Chapter 3: A New Foe

It took a few minutes for the virus cloud to settle. But by then, the damage had been done. All around me, I hear loud coughing. Instantly, images of the facility go through my mind. Fear sweeps through my very being. No... no not again... not again! No! This can't be happening! This can't be happening. Suddenly, I feel my breath become shallow and quick. My heart beat rises until I can hear it pounding in my ears. Suddenly, I feel myself spinning. Images of the facility wash through my mind like a tidal wave. Wave after wave of images washes out my surroundings. Me being chased by zombies, being surrounded by them. The fear I felt. Tristan chasing me with a sword to my throat. His body floating in the water. All of these images made me quake in terror. However, despite these oppressing waves, a thought, a question shown through. Why am I afraid? This isn't the facility, I'm not there anymore. So why am I afraid of what happened months ago? I don't know. But what I do know is that I need to snap out of this. I must. I have to focus on here and now.

I turn around towards the sound of the coughing. On the floor, Agent Jackson coughs loudly. As she coughs, black barnacles spread throughout her body. If I don't help her soon, she will die and reanimate. And I don't want to have to deal with one more zombie. But why should I help her? She was going to arrest me. And if help her, she may try to arrest me again! I take a deep breath. If I don't help her, she could die. And her death would be my fault. Avoiding jail shouldn't cost a life. Immediately, I rush to her aid. My hands reach out and touch her face. Sparks fly from her body. Warmth starts to surround me until the sparks are gone. When the sparks dissipate, Agent Jackson's body is back to normal. The barnacles that grew on her body begin to fall off. Soon, she awakes.

"What... happened?" She asks, her voice trailing off.

"The Plexions launched a missile filled with their virus to our school. It exploded. You were infected and I healed you." Agent Jackson gets up. Her body slowly moves up until she is standing.

"You... healed me?" I nod. When she gets up, I go around the office and try to heal others. Some I managed to save, others I was too late. After I went around the office, I came back inside the room. Wearily, my eyes scan the school grounds. Just looking for any signs of zombies. As I was looking, Agent Jackson spoke to me.

"Who are these Plexions?"

"Well, you know those aliens that made that broadcast about Rain Everest? That's them." My eyes continue scanning for zombies. It takes ten minutes for someone to turn into a zombie. I could go over to the cafeteria and heal people. But there are so many students, I might end up just trapping myself. I'm no use dead. And besides, those zombies in the cafeteria are nothing compared to what the whole city must be like. If the virus missile exploded here, more likely than not it reached the city.

"So you're saying, malevolent aliens from outer space dropped a virus on us. Why?" Agent Jackson's question pierced me like a knife. Why did they do this? Was it because of me? No. They can't possibly know where I am. But then again, they have been sending their agents here. It can't be a coincidence that they've shown up here these past few months. Maybe they do know I'm here. And maybe they sent this missile to flush me out. Plexions... they truly are the worst of the worst. Suddenly, Agent Jackson went quiet. Slowly, her hand pointed out the window. I knew what was there. I've fought them before. Zombies slowly started to pour out of the cafeteria. I figured they would be out soon.

"What are we going to do?" Agent Jackson asked. Her voice went from a regular voice to a whisper.

"Agent Jackson, you need to leave. I may have healed you. But those zombies will attack and try to infect you. I'll distract them." But Agent Jackson wouldn't have it.

"No. I can't leave you here! You need to leave too. Look, I won't arrest you..."

"This isn't about that. If you don't leave now, you won't live to see tomorrow. Go!" When I said these words, I was immediately reminded of Tristan. He sacrificed himself to save me from those police officers. Now I'm sacrificing myself to save Agent Jackson from these zombies. I guess I now know how Tristan felt. Agent Jackson looks at me. Her eyes plead with me to reconsider. I understand her wanting me to come with her. After all, I wanted Tristan to run with me a few months ago. But, I'm trying to save her life.

"Go!" Agent Jackson after one more minute of staring, finally complies. I open the window and she starts to run. When she runs, the zombies started to follow her. Immediately, I whistle. I can't let them follow her. The zombies turn their attention toward me. I step outside from the window. As I do, I pull a gun from out of my book bag. I know it's weird to have a gun in my book bag. But I would be crazy not to carry a gun with all these Plexion and zombie attacks.

I stepped out into the open, my gun raised. Immediately, the zombies turn their attention toward me. One after the other started running. But, just like at the facility, they couldn't go near me. My presence made their bodies erupt in sparks. However, this didn't stop the constant outflow of zombies. They kept coming. But even though their numbers were large, it didn't take long for all the zombies to finally die.

When they are gone, I breathe out a sigh of relief. Thank goodness for these powers! Otherwise I would have been a goner. I put my gun back in my book bag. Since the zombies are gone, I won't be needing this. I wonder if Agent Jackson left yet. My eyes scan for any missing cars. However, before my eyes could complete their scan, a spaceship suddenly appeared and landed near the cafeteria. Oh no, a spaceship could only mean one thing. And that one thing is a Plexion. When the ship lands, it opens up, revealing a Plexion. She was tall with the usual purple attire.

"Well well, if it isn't Rain Everest. How nice to finally make your acquaintance."

"A Plexion. Let me guess, they sent you here to get me?" The Plexion woman looks at me. Her bleeding green eyes give off a look of pure evil. I look into them, unafraid. This isn't who she is. The virus is controlling her. And I will free her.

"I was indeed sent to your pathetic planet. It's unfortunate that His Imperial Majesty wants you alive. I would have so delighted in seeing your execution" the Plexion woman says with disdain.

"Well that's too bad. I will free you. I promise!" The Plexion woman's expression changes. No longer is she looking smug. Instead, her face expresses her ferocious anger.

"Free me? You want to free me? How foolish! You've killed so many of us! I would rather die than join you!" The Plexion woman immediately charges toward me. On instinct, I step aside. She turns around, and again charges. How predictable! These Plexions always want to charge first. I stick my leg out and trip her. This sends her tumbling down. Immediately, I go for her face. But she picks up on this and touches my face. However this was a painful error. Immediately, her hands start to burn. Sparks fly into the air. With a look of terror, the woman now looks at her white hands. This is my chance! My hands reach for her face. When they touch, sparks fly from her body into the air.

"This isn't over! You won't stop what we have planned! I will die but my death won't stop us!" Soon, the black barnacles and coating on her skin disappear and the woman returns to normal. I check her heartbeat and find it stable. Good, she'll be okay. Now then, I need to find something to get out of here with. Should I try to get a car? No, they're probably all locked. But how am I going to out of here without a car? I look around for anything I could use. I can't use a car, but what about a spaceship? Quickly, I drag the woman inside the ship and go to the cockpit. I look at the buttons, uncertain of how I'm going to escape.
