Not tame, befriend
Maddey. Did i already show you Maddie? I feel like I did but I kinda checked.
"Aauuuuuuugggh." Melissa threw an arm over her face.
Chelsea huffed and looked at the girl laying on hay boredly. "I told you, you should go and do something else. You don't have to stay here."
Melissa shook her head. "Forget about it. I'm not leaving you with that beast."
"And stop calling him that!" Chelsea crossed her arms. She looked back through the bars. "Don't listen to her, Blackjack. You're no beast. You're beautiful."
Blackjack ruffled his wings in annoyance. What is it with all these cages? Why wouldn't they let him go? He needed to go back to his master! He needed OUT!
Chelsea started in surprise when the alicorn suddenly went crazy and banged against the wall. It neighed and stretched its wings as if trying to fly out.
"Calm down, Blackie! Calm down!!"
The horse was either deaf or ignored her as he trotted in circles, panicked.
Chelsea scowled. "He's getting claustrophobic! We need to let him out."
Melissa snorted and lifted her arm. "Horses don't get claustrophobic."
"Yeah they do."
"And you better not even think about letting that thing out again. He'll just fly away and destroy everything in his path."
Chelsea pursed her lips. She glanced at Blackjack, who's trot had diminished to a walk. He shook his mane.
The brown haired girl leaned over the waist tall wood that covered the bars. She sighed. How was she going to do this. Tame the untameable.
She dug through the backpack she had gotten from Mr. Fenton and brought out some sugar cubes. Perfect! All horses loved sugar cubes.
She reached out her hand to the horse. "Hey Blackjack. Come here boy. Look what I have. Some delicioussss sugar cuuuuubes."
Melissa looked on warily. "His name is Nightmare, I heard. He's not going to come when you call him Blackjack."
Melissa frowned at the redhead. "I am not calling him the name that stupid tin can gave him. He deserves much more."
As she looked at Melissa, Chelsea didn't notice the alicorn approach her. She heard a shuffle and looked back with a gasp.
There he stood. She felt like she could stand on her tipy toes, reach out and touch him.
She stood frozen as he looked at her. He sniffed the cubes on her still stretched out hand and looked back at her.
He grunted and turned, leaving a crestfallen Chelsea.
"Awww. He almost ate them. What kind of horse doesn't like sugar cubes."
Melissa watched wide eyed. "Why aren't you happy!! That's the most you've gotten out of him in all the time we've been here!!! He was so close."
The other hung her arm. "Yeah but what if it's all I get outa him."
Melissa huffed. "Be happy he didn't blast your arm off. I think you're growing on him."
Chelsea immediately brightened up. "REALLY?!"
Melissa hummed and lay back down. She slung the arm back over her eyes. "Now be careful not to destroy what you just build up."
Chelsea grinned and retracted her arm. Her eyes wandered to the door. Dora had locked it and given them the key...
Melissa was not looking. Blackjack was on the other side of the stable.
Chelsea swiftly slipped the key in and opened it. It creaked. She flinched but Melissa didn't move.
She slipped inside and stared at the alicorn.
He was looking at her. The armor still strapped on him glistened slightly.
Her breath came in quickly. She forced herself to calm down.
If she was tense, the animal was tense. She had to show she was no threat.
Blackjack didn't make a sound. His ear twitched as he studied her. She didn't look like a threat. Unlike all the other beings that came in.
Chelsea stood straight and slowly lifted her palm. He snorted and she stopped. She smiled. "Hey- hey big guy. My name's Chelsea." She paused. "Is- is it ok if I call you Blackjack?"
The alicorn didn't move.
Chelsea continued, waving her hand a bit. "I mean. I know he called you something else. But we have to leave the past behind. What better way to do that than get yourself a new name right?" She chuckled.
The horse blinked once and shook his mane. Chelsea took it as approval. She grinned. "So I know I was the one that gave it to you but it fits." She took a few steps forward. Very nonchalant about it. "Maybe you should take the armor off. It's probably very heavy." She frowned at the metal covering almost all his body.
Blackjack watched warily as she walked a bit closer. He was confused. This being didn't seem very interested in him. She was just talking. She wasn't angry at him, or afraid.
Chelsea grinned and dug something from the backpack that had been strapped on her shoulder. "Do you like any treats. Maybe not the sugar cubes but every horse gotta have a weakness. Whether it has wings or not." She grabbed something.
She frowned, uncertain. Then shrugged. "Worth a try. Hey Blackjack. Do you like donuts?"
The alicorn eyed the donuts and sniffed. He slowly took a few steps forward and reached out.
Chelsea watched in amazement as he bit into one. She quickly retracted her hand so he wouldn't bite it off and grinned crazily. "Hey Melissa! You'll never guess! He likes donuts!!"
Her eyes widened when she realized her mistake. Melissa's gasp was followed by and angry shout. "Chelsea?! If you're in there I swear..."
Blackjack flinched at all the shouting. He grunted and forgot all about the tasty snack he'd just swallowed.
Suddenly the door was yanked open and Melissa's silhouette was seen in the opening.
Chelsea ignored Blackjack's shuffling and smiled nervously at her friend. "Heh. Actually funny story. You see there was a squirrel..."
