Pub Chatter 6th Edition - February 16, 2020
Hello Friends, New and Old!!
We Welcome You to this Week's Edition of the Pub Chatter!!!
Let's start this week off with a Mini-Challenge!!! In the comments below leave ONE (at a time) Kenning and let's see if people can guess what you are talking about!
Thorkild's Song
Rudyard Kipling
There's no wind along these seas,
Out oars for Stavanger!
Forward all for Stavanger!
So we must wake the white-ash breeze.
Let fall for Stavanger!
A long pull for Stavanger!
Oh, hear the benches creak and strain!
(A long pull for Stavanger!)
She thinks she smells the Northland rain!
(A long pull for Stavanger !)
She thinks she smells the Northland snow,
And she's as glad as we to go.
She thinks she smells the Northland rime,
And the dear dark nights of winter-time.
She wants to be at her own home pier,
To shift her sails and standing gear.
She wants to be in her winter-shed,
To strip herself and go to bed.
Her very bolts are sick for shore,
And we—we want it ten times more!
So all you Gods that love brave men,
Send us a three-reef gale again!
Send us a gale, and watch us come,
With closecropped canvas slashing home!
But—there's no wind on all these seas,
A long pull for Stavanger!
So we must wake the white-ash breeze,
A long pull for Stavanger!

Lyttlejoe's Busted Gulch Volume 13:
Bella and Brody enjoyed the Gala exchanging gifts; Bella admitting that this was her best Christmas ever. Jacob went back to the Gala and danced a bit longer with several ladies. He had a chat with a young lady named Mary Sue, she invited him to spend the night with her, he declined. However, when he got back to the hotel and found out that Rue had gone to the Tent City with Billy, he proceeded to get drunk and made his way to Mary Sue's room. Denver, though enjoying the Gala, turned back to Talulah Grey, and how she became the woman she was. Bishop DoRito made it to town with gifts for the kids but he had some trouble getting there. A mysterious man named Slim helped the Bishop and ended up leaving 8 goats, as a gift for the town of Busted Gulch. 3Gun was still feeling uneasy about this person Land and whatever he is doing out west of town. He asked Buck to do some nosing around and see what he could find out. Not only is this person, Land, related to CG but rumor has it that "Land and Denver are cozy". Bruce is still trying to process the fact that Lou is gone and that he is now married to Brandy. Brandy returned to the house in Tent City, in a bit of a panic, asking about Bruce's twin. There may be trouble brewing. Jacob was late for his first day of work with Petra, Petra was not pleased. She picked up on the fact that he had not only gotten drunk after the Gala but had spent the night with someone. Petra tried to convince Jacob to have a talk with Billy, to find out what really happened.

PERSONAL ANNOUNCEMENT
FROM @orkneyman
In honour of the month of Love, I would like to extend an invitation to read my book "Love in all its Colours"
Because poetry is meant to be a layered-cake and a mask-of-many-face, the use of kennings in word-dancing is a natural fit. The kenning is another nail-mover in the poet's tool-pouch. Average everyday words can become so much more when they are turned into a kenning. The Norse poetry was littered with these brilliant turns of phrase:
"Frozen road"—ice-covered river.
"Green clearing"—shaman's gathering place.
"Northern kiss"—cold wind.
"River-bone"—rock.
"Ship of night"—the moon.
"Sky's black cloak"—nightfall.
"Swan-road"—the sea.
"Thor's laughter"—thunder.
"Whale-way"—the sea.
Here is an excerpt from THE RIDDLES OF KING HEITHREK
GESTUMBLINDI said:
"That would I have which I had yesterday;
heed what I had:
men's hamperer, word's hinderer,
and speeder of speech.
Aright read now this riddle, Heithrek!"
HEITHREK said:
"Good is thy riddle, Gestumblindi,
and guessed it is:
give him ale! That hampers many a man's wits; by it, some become talkative, but other men's wits are mazed."
(I encourage you to look up the full text of this poem, it has some amazing examples of kennings.)
This is but one example of how the Norse poets incorporated kennings into their writings.
The modern-day Kenning poem has exercised the kenning from its surrounding verbiage and condensed it into its purest form, using only kennings to present the poet's thoughts and ideas.
