Chapter 18 - Late Night Conversations
Nabi arrived to the studio. With a small knock on the door, Kwon Jiyong opened it and smiled down to Nabi who looked tired. He welcomed her in and she smiled at the emptiness of the studio unlike how crowded it was earlier. She always liked being in the studio. She found that it brought a lot of memories to her. Good memories that turned old and sad but she refused to make them out like bad memories when she had a blast in the recording studio back then.
"Just sit and rest. I'll be done as soon as possible." Kwon Jiyong said heading back to his spot on the table.
Nabi nodded. "It's alright. Take your time." She said as she sat down.
Nabi took out her phone from her bag and started texting her mom. She wanted to make sure she was alright and eating good. After staring at the screen of her phone and not getting a reply, she decided to read some books on her phone. As she sat there reading and scrolling down her phone, she started getting uncomfortable sitting in the same position for a long period of time. She was so uncomfortable that she kept moving around on the chair. She wondered if it was rude to lay down on the couch. She did it anyway. She sighed in content as she read from her last spot she left on in her story.
Meanwhile Kwon Jiyong was putting together the layers of his voice and the beat. He promised Teddy that he could take care of his song Red and put it together. So far, President Yang had passed all of Kwon Jiyong's songs that were complete. The few that President Yang had thought should be the main focus of the album were handed out to the choreographer to start on a dance routine. They needed it done ahead of time since the choreographer was also working with other groups and the dances for their songs, so when Kwon Jiyong's album is complete, the dance will be ready for his comeback.
Editing the song was always a difficult process, yet Kwon Jiyong always enjoyed it. He liked the outcome of the work he was able to put into it. When the finishing product comes together, and knowing that he was the one that put everything together, it was the best feeling in the world to him. Knowing that the hard work he put into his music, will always pay off. Teddy being there and completing a lot of the work, was always appreciated. He was amazing at doing what he does and he was amazing at being able to perfect music in the most impossible way. Kwon Jiyong looked up to him.
As soon as Kwon Jiyong clicked save on the file, he stood up and smiled happily. "Alright let me just pack up and..." he stopped mid-sentence when he turned around.
A smile crept up on his lips as he spotted Nabi laying on her side while sleeping on the couch. Her phone held loosely in her hands while she silently slept. Pieces of her hair fell in her face, covering most of it's surface. A small strand of hair that fell over her face, blew out with every breath she exhaled. Her hair was getting longer and her dark roots were showing more than it was when Kwon Jiyong had met her the first time. Looking at her, he thought back on the article he had read about the girl group Gem. He was sure it was Nabi who was the leader of the group who had disbanded. If the article was true, Kwon Jiyong wondered why Nabi ran out of the building crying. Why did she throw her career away? What was so important for her that she gave up becoming an idol? Throwing away all the work during her training years down the drain along with it. He couldn't figure it out. Why did she run out? Her career instantly shattered because of that. There had to be a reason so important to her that she dropped her career in an instant.
He continued to stare at her sleeping figure, but Nabi suddenly shot up, waking up from her sleep. Waking up so suddenly made Kwon Jiyong instantly turn around in shame at staring at her while she was asleep.
Nabi looked over to Kwon Jiyong who was standing with his back facing her. She stood up and wiped at her mouth. She had been drooling, which caused her face to turn up into disgust. Her cheeks burned, hoping Kwon Jiyong hadn't seen her sleeping or drooling. She'd die of embarrassment. Nabi is a light sleeper so she could feel herself deep sleeping in a place she wasn't supposed to be sleeping at. It was a useless talent that only helped her when sleeping in public or on public transportation.
"Jiyong-ssi." Nabi said after fixing herself.
"Huh?" Kwon Jiyong turned around with an innocent expression.
"Are you ready?" She asked.
Kwon Jiyong nodded and quickly packed his belongings. He placed all his things into his bag and got ready to leave. Nabi stood ready with her handbag over her shoulder. He walked over to the door and held it open for Nabi to walk out first. Although it was late, there were a lot of artists still working. Most of them were in the dance studio, but as they passed by the doors, most of them were laying or hanging around the open space of the dance studios. Trainees and other younger artists bowed as they passed Kwon Jiyong in the halls and the stairway. Some also bowed to Nabi but most of them wondered why she was walking side by side with Kwon Jiyong.
"Are you planning on going to the countryside this weekend?" Kwon Jiyong asked as they made their way out into the parking lot.
Nabi smiled brightly but tiredly. "Yeah." She pulled her jacket closer to her as the light breeze hit her. "I miss my mom and my sister is still here from Japan."
"Japan?" Kwon Jiyong asked as they approached his parked car.
Nabi nodded. "Yes. She's a transfer student in Japan but she's on break." Kwon Jiyong opened the door for her to get in. "Thank you." She smiled.
He went over to the driver's side and got in as well. "Wow! That's cool. How old is your sister?" Kwon Jiyong asked as he started the car.
"She's only fifteen." Nabi replied as he pulled out of the building.
"What's her name?" He asked.
