Chapter Two
TW: Mentions of Abuse and Trauma
Remus couldn't have stopped his tears if he tried.
Patton and Logan shared an alarmed look before Patton moved forward and placed his hand on Remus' shoulder. "It's okay if you don't want to kiddo, we didn't mean to upset you! We just thought-" Patton was cut off when the sobbing boy launched into his arms. Patton immediately held the boy close, holding him tightly to his chest. "Thank you, thank you, thank you," Remus repeated continuously through his tears. After another minute or so, Remus pulled back and wiped his eyes quickly. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cry," Remus said softly. "Hey, it's okay to cry bud! Heck, I cry all the time,"
Patton said. Logan nodded quickly, causing Remus to chuckle lightly. A slight silence fell over the three before Remus spoke up. "I really appreciate this, but are you sure you want me? I have a lot of problems. More trouble than I'm worth," Remus said, refusing to meet the pair's eyes. "Who told you that?" Logan asked softly. Remus chuckled darkly. "My father, my mother, my teachers, basically every adult I've ever had in my life." "Well, we are indeed sure that we want to adopt you. We find you very charming and would love to have you in our family," Logan said. Remus took a breath, processing Logan's words. They really wanted him. For now. Remus pushed those thoughts aside, standing and walking over to the taller man. He leaned down and hugged him. "Thank you so much," he whispered. Logan was slightly taken aback by the contact, but soon held the boy lightly in his arms. "It is no problem at all, Remus." The boy pulled back and walked back to his original seat, unable to wipe the slight smile off of his face. "Well, kiddo, Logan and I need to go talk to Jennifer so that we can finalize this! Would you like to come with us?" Remus nodded, standing and following the two men.
Upon reaching Jennifer's office, Remus was practically bouncing in excitement. He was really going to leave this place. Only for a couple of weeks until they realize how awful you are and send you back. Remus forced these thoughts out. Nothing could ruin his current mood. Patton reached up and knocked lightly on the door, hearing a faint "Come in!" Opening the door, Patton stepped into the room, Logan following. Remus was the last to enter, causing Jennifer to raise an eyebrow. "How can I help you, gentlemen?" Patton and Logan shared a grin. "We have made a decision," Logan stated. "Oh? Who have you chosen?" Jennifer asked, oblivious to the quite obvious answer. "We want to adopt Remus," Patton said with an excited smile. "Remus? Remus Prince? You want him?" Jennifer asked. Both Logan and Patton furrowed their eyebrows. "Yes, is there a problem?" Logan asked with a hint of anger. "Oh, I'm just surprised he could behave long enough to talk with you," Jennifer said with teasing smile toward Remus. The couple felt the anger start to build inside of them until they heard the young boy giggle. "Thanks for the vote of confidence, Jen. Glad to see you have that much confidence in me," Remus said with a slight smile. They were always teasing each other. That's how they worked. "I'm only kidding. Remus is a really good kid, and I'm very happy to see such a nice family interested in him," Jennifer said, smiling at Remus. Both men felt their anger dissipate immediately and replaced it with happiness. At least Remus had someone who cared about him. "Now, I know you're not going to like this Remus, but we need to discuss certain details about Remus and his conditions." Remus groaned, feeling the fear rise in him. They weren't going to want him after hearing everything wrong with him. Patton reached out and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Don't worry, bud. Nothing is gonna change that we want you in our family. We just need to know about your problems so we can help you with them. Okay?" Remus nodded, taking a deep breath. Maybe they were different.
"Would you like to tell them or would you like me to?" Jennifer asked with a soft voice. "You, please," Remus said lowly. Jennifer took a deep breath. "Very well. Remus has had a rather difficult past. That is his choice whether or not he wants to share what happened. However, I am obligated to share the conditions that he suffers from due to these events. He has PTSD. This can cause PTSD episodes, usually through panic attacks or night terrors. When these occur, special precautions must be taken, as he can become rather self destructive. Additionally, he suffers from intrusive thoughts, which can also trigger panic attacks." The couple nodded, taking in the information. What had happened to this poor boy? Remus shift uncomfortably in his seat, waiting for their reaction. "Thank you for informing us. We will research this conditions so that we can better assist Remus," Logan said, breaking the silence. Remus' eyes widened. They cared enough to do that? A small smile spread across his face. "May I also inquire about Remus' schooling situation?" Logan asked. "Yes, of course. Remus is currently homeschooled due to his experience in middle school. His teachers would complain about him being disruptive when in actuality, he would be having a panic attack during class. They refused to be understanding about his conditions, so I pulled him out and educated him myself." The couple nodded sadly. He wasn't misbehaved at all, just misunderstood. "I work at the local high school. Do you think it would be alright if I enrolled him there? I would be able to keep an eye on him and assist when needed. I am also friends with most of the staff, and I believe that they would be rather accommodating," Logan stated. Jennifer smiled. "Yes, I believe that would work great!"
"So, what steps need to be taken next?" Patton asked. "We have some paperwork that must be filled out and processed, then you can take him home! It should take about a week until everything is completed." The couple nodded, grinning. They finally were going to have a child together. "Remus, dear, would you mind stepping out for a moment? I would like to discuss potential triggers, and I wouldn't want to upset you," Jennifer asked softly. Remus nodded and left the room quickly. He didn't want to get upset either, especially in front of his soon to be guardians. "So, Remus has some very specific triggers that should be avoided at all time if possible. First, physical violence. I know that neither of you would hit him, but you must watch out for movies and television shows that display violence. Second, yelling. Please be very wary about yelling at Remus. He can be a bit of a handful, but a stern voice is much more effective on the boy when it comes to disciplining. Finally, he cannot be left in small places or locked in any rooms. I can't explain this one just yet, but he has immense claustrophobia. Those are his main triggers," Jennifer finished, a slightly pained look on her face. "We'll do everything we can to avoid those and make sure Remus is safe," Patton softly said. Jennifer smiled. "I know you will."
