Homo Sapien Sapien

The debate between evolution versus creationism has been a heated one ever since Charles Darwin first published On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection in 1859 and The Descent of Man in 1871. Immediately, the church rebuked it as nonsense. Several states even banned the teaching of evolution in schools. The United States was highly religious during the first couple of centuries following its founding. Folks tended to believe in one supreme higher power who created all things living and rejected theories such as "The Big Bang" and the evolution of man.

However, science shows us proof that evolution is a real occurrence. One common example is wisdom teeth. Our ancestors required the extra four molars at the back of the jaw to help break down tough meat. Now that technologies have brought us a more tender option, we no longer require them. The human race is slowly evolving to no longer produce them; there are people born without them all the time.

There's also the whole lactose intolerance thing. Early Western civilizations had a largely dairy-based diet. So why are there people being born now, centuries later, that lack the enzyme needed to digest cow's milk? Could it be because, in this century, late-stage capitalism has forced our hand at offering several plant-based alternatives? Maybe.

So my question is this: Why can't both be true?

Why can't God have created us and then allowed us to evolve? It only makes sense that we grow and change over time along with the world around us. The thing that stays the same is the thing that time forgets.

The fault of sapiens, though, is our stubborn desire to explain everything in the universe. We are not as high and mighty as we think we are. We are no longer at the top of the food chain. It's possible that we never were.

I am not a religious person, but I now know things that not even science can explain. And that makes me turn to faith that someone, somewhere up there, can.

Because if not,

then we are all doomed.