Nabi smiled. "Nara. Park Nara."
"Nabi and Nara." He smiled while saying both of their names.
"What about you? Do you have any siblings?" Nabi asked.
Kwon Jiyong nodded. "An older sister. She's a clothing designer."
"Really?" Nabi asked surprised. "That's really cool. Do you often wear her clothes?"
Kwon Jiyong nodded. "Yeah, but she only uses me as a marketing tool." He jokes with a light chuckle. "Do you have anymore siblings?"
Nabi thought for a second before replying. "I have an older brother. But things are too complicated so I barely see him." She explained.
"Complicated? Between the two of you?" He asked as he drove down into the building's parking lot.
Nabi chuckled lightly. "Something like that. My family is a complicated subject for me to explain to people. People misunderstand a lot." Nabi smiled.
"I get it. What family doesn't have any complications? I won't pester you on your family if you're uncomfortable explaining them." Kwon Jiyong smiled down at her as he put the car in park.
Nabi smiled a thankful smile. "Thank you. It's not that I have deep secrets about my family, it's just that when I explain my family situation to people, everyone changes. Their views about me change, so I try my hardest to keep my family out of other people's ears." Nabi explained.
Kwon Jiyong nodded. "It's understandable." He smiles before getting out and going over to her side to open the door. "So does that guy know everything about you?" He asked as they made their way to the elevators.
"What guy?" Nabi asked confused.
"You know that guy who claims to be your husband." Kwon Jiyong says. "Does he know everything about you?"
Nabi chuckled. "When did you meet Joo Won?" She asked about this new found knowledge. "He hasn't told me anything."
Kwon Jiyong shook his head. "A few nights ago I believe. He was carrying you on his back and I asked who he was. He told me he was your husband."
Nabi shook her head and chuckled. "I didn't know he still did that." She smiled to herself.
"What do you mean? Is he really your husband?" Kwon Jiyong asked following Nabi into the elevator. "You know when I asked if you had a boyfriend, husbands count as well."
Nabi chuckled and waved her hand in a denying motion. "He's not my husband." She started. "We grew up together. He told any guy that approached me that he was my husband. He did it to warn guys off." Nabi smiled. "Last time I had known he did that was when I was in middle school and he was in high school. Which was the last time I've ever been in school."
Kwon Jiyong smiled at her opening up about herself. "The last time you've ever been in school?" He asked.
"Yeah, because I became a trainee. I had to get my GED quickly so I was done with school by the end of my seventh year." She smiled.
"You were trainee?" Kwon Jiyong asked ignorantly.
Nabi scoffed. "Don't act like you haven't heard the rumors about my trainee days in CJ Entertainment." She said as they passed the guard with a wave and headed to the second set of elevators. "I'm actually surprised you haven't asked me about it yet."
"I did hear them." Kwon Jiyong guiltily admitted. "However, if you told me otherwise, I would've believed you over anyone else." He said looking down at Nabi with a small smile pulling at the corner of his lips.
Nabi looked up in shock. She found his words to be heartwarming and it made her heart flutter. As Nabi stared into Kwon Jiyong's eyes, she felt her cheeks warm at staring into such beautiful orbs. He wasn't wearing any makeup but naturally, he's good looking. His eyes were a dark shade of brown, a very common color amongst people in the world. However, Nabi found his eye color to be the most beautiful of the color brown that ever existed. Meanwhile, Kwon Jiyong stared down at Nabi. There was no denying that there was a small spark between the two. Her eyes were always a beautiful asset of hers. They were big round button eyes that held unknown emotions. Her eyes made her look innocent and pure but he was sure she wasn't all that since she also looked like she's been through some things growing up. The two continued to stare at each other for what felt like hours when in reality it was only a few seconds. They both instantly broke eye contact the moment the elevator door dinged open.
Nabi giggled nervously as she got in. "Thank you. Even though the rumors are sort of true." She shrugged off.
"Everyone has their reasons. I'm sure you had yours." Kwon Jiyong said pressing a button. "Don't let those rumors let you down. Just keep smiling." He said smiling at Nabi. "Like this."
Kwon Jiyong took his chances and reached out to squeeze Nabi's cheeks, lifting them up into a force smile. Her eyes were shocked as he did so and she couldn't help but smack his hand and laugh loudly. She was sure that she looked stupid when he did that to her face. She couldn't help but laugh out loud and hold her stomach while doing so. Her shoulders shook violently and it was making Kwon Jiyong laugh. It was his first time hearing her laugh hard and it was the cutest laugh he's ever heard. It was so contagious that he found himself laughing loudly.
"Just like that." He said after his laugh was dying down. The elevator doors slid opened on Nabi's floor and Kwon Jiyong waved his hand out of the elevator. "Your floor." He said with a Korean historical accent.
Nabi giggled. "Thank you. I'll see you tomorrow." She said waving as she turned on her heels and left.
Kwon Jiyong shook his head and smiled as he pressed the button to Big Bang's dorm. That smile stayed with him all night and until he fell asleep.
