CH 4: Unwanted visitors (edited)
Matthew silently sighed as Gilbert guffawed in the kitchen conversing with two guests, they were Gilbert's high school friends who got separated when they followed their own paths of their future. "So Roderich, I heard you were very famous in the classical music industry." Gilbert chuckled at the brunette man. "Yes I have been interested in that certain major since grade school." Roderich stated. "Oh but you should hear him live, it's so amazing!" a girl with lime green eyes and long silk brown hair exclaimed.
"Elizabeta you're always so positive, I guess Roderich is lucky to have an audience like you." Gilbert said with a smirk, Matthew who was in the living room was hearing their conversation not wanting to interrupt their reunion. "Of course, how about you? Have you found someone yet?" Roderich and Elizabeta eyed him with a dark glare. "U-uhm..yes! I'll call him right now." A nervous sweat formed on Gilbert's forehead. "Birdie come here for a sec! There's some people I want you to meet." He called out.
Matthew took a shaky breath and reluctantly got up from his comfortable position on the couch. "Coming." He quietly responded walking toward the kitchen with his tank in tow, he was reluctant to enter and nervously looked at his smiling lover. "Come here birdie, it's okay." He assured with open arms. "O-okay.." Matthew stammered and walked into the embrace hiding his face in Gilbert's shirt. "This is my birdie Matthew. Matthew these are my friends Roderich and Elizabeta." Gilbert introduced them. "Come on birdie let them see your beautiful face." He cooed teasingly.
Matthew blushed and reluctantly left the comforting embrace and faced the two people who sat at the table with shock filled gazes given to him. "H-how old are you Matthew?" Roderich asked which caused him to look down and fiddle with his tubes that tangled around his slim arm. "Nineteen..." he mumbled. "Don't get any ideas got it?" Gilbert warned jokingly and slung his arm over Matthew's frail shoulder pulling him to his chest.
"..you're a very lucky boy Matthew, congratulations Gilbert.." Elizabeta's eyes were dark as she glared at Matthew eyeing him from head to toe. "Thanks! I'm so happy to have him to myself." Gilbert nodded and placed a kiss on Matthew's cheek. "Come sit birdie have a drink with us." Gilbert sat him on a chair close to the uncomfortable looking couple who were still trying to process the many reasons why Gilbert would love someone like Matthew.
Matthew slid his tank under the table making sure to be cautios of where he placed it. "Honestly Gilbert, you shouldn't allow minors drink. It's illegal." Roderich sighed. "I know that, that's why I got him juice instead of alcohol." Gilbert placed a cup of grape juice in front of Matthew. "Mow don't go too crazy birdie." He laughed. "I won't." Matthew reassured with a small smile before taking a tiny sip from his cup. "How do you guys know each other?" Matthew looked up at the couple who instantly blushed at the question. "Ah well.."
Gilbert grew tense. "We were both his lovers in high school.." Elizabeta answered. "But it's all in the past now!" Gilbert forced a wide smile. "At least we're still all friends right?" Matthew frowned to himself feeling guilt weigh down against his chest. "Sorry, I'm really tired..it was nice meeting you two." He got up from his seat and trudged back to the living room pulling his tank. "Matthew wait." Gilbert grasped onto his wrist stopping Matthew at his tracks. "..I really am tired, honest." He turned to him with a faked tired smile.
"Just let the poor boy be Gilbert." Elizabeta frowned. "...is everything okay Matthew?" he asked, completely ignoring Elizabeta's warning. "Yeah, I'm fine." He mumbled and pulled his arm away from his lover's grasp. "I'll be in the living room." And with that said he was gone leaving everyone in the kitchen silent. "How did you meet such a boy like him?" Roderich asked. "Long story." Gilbert huffed.
He couldn't help but feel a pang in his chest when he replayed the current scene in his head, the frown placed upon his lovers delicate lips, and he could've sworn that he saw a glint of pain in his soft lavender eyes. "We got time." Elizabeta shook him from his thoughts. "Why is he the way he is? Is he ill?" They asked so many questions about Matthew talking as if he were some alien. "This is a very personal and sensitive topic.." he said between gritted teeth.
He heard shuffling in the living room and quietly checked up on Matthew to see if he was alright, he sighed when he saw his lover lying down on the couch curling up in a ball. "Is this a bad time?" Roderich called out. "We apologize for asking such immature questions." Gilbert frowned but quickly shook it off and forced a smile not wanting to scare away his 'friends' of course he admitted to himself it was a bit awkward seeing both his ex's at the same time under the same roof.
He was honestly surprised the house wasn't up in flames yet but seeing that they were both a couple made him somewhat uncomfortable, it was as if they were making fun of him or were trying to get back at him. "It's a bit early to sleep don't you think?" The sun was still up, well somewhat, the sky was gloomy and gray with a harsh cold wind. Gilbert sat back down on the table with the couple and once again heaved a sigh. "Well since you guys called this morning birdie and I began to clean up the place, it took a lot of time to be honest." He chuckled tiredly.