Melissa's eyes widened. "Chelsea! Get out of there!"
Chelsea looked back to see the alicorn trotting towards the opening at full speed. Her standing in the way.
She acted on instinct, only thinking of avoiding those trampling hooves, and jumped. Her arms wrapped tightly around the alicorn's neck as they barraged through the opening.
Melissa barely jumped out of the way and watched helpless as her friend flew away, screaming.
Chelsea clung to the horse's neck for dear life. Don't look down. Don't look down.
Of course, being the curious and rebellious girl she was, she looked down.
They were. So. High. Up.
She paled and hugged the horse tighter. Blackjack didn't respond well to that.
He was free! He didn't want any hitchhikers. He shook his body and made a sharp turn.
Chelsea slipped but was just able to grab on to his wing.
The weight dragged it down and Blackjack neighed as they started propelling down.
This shouldn't be happening, was Chelsea's only thought. Why are we falling- and OH MY GOODNESS WE'RE GONNA DIE.
Pumped by sheer adrenaline she clambered up the wing and on the alicorn's back. With the weight gone Blackjack flapped his wings frantically.
Chelsea grit her teeth. They had too much momentum. Lose weight. We have to lose weight.
Her eyes caught on something. She nodded and pulled at a piece of Blackjack's armor. The horse neighed but she ignored it and yanked it off. She threw it away an proceeded to yank all metal off.
Finally, they stopped falling.
Blackjack gave one push of his wings and hovered in the air. He huffed and snorted.
Chelsea wasn't halfway done yet. She kept relieving the alicorn of his armor.
The skin under it was lightly colorless. As if it hadn't seen fresh 'air' (or ectoplasm) in years.
Blackjack shivered when the air made direct contact with his skin. It felt, oddly nice. He turned his head to see the girl working on his neck plates. He grunted when she took another off and decided to land.
They descended on a rock. The alicorn huffed at the human but she didn't move. So he bucked.
She flew in the air and yelped when she crashed on the rock. Not exactly a soft landing.
Chelsea groaned and pushed herself up. She looked back up at the sound of flapping and saw Blackjack making a break for it.
She gasped and jumped him. While holding on to him tightly she growled: "Nu-uh mister. You are not leaving me here all alone and lost. Especially after you ate my donut."
Lol you guys wanted this...
The alicorn neighed and bucked but she was prepared now and held on tighter.
Finally he stopped and huffed at her. She grinned. "No getting rid of me, Blackjack. I'm gonna stick to you like gum. Not that you know what gum is...I mean...you're a horse," she mumbled.
The stead shook his flaming mane and growled.
Chelsea narrowed her eyes up at him. "You know your teeth have a bit of donut stuck. Actually they're very dirty. Actually they're so sharp. Horses aren't supposed to have sharp teeth what would you even do with-"
She was cut off when he seemed to grin down at her and growled. Chelsea gulped and chuckled. "Alright I get it. No need to get all creepy there."
She grunted as she tried to get a better grip. Then she felt something push against her backpack that had somehow still clung to her during their mad flight. She frowned in confusion and tried to look back when she was lifted.
He was lifting her with her backpack. She let go in surprise and plopped down.
Blackjack kept trying to eat it so she yanked it back. "Hey- no! No eating my backpack. No. No eating any of my things!" He growled at her. "And especially no eating me!"
He sniffed and she blinked. She dug something out. His ears perked up. "Ooooh. So mister I'm-a-dark-and-dangerous-monster wants another donut?" She grinned and tossed it at him.
His teeth snatched it from the air and enclosed it at once. He looked at her expectantly.
She raised her eyebrows. "More? Alright I got one more. But you'll have to come and get it."
She held it out and he hesitated. Slowly he took a step forward as she encouraged him. He reached out and opened his mouth.
His bad breath made Chelsea gag but she held still. Only her other hand moved as she brought it to his face.
His ear twitched slightly so she knew he noticed it but he focused on the donut.
She smiled and grabbed the last of his armor. The helmet. She touched it.
Then she jerked when something sharp bit into her fingers. The alicorn had taken a bite of the donut, almost snapping half her hand off with it. She winced at the bleeding wound and her eyes watered.
Chelsea blinked the tears away and looked up.
Blackjack shuffled. He gulped the food down and looked back at the human. The girl didn't move as she gaped.
The helmet had flown off when she jerked.
Now, Chelsea could see his true beauty. She smiled, completely forgetting about her wound, and scrambled up. "Oh Blackjack." She held out a hand and brought it close to his head.
He flinched but didn't resist as she dragged her hand through his mane. It felt ticklish. She giggled.
Blackjack snorted. He was starting to like this human. He shuffled around, feeling light and exposed. He didn't remember the last time he'd taken the armor off. He felt oddly...freed.
He looked at the helmet. The last thing binding him to his former master. He snorted. Emphasis on former. He had been abandoned by the one he'd been so loyal to.
No more.
This human stood here, smiling. Petting him. Complimenting him.
He loved it.
She'd given him a new name.
A new start.
He nuzzled her. The first show of affection he'd ever given anyone.
Chelsea laughed and stroked his back. "Let's go back. They need us."
