your show's legacy is being sealed this way, Great Comet cast and crew. May you all go on to bigger and brighter things, bigger and brighter than the moon.
