Peyton Place: A Haiku Soap Opera [excerpt]
By David Trinidad

348
Just when you think you
can trust someone, they turn out
to be the Bad Seed.

349
I do not know which
to prefer: Shakespeare quote or
pillow fight after.

350
Stuffed bird and weirdo
behind desk—is Jack checking
into Bates Motel?

351
Rachel kidnaps the
baby, yes, but in preview
Betty and Rod kiss.

352
Something I learned long
ago, Connie: never turn
down a sedative.

353
Two policemen shoot
at and chase Chandler. All three
of them run like girls.

354
Leigh will one day win
Emmy, but not for losing
her mind on this show.

355
Here's Gena Rowlands,
Mrs. John Cassavetes,
much-needed fresh blood.

356
Relax, Rita won't
croak. Her weak heart will tick till
this soap gets canceled.

357
Jack escapes from jail
and takes off to do guest spots
on TV Westerns.

358
Whack! Nothing ends an
episode better than a
good slap in the face.

359
And nothing starts an
episode better than a
repeat of that slap.

360
"Again" (Fox standard)
is always playing at the
Colonial Inn.

361
Step right up, folks, and
witness Rod's imitation
of a barking seal.

362
This is just to say
Elliot ate an apple—
Golden Delicious.

JANUARY CONTEST –

The second prompt for our first contest of the new year has been posted and is open for submissions.  Please see our contest book for full details.

POEM-A-WEEK –

Our Poem-A-Week Challenge started anew, January 1st, 2020.  If you have been a part of this challenge in 2019 and wish to continue, let us know and we will put you on the participants list for 2020.

We now have a participation sticker, I will PM the link to everyone on the participation list.  If you are not on the list and want to participate or I missed placing you on the list, PLEASE PM ME and I will put your name on the list and send you a link for the sticker.  We will also have a "completionist" sticker and certificate at the end of the year for those who have completed the challenge.

ATTENTION:  There seemed to be some confusion concerning this challenge.  Let me try and clarify:

1. This is just a challenge, not a contest, participation is encouraged, not mandatory.

2.  All of the prompts given in the Chatter can be used for this challenge, but they are not mandatory either.  You can write your poems about anything you want.  We will be posting a specific Poem-a-Week prompt each week as an added twist to this challenge.  The twist being you only use the Poem-a-Week prompts for this challenge, but again IT IS NOT MANDATORY.

To participate challenge, all you need to do is create a book on your own profile or use one of your existing books, then let us know what book it is and start writing.  You can also send in your poems to include in our collection here.  Please PM us if you take on the challenge so we can add your name to the participants list.

Lyttlejoe's Busted Gulch Volume 13:

3Gun sent out some telegrams to see if he could find any more information about the newcomers in town, all reports were glowing.  None of it is sitting right with 3Gun, so he is going to have one of his deputies go check out their camp.  The Sheriff also asked Petra craft an amazing Christmas gift for CG.  We found out that Alec was working with someone to get Bella's horses and Alec's death has not deterred them from getting the horses.  Jake had a bit of a heart to heart with Jujube about Rue.  Between the talk and the drinks Jake had pretty well decided he couldn't give Rue what she wanted or deserved; he went to tell her as much. However, Jake found Rue in her room crying wondering if she would ever find love, he changed his mind and asked her for a second chance and Rue agreed.  Strop gave the Doc a stable gun for Christmas. Jake and Rue went on a second date.  It seemed to end well, both of them getting to know one another better.  Bruce participated in the secret Santa, against his will, by giving Unger a nail gun and nails.  It gave him an uneasy feeling to do something nice for someone.  Who would he be if he wasn't a criminal?

If you want to find out what's next, head on over to The Storytellers Saloon and check out Lyttlejoe's Busted Gulch Volume 13!!  Don't forget to add it to your reading list, new chapters are posted daily!

flash-fiction-forum

We are having our FFF Write-off to determine the Master of Flash for 2019. Starting today and lasting into January of 2020, we will be inviting past winners of FFF monthly competitions to send us a new story to add to the Masters of Flash collection. The collection already will include all the winning entries from all contests since September 2018, when the FFF was introduced.

Each winner will have the opportunity to send us a new story of their choice to include in the collection. We then encourage all writers to reach out to their followers and have them check out the entries in the competition, as the winner will be determined by fan votes.

The winner will be announced at the end of January 2020.

As part of the Pub-Verse of sites, we encourage all Pubbers to drop by the FFF and take a look. The Flash Fiction Forum has struggled to gather new followers and we ask ll Pubbers to support one of their sister sites.

Another form of a haiku is the haiku chain.  The haiku chain is a series of linked poems.  In the original form of the haiku chain, the last line of each stanza becomes the first line in the next stanza.  Here is an example of a traditional haiku chain.  This example is also a haiku round, because the as the chain continues the last line mirrors the first.