His lips were strained from his forced smile. "Well we wanted to tell you something, would you be interested in going to a party with us?" Elizabeta asked. "A party? Aren't we too old for parties?" Gilbert scoffed. "Seriously? Gil you're twenty-one, in fact we're all in our early twenties. Why not let loose for a while? You can even bring you're boyfriend." She suggested. "Well...fine I'll go. When will it be?" Gilbert happily sighed at the thought of spending some real time outside with his lover.
"How's tonight at ten at our place?" Roderich asked and handed him a paper with their address written on it. "S-sure that's fine, thanks." He nodded. "Well then we should get going then to get everything preprepared." He stood up and held Elizabeta's hand. "It was nice to see you again Gilbert. We'll see you soon, thank you for having us." They were both soon gone, leaving Gilbert with a lot on his mind.
He quietly went to the living room and sat on the ground leaning against the couch Matthew was sleeping on. "My awesome birdie, please wake up." He leaned over close to his ear and sent a warm breath at the nape of his neck. "Or will a kiss do?" he pulled away and pulled his unconscious lover into his arms. "My sleeping beauty." He leaned forward almost closing the gap between their lips. "G-gil." A small squeak came from the boy underneath him.
Gilbert blushed and quickly pulled back feeling a bit disappointed that he lost his opportunity to steal a kiss. "So close!" he cursed with a frown "Gil? Did they leave?" Matthew sat up with a light blush coloring his pale cheeks. "Yes, we also got invited to a party." Gilbert grinned. "A party? Are you planning to go?" he cocked his head slightly to the side it took Gilbert all his strength to stop himself from tackling Matthew with a tight hug.
"Yes, and I want you to come with me." He said as he held his hands. "...I don't know..." Matthew frowned and looked away. "What if people think I'm weird?" he mumbled in a glum tone. "I heard what your friends said too.." Gilbert grasped onto his hands. "Matthew, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Because no matter what you will always look beautiful in my eyes." He said in a hard tone looking into his soft purple eyes.
Matthew held his fierce gaze not being able to escape the tight grasp it held him in, his red ruby eyes pierced into his very soul. "I can't.." he gasped out and finally tore away from the dangerous gaze and its grasp. "Why not?" Gilbert frowned. "I..I guess I don't trust people?" Matthew stammered unable to find the courage to face his frowning boyfriend. "Don't trust people? What do you mean?" irritation began to set in. "I don't know, maybe it's the type of people?"
This time Gilbert let go of Matthew's hands. "Type of people? Are you saying my type of people are not trustful?" Matthew quickly shook his head. "I-it's not like that!" he exclaimed. "It's exactly like that! You don't even know anything about my type of people Matthew." Gilbert rose from the ground towering over the frightened boy. "That's not what I meant." Matthew trembled, not once had Gilbert gotten this angry, not once had he ever let go of his hand.
"I'm sorry, I said it wrong." He tried to explain himself but he never found the words to explain what he meant, his mind was jumbled as his fear and anxiety began to kick in. "Yeah, sure let's leave it at that." Gilbert muttered and turned away from him. "Look I understand you possibly felt uncomfortable with them here." He sighed as he remembered his friends asking many questions about Matthew, this time Matthew was the one to speak up.
"Why didn't you tell me they were your ex's?" he asked. "...I just...look it's none of your business okay?" Gilbert huffed. "I should've been informed about that! Why didn't you tell me? I'm not weak Gilbert! I'm not stupid either." Matthew's quiet voice was laced with pain. "I felt the ugly stares given to me while you weren't looking.." he mumbled.
Gilbert scoffed in annoyance. "You're making it up, I don't know why you dislike them, but listen when I say that they're not that type of people." He stated. "...yeah okay...I'll remember that." Matthew muttered and grabbed ahold of the handle from his tank keeping his gaze on the ground. "Thanks for the invite...but I think you'll be happier if you go alone." And with that he walked off into the extra guest room they had, and Gilbert could've sworn he saw the familiar glint of tears falling from Matthew's cheeks.
He bit his lip and stomped over to his room, anger still boiling within himself. "Was what he said really true?" he muttered as he paced around in the room. "No they wouldn't do that, it's probably just a phase he's going through." He reassured and went to the closet to grab a change of clothes. "If he doesn't want to go then he won't have to." He grabbed his phone and looked at the paper Roderich had given him, a phone number was written down under the address.
With great hesitation he dialed the number until he heard the familiar click. "Uhm h-hello? Yeah it's me Gilbert, look I was wondering if you can maybe.." he trailed off, he wanted to ask if what Matthew said was true, but he quickly shook his head and changed his mind. "You know what? Never mind it was a simple mistake that crossed my mind. I can't wait to see you later, sorry for the disruption. Bye." He hung up and threw his phone on the bed.
He looked at the guest room across from him. "I'm sure he can handle himself on his own." He shut the door and began to get ready for the party. Matthew sat alone on the cold empty guest bed. "Why doesn't he believe me?" he whimpered. "What was it that made him so upset?" he pulled his knees close to his chest and hid his face. "...why am I so imperfect?" tears slid down his cheeks once again and his shoulders shook with quiet sobs.
"Please forgive me Gil, we're all human aren't we? We make mistakes." He heaved a shaky sigh. "I guess I was the biggest mistake though.."
