Portal Falls- Eva

Eva shivered under her blanket. The last thing they send with a Brokenhorn. She called the bushes around her to grow taller, to block the wind. She heard the familiar rustling, and the wind faded out of her hollow. She peeked around the blanket. It was almost pitch dark in the Deepwoods. She grew a glowberry out of the ground for some light.

She shivered again, though not from the cold. The branches above her blocked out even the tiniest of starlight, and the trees were dark and foreboding in the night. She gently touched her broken horns and winced. It was the lowest a Daer could get.

Breaking her horns was the last time she would ever climb a tree. She had been afraid of them all her life, but when dared, she finally climbed one. When she fell, the branches, under her command, caught her, but in the process broke her horns. The kids around her had sat there, stunned that she had broken them. She had cried, but as tradition, they shunned her, pretended like she didn't exist.

She had always been an outcast. she had unusually dark fur, she had never had freckles, unlike all young Daer. Her hair was lighter than her fur, and because of the fall, she had a scar down her face. Most of all, she was afraid of heights, which is why her house was on the ground. She was the only Daer in more than a hundred years who had their house on the ground.

The village Shunned her, like every other Brokenhorn. She was sent with directions to a village and blanket. She had lost the directions. Even her own brother, Owl, had ignored her for the short time she stayed afterward, which made her tear up just thinking about it. Unfortunately, her Birthmagic was weaker after her Break. The horns where the source of power for all Daer, and so when broken, the Birthmagic would fade.

She turned off the glowberry and closed her eyes, listening for the gossip of the forest.

New. They whispered. Human. Friends with village. Scientist. Wings. They said, sending words through the rustling of the leaves or creak of the trees. Aha! Eva thought. There was her revenge. Most Daers would be sad about being shunned, but she was angry, and she knew just how to get her revenge.

She had to find that human. Her energy was higher than Daers, according to the forest. She would use that energy to make her more powerful... to get revenge. She threw the blanket off her head and stood up to ask the trees where to go.

She asked them to give her a needle and thin vines. Taking the black blanket, she turned it into a hooded cape, to hide her broken stumps of horns. The trees made a cage with a lock that only she could open. She grinned. Revenge. Isn't it sweet? The poor village won't see her coming.
